    via Oregon Live-
Of  the seven players on the Blazers' current roster who were drafted in the first round by Portland from 2006-2010, five were rated as high risk from a medical standpoint, including one who was essentially given a red flag as dangerous to draft. Because of laws protecting the privacy of players, the team would not disclose those players' names.

Steve Patterson, who served as Blazers president from June of 2003 through March of 2007 as well as handling general manager duties from 2006-2007, said the Blazers' medical staff was consistently spot-on in their evaluations. He called Blazers doctors Don Roberts and Tom Reis "among the best doctors in the NBA."

"They had an unique talent to look at a player – particularly Dr. Roberts when it applied to knees – and with great precision predict what would happen to that player in the future," Patterson said.

Patterson said the recommendations of Roberts and Reis were not always followed.

"There were points in time when there were others within the organization who weighed in on decisions who didn't have the same perspective as the doctors," Patterson said. "And those decisions came back to haunt the organization."

Patterson would not elaborate on which decisions he was referring to, but he said Allen was aware of the medical ratings issued to Roy before the 2006 draft, and to Oden before the 2007 draft.

Very interesting read. If anything, it should take away some of the undeserved criticism the medical staff has received over the past couple of years. But just like anything else in life, you win some and you lose some. After being considered frail and soft coming out of Texas, LA has been arguably our most dependable and durable player. On the other hand, Roy's knees never got back to 100% after those pre-NBA surgeries. But you can't let injury history completely dictate how you'll draft. I mean, look at Dejaun Blair. He has NO ACL's, yet he's not missing a beat in San Antonio. Sometimes it's just how the cookie crumbles...

Injuries happen.  Anyone that blames the players, staff, coaches, GMs, or anyone besides the fact injuries happen are just frustrated.  I really hope they don't take it personal, because I really doubt they'd get fired for negative reaction from frustrated fans.

Every so often Quick writes something worth reading.....this may very well qualify. I honestly wonder how he keeps his "insider" status with the team though when he seems hell-bent on being very critical of the team and the organization in general (at least, imo). I really hope the crazy people who keep blaming the medical staff read this and take it into consideration...meh, who am I kidding?

When are the Blazers paperwork people upstairs gonna realize that yes, they've made some mistakes?

When our team starts forfeiting games, because we're so short-handed, then management maybe, just maybe, might actually start hiring Blazers to play for the injured and traded ones? ? ?

This is exactly what I thought. It is mostly BAD luck. Actually terrible luck. But honestly, how much better would we be if we drafted any one else in the 2006 draft? Would we be a contender or way better with Bargnani or Farmar or Morrison or Rondo? I don't think so. Rajon is good because he is surrounded by hall of famers, but no one else comes even close to Brandon. And Greg? His knees looked great! We would be better off the last couple years with Durant, obviously, but it is still bad luck with Greg as well. It is a gamble. With our luck if we had drafted Durant he probably would have injury issues!!!

But mostly I think it is kinda cruel the way fans are treating Brandon right now. He ruined his knees for us, rookie of the year, 3 time all star, lead us back to the playoffs and now everyone wants to trade him without thinking twice about letting him try to come back from this. I think we owe it to him to at least try to do all he and the organization can to get better. Instead people think Wes Matthews is a great replacement or an upgrade?? That is ridiculous. I love Matthews aggressiveness and defense and all, but he is no Brandon Roy. Do you think Kobe would ever say "Wes Matthews is the toughest to guard because he has no weakness."? Or would Ron Artest say "Wes Matthews is the best I've ever played against."?

With all due respect to Wes... I don't think so.

I hate how much everyone is so loyal to Brandon Roy. I have been a Blazer fan all my life and I love the organization, but it's about winning. Can we honestly say that we would win a championship with Roy when all it ends up being is the Roy show? He's a good player but whenever he has the ball, our game becomes so one dimensional. Then once things get hard for him with his injury and can't rely on his speed, he starts to throw people under the bus. Wesley Matthews is a team player, and is only in his second season. He might not be Roy on the offensive side, but flow wise he is better.

I'm really excited for this draft class. It's very deep at the point guard and small forward positions.

Didn't we just draft 2 rookies at those positions?
And didn't we sell out 2 Blazers to get those guys on the court?

    huh?

    what?

The bottom line for me is Brandon Roy is a true franchise player, no one else except maybe Lamarcus (and only very recently) comes close. It is so rare to have a player who can take over a game on a regular basis, when the opposition knows who's going to have the ball when it matters the most, and yet still deliver. If there is a chance of getting him back to even 80% it will be huge. Andre can take over games at times, and so can Lamarcus and Wes, but Brandon is special and he did it on a consistent basis, and it really seems like everyone forgot already. I even hear people saying Roy was not a team player! I remember the majority of times wishing he would take over sooner!! He was always trying to get his teammates involved first! Also I have seen Brandon play pretty amazing defense at times, though he hasn't been doing that the last year as much, especially this year when playing through injury.

I just don't think it is wise to give up on him already.

Like Tom has been saying, we owe it to Brandon for him to try and come back. If he can't then well we go from there. But really what choice does management have? He's signed for 5 years with a 80+ mil contract.

Nah, Washington would just sign him themselves, save them a pick. Also, no way JJ is worth a lottery pick. Oladipo would be great, for pretty much any team in the NBA. I don''t think it''s possible to get him though. Should focus on getting a defe...

What happens if we don''t win? Dwight will start his nonsense, we would be out a lot of money, and with no real talent to show for it. San Antonio and Memphis is proof that you don''t need superstars to win.
