sorry for the ignorance but have been off line for a month. Im cheering that Patty has more minutes but why the sudden change? Patty is the superior player in Basketball IQ and speed so why did the golden boy AJ get dropped to water boy
I am a fan of Patty Mills. Cant wait to see him get some PT

He's a talented guy, and has had some good minutes.

he's a rookie who makes rookie mistakes. Ditto Luke Babbitt.

Patty's paid his dues and, when asked to step up in response to injuries, he's done well. His energy and enthusiasm have been arguably as important as his skills.

Seems raw talent isn't enough, everybody's got to earn their minutes.

it is called he is a rookie and patty has more basketball experience and i agree with occassia he has paid his dues.  aj will get his time but he will get better. he is talented for sure.  i say be prepared practice etc and keep a good attitude when your time comes you play...be prepared....and ready for you never know when your time will come.

My take on it is this. AJ had a nice pre-season and showed alot of promise. He also use to stay within the offensive scheme of things (running the plays as they are designed) and now he doesn't do that anymore. When AJ gets into the game he has got up almost 3 shots within his first minute or two and he has the same problem that Bayless use to have which is driving into the timber with no place to go and we all know that leads to turnovers and bad decisions. Patty on the other hand does exactly what we need of him when he comes into a game. He run's the plays, is unselfish with the ball and takes good shots for the most part. AJ is a very talented player and has a bright future, but he is going to have to earn it by being a team player and doing the little things that the team asks from him right now.

    peace out,

I  agree with the comments in this thread. Armon will now be going through what Patty had to deal with when he only got junk time and little minutes at the end of blown out games; its tough to show what you are capable of doing and getting into a rhythm in that situation.   Armon is going to just have to hang in there and do what's asked of him and he will get his chance. Patty only started getting meaningful game time when the Blazers or Nate was performing poorly and looking at Patty was an option that was not really canvassed till then, plus with Andre's 1 game suspension also helped Patty. Since then Patty has been solid in limiting his turnovers and doing what is asked off him.

We also know that the NBA is a business and no one player is safe from being traded, save for LA in his current form; on this forum I think most people have offered up trading different combination's of the current roster, from Dre to Roy and even Batum who was an untouchable at the start of the season. My point is that Armon needs to have the mindset that if he keeps showing his potential at practice, then when his chance comes then he has to grab it.  Look at Patty, at the start of  his NBA career he was fourth in line at the PG position and a rookie that Nate probably didn't want on his team.  Patty wasn't even officially on the team through summer league and it looked like he would be cut.  Once he did get resigned he was still behind Dre and Bayless and even Armon was placed before him and the team probably needed a big man more than a fourth point guard (Kim fist pumping the air on that last point). We all know the rest, Bayless traded and Armon made some errors, putting Patty in the backup spot.  Just needs to keep doing the work and something will come his way...

Needed a big man more than a 4th pg, sure did get a fist pump Kingfisher.
The easy answer to the question, AJ is a rookie, Nate is the coach ......

The longer answer, I don't see how Patty is a superior player to AJ. They would have to be given equal time playing with the team to judge that, imo. AJ is a rookie.
AJ has now taken his seat in the pg musical chairs that is Nates pg system.
My take on Nates system for pgs as demostrated the last 4 years:
Jack,Chacho,Bayless (one of the most important reasons I'm not sold on Mills as pgotf, other than his size, I do like his fiesty though, and he does deserve a roster spot to match up with the other minis )

sit as a rookie ( I think Patty  actually sat 2 years )
play the next year over a better player (Jack over Blake, Chacho over Bayless )Blake haters remember the Lakers grabbed him for a reason.
    traded the 3rd year( Jack,Chacho,Bayless )
Then throw in  Green who just sat, and Blake who was sacrificed for Camby, since as Kingfisher stated above, a 4th pg was more important than another big. ( even with Odens injury history huge sigh )
And the amount of time Roy "needs the ball in his hands "  = pg musical chairs.

Whether a player sits a week, a month, or a year, as a rookie, they still have to take their lumps and learn on the court against other teams.
Nate knows more than fans do, and the team is playing well now, but imo, sitting them just because they are rookies isnt helping the team in the long run, and it sure didnt  help the above mentioned players who are no longer Blazers.
Nate, please let go of GP starting over you as a rookie, it's water under the bridge now  :)

    Bring on the Mavs !!

    Go Blazers !!!!

Simply put.. Patty had one oppurtunity and he grabbed it. Since then he has been more effective than Armon. I know you think Armon has more potential.. but we are living in the now. Armon made too many turnovers.. Patty got a little go and has earned his playing time since. Armon is young.. if he is really is a good player he will make it no matter what.

AJ hit the rookie wall and defenses figured out how to scout him. Until Armon learns how to make the proper reads when attacking the hoop, defenses will continue to sag in and bait him into a tough runner, much like we saw with Bayless in his rookie year.

When opportunity knocked for Patty, he opened the door and has kept the backup job since. Even when AJ got a little extra pt during back-to-backs, he really wasn't able to take advantage. It's too bad though, since I was really high on him coming off of his Summer League performance. But credit Patty as well, his court vision has been better than advertised during his backup pg stint.

Yes, Patty has taken advantage of his opportunity.
So just curious,  how much did Bayless play his rookie season ?  And how did the benching as a rookie help his carrier, and the Blazers so far ??

Like i said if Bayless is really a good player he will deliver no matter what. Michael Jordan was cut on his high school team.. which means he didnt get to play at all that year. Did that hinder his development? No it made him more determined to improve. Steve nash only started 2 games in his rookie season, averaged 3 pts per game. Now hes a 2 time mvp. And finally Patty, he didnt play at all in his rookie season.. and hes doing fine now.

Bayless now playing regularly at Toronto is in the ideal situation. The fact he isnt doing all that much better is all on him.

Chacho isn't even in the NBA, Green is in no mans land, Jack plays bench behind CP3 and Bayless is really pushing Calderon for that starting spot.

Exactly.  None of them are still here is the point. But lets keep using the same rookie pg plan and expect a different outcome :)
