This is not a bash Roy thread, just simply an observation I've noticed lately. And here are my reasons:

1- LA plays at his highest when he knows he has to. I feel like sometimes when he knows Brandon is on the floor or another player is having a great night that the team doesn't need him to win and he kind of coasts mentally. Without Roy, he's been on a tear as of late and I think a lot of it has to do with the pressure of being "the man" on a night in and night out basis and he's relishing it.

2- LA excels in the open court. End line to end line, he's the quickest forward/center in the league. His long body was tailor made to run the floor. Without an injured Roy, who can't move as well as he used to, the team is pushing the tempo, resulting in easier baskets for LA and getting him into his rhythm early.

I think if we had a healthy Roy, we're not having this conversation, but if Roy is not at a level worthy of playable, we should sit him, because the everyone on the team is best at fast breaking and the offense is clicking right now. With that said, I still like Brandon and wish him the best in his recovery, but until then, I think he hinders more than helps the team at the moment, LA is just one example of this.

i think the small lineups are working (for now) for the blazers. I don't get to watch too many games where i'm from, but i imagine that the floor is much more spaced out now, which makes it really tough on defenses. They have to cover a lot of ground.

I think Roy has been such a huge problem this year. When he's on defense, opposing teams take advantage of him, knowing that he's even slower than usual. On top of that, his defensive IQ is low to begin with. On offense, obviously he's just not the same. No explosion. The worst part of him in our offensive lineup, is that the rest of the team "defers" to him. They feel obligated to give him his touches. And they do. But when he gets the ball he's just standing there. He's not receiving off of a hard cut. His penetration is less threatening bc teams know he's probably just going to pass it off. It's like playing 4 vs 5 out there when he plays. We've all witnessed a stagnant blazer offense this year. Roy blames it on Dre. But i think it's been Roy all along. Rudy is a stud. That guy knows how to run a pick and roll.

I think the team has seen an ugly side to brandon and they are rallying together and moving on without him. I say build this team around LMA. Upgrades or changes are okay, but don't blow it up bc there are very good pieces here already.

I agree that Lamarcus is geared more towards a fast pace but honestly, this year I think we would be talking about this even if Roy was healthy. Lamarcus is doing two BIG things differently this year, and it seems to be recently paying dividends. One, is he is actually going towards the hoop and being more aggressive not settling for jump shots EVERYTIME like previous years and he's getting to the line. Two, he is going after rebounds more, especially offensively. I think these two things are finally settling in as being second nature and it is making the rest of his game that much better.

I also agree that Roy's injury has been a huge problem this year, but if Roy was healthy and Aldridge was playing like this... we would be challenging the Spurs for the best record, especially if Roy was ok sharing the rock with Dre. Roy and Dre are similar but when they work together it is a dynamic backcourt and I like Roy doing his thing and taking turns with Dre operating and finding guys like Lamarcus.

I don't think it's that Aldridge plays better, it's that the bench players play better when they get the minutes.  We could limit Roy to 20 minutes, have him score 10 or so points, and play our sparks off the bench more (making them be sparks off the bench).  When the players around Aldridge play better, he plays better.  Energy is contagious, and players like Rudy, Mathews, and Batum give Aldridge a lot of energy, and make life a lot easier when they make their shots by spreading the floor and freeing him up.

LMA isn't really playing any better, he's just having an easier time and taking complete advantage of it.

The offensive philosophy has changed, it is a faster tempo and attack the rim type of scheme. It works with this team because we are long and athletic. This Philosophy should have been instituted a long time ago, given the players we have and had.
Roy and L.A. can do this together (and be great), if NATE allows them and Roy is coached to run more.
I just hope when Roy comes back we don't slow it down to much (Your tempo obviously depends on the team you are playing).

LA has even said that he likes the up tempo offense and we have seen why. With guys like Mills, Matthews, LA, and Dre you can successfully run that up tempo offense; it has been proven over the last 3 games. I wish Brandon the best in his recovery as well, but I have to agree with Clydefrog and say that he probably will hinder the tempo of this team when he is healthy. I feel bad even saying that, but BRoy is known for slowing a game down and going one on one when he is healthy, so! It has been an exciting team to watch over the past month with Brandon in and out of the lineup, seeing players like Matthews and Rudy come to life have been very exciting to watch. I think over the next 4 games we will see if this kind of intensity and energy keep up, and if so we can continue having this "conversation", if not we will be back at square one. I really don't see that happening though! This team without a Brandon Roy is starting to gel and get comfortable with their roles, most importantly it seems like a really good team!

I completely agree with the statement that Aldridge plays better without Roy.  LA's confidence seems to have shot through the roof the past few games, however the past few games have been against sub-par teams.  I'm anxious to see how he plays (in his new role as the dominate offensive player) against a Utah or a Denver.

He does play better when the chips are down that's for sure-
“I’ve always been confident, but lately we’re so depleted that I feel like I have to be confident or we’re not going to win,” added Aldridge, who played 44 minutes despite the scoring disparity. “So I have to be a little bit overly confident in my play and my teammates play.” COLUMBIAN
“This is the best I’ve played as far as points in the paint, going for the basket, getting to the free throw line – all those things are pretty high right now,” Aldridge said. “This is the best I’ve played.” PORTLAND TRIBUNE
I love the fact that Wesley isn't going to let him take a day off either-
“Now I have standards for him,” Matthews said with a laugh. “He’s going to get an earful from me if I see anything less than this. This is regular to me.”

The only reason LA doesnt put up these numbers with roy is because we dont run.  Until Roy gets to 100% LA should be our number 1 option and let roy be 2.  Amare has sucess because he has been on teams that run

Is it because they are using Aldridge more offensivly?
Are they running the offense through him ?

i dont know if Roy might have that much to do with him, i mean i can understand the injury and, yes with him off they may have a faster pace. but like is nate waking up and telling them to run?

to me taking the face of the franchise off the court should technically make the 2nd best player ( this year number 1) better?
You would think they should be a tandem, but hey.

I just think that Using aldridge as our go to center, or PF like Malone was or someone like shaq, where he is your option, when creating a play, use him as a piece of the puzzle, a tool to get the job done, or flat out let him go to work on them.
Making him more of a threat, will open the rest of the team.

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
