    Via Columbian-
     Inanimate objects fear Wesley Matthews.

They are defenseless against his rage.

One of his early victims, a locker-room door he punched as a freshman at James Madison Memorial High in Madison, Wis., is still traumatized.

Matthews was playing on the sophomore team at the time and grew infuriated with his performance, completely dismissing his team’s 20-point halftime lead. So he stormed into the locker room, decked the unsuspecting door and broke a bone in his hand.

    It didn’t change him.

As a $34 million guard with the Trail Blazers, Matthews still engineers acts of brutality on all things lifeless.

There was the wall he beaned with a basketball three weeks ago at Portland’s practice facility; the 24-year-old irate after two consecutive misses during a shooting drill. There was the padding beneath the basket he slugged at the same venue a few weeks prior; Matthews fuming after failing to score on teammate Luke Babbitt in a one-on-one drill.

I think it's safe to say that Wesley hates to lose. Really, really, really, hates to lose. At anything! I think not just his skill set on the court, but his mental approach to the game has been one of the main reason we are still floating above .500 this season despite our tough schedule and unfortunate injury setbacks. The good news? He's still only turning 25 this year, so there is still more room for him to grow.

I've been an outspoken supporter of Matthews on these boards from the day we signed him, even making a comparison at one point to Kersey.  His drive has been infectious.  The Blazers have been consistently winning the Hustle Board, game in and game out...a big reason for their recent success.  Wesley is a true leader by example, and a player that never "takes a play off".  I doubt there are many left now who would still question the size of his contract.  High character guy without a history of injury, and, as D said...only 25.

    Great find D!  Nice post.

My favorite Blazers have always been the ones who work at it the hardest, maximizing their skills. Lloyd Neal and Joel Przybilla are two that come to mind. I immediately liked Wesley when I saw him in a Blazer uniform. We've seen many sons of NBA stars that struggled to play like their fathers. Wesley (as is Kobe) appears to be the opposite. I hope Matthews is able to continue to improve his game, and not reach his ceiling for years to come.

Portland got lucky to pick him up with Roy going down. It makes me wonder how much they knew about Roy prior to the season.

Well said BDwag, "Wesley is a true leader by example, and a player that never "takes a play off"."

Wes is wise beyond his years and I sometimes forget that he is only in his second year he could play in the Rook-Soph game but i doubt it because he doesn't play like one. He just give us that perimeter toughness that we didn't have in the past and it rub off on everyone else so it safe to say he earning every penny of the money we gave him and I hope he just stays healthy for us.

I wouldn't want it any other way. I don't think I've ever heard of an athlete who just loves to lose. To quote Herm Edwards, "Hello! You play to win the game!
