seriously, i know everyone is saying the lakers are the team to beat, but is the spurs' 20-3 start an indication that maybe they've taken the lakers' place in that regard? also, take into consideration that the spurs usually play the lakers pretty tough and often have good results in their head-to-head meetings.

    i think it's possible, so i figured it's worth a discussion.

They are a championship team, I think we saw that with how much the refs helped them in this game.  Lakers aren't the team to beat.  I don't care if they are the defending champs, anyone that goes 17-8 or whatever with their schedule isn't much of a championship team.

Dallas or SAS will win the top seed, and likely the West.  I just don't see it happening for the Lakers.

i think  you are so right on many fronts...i was surprised at how good san antonio is this year...i say any team who can dethrone the lakers and get it done kudos.  one thing is kobe bryant is getting older and he has had his struggles with injures. i thinnk they can play them tough.  i think the west is good this year.

Spurs are really impressive this year. Their excellent defense against us was what beat us. People can say whatever they want... ie we didn't execute, we didn't do this, we didn't do that... but the Spurs had us at the mercy of their defense. If they can stay healthy and continue to play like this, they have a very good chance of coming out on top in the West this year. Not only that, but I hope they beat the Lakers because I hate the Lakers so much!

wesley gets hit in the head at the end of the half and the refs excuse is "i wasnt watching" ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! this game was one sided officiating the whole time, its obvious the league wants the spurs to be in contention this year, because tim duncan is on his way out. the spurs committed 1 foul in the first quarter and that came at the end of the quarter. i think they had 3 all first half. in the 3rd quarter i noticed that the spurs were up the exact number of free throw attempts more, they had than us. this stat continued until garbage time. in the end the league gave the aging spurs the preferable time of day for old fogies and at home, and the preferable calls all day. but this is nothing new to me, since it is often painful being a portland trailblazer fan, and i am optimistic that if seattle gets a new team that the nw will get more respect than is currently being shown to our small rainy city.

Just a quick response - I know they haven't done great the last two years in the playoffs (first and second round exits) but the fact they have won titles - not to mention 4o f them - you always have to consider them one of the teams to beat. Two years ago, Manu was injured so they had a tough time and they ran into a good Dallas team in the first round. Last year, they were able to pull off the upset (seed-wise) vs. Dallas. In short, any team coached by Pop and with TD in the line-up, you have to consider that during the season and playoffs, they are a team to be reckoned with. Of course, injuries can hit any team at any time, so that is always a factor of course.

This year of course, as we saw last night, they are at the top of their game and off to a great start, but I think since many had written them off in the media, it makes it look so unexpected. I think if you know basketball (and I don't really know the ins and outs too well honestly) you should know that such a team is going to challenge for the title if not get to the Finals, the Spurs should be on the road to the Finals for a team in the west, barring an upset. I think they have earned the right to get that respect, so if you beat them, then hey, all due credit is to that team. Don't know if that makes sense, but basically, this year, yes, once again in an way emphatic, they are again at the top and along with the Lakers (defending champs always get this distinction), are the teams to beat this year.

My 2 cents. Good board topic Ms. K

What do the Spurs and the Celtics do that the Blazers should pay attention to ?

    Veteran leadership
no pg musical chairs for 3 years
dont run their superstars into the ground
keep a stock of big men

I'm not giving the Spurs the west yet, there is still a lot of season left.

Spurs had a soft schedule, but I definitely think that they are as good or better than the Lakers.

Alot of good Great talent on that team whether you like them or not. Tim does not look as old this year like he did last year. But than again the season is still young and time will tell. If not the Blazers than anyone else but the Lakers.

Spurs are definitely playing some good basketball.
They have played a soft schedule to start this season so I would to wait before saying they are the team to beat.
I think when all is said and done LA Lakers will still be on top of the west followed by Dallas.

The West runs through LA until LA loses. Spurs look great now, but how will they hold up over the course of an 82 game season?

That''s because Bosh has a good defensive coach. Also, Bosh is a more effective mid range shooter than LMA, because he only takes good wide open shots. I think if he was the number one option and took as many shots as LMA, or had to set up his own...
