Breaking news: Wesley Matthews will start in place of Nic Batum tomorrow night. More coming soon on
Wow! That's really I can think of at the moment. I'm not sure how it will work out, but I do know that Wesley thrives in the starting role and maybe this is the kick-start that Batum needs? Do you agree with this lineup change?

Batum has been playing borderline lousy the last few games while Matthews is tearing it up!  The better player should be starting and its obviously Matthews right now.  Batum is only 21 and has plenty of time to develop into the player most of us think he will be.  Matthews is bringing a lot more offense which is sorely lacking lately.  I think its the right move...

Batum is not and has never been consistant. It is up one game and down the next. Wes will definatley provide a punch out of the gate which is what we need. He has earned this spot in my opinion. He does need to work on his free throw shooting though if he wants to be a finisher in close games!

    peace out,

I think Wesley should start over Nic and Im a huge Nic lover.  Maybe Nic will be able to bring it off the bench as opposed to starting.  Wesley has earned the starting position in my opinion though, he has been all over the place defensively and offensively.   Either way, SOMETHING needs to happen!!

Imo, changing the starting lineup isnt whats needed.  My question :   Who will step up in the 4th quarter?
With or without Roy in the game.  Someone has to.
Travis can defend the 1 play the Blazers seem to know to close out a game.... Roy and 4. ( Long time members here should find that amusing :) )
I hope the player only meeting did some good......

Can Wes produce while playing with Roy? Will Roy defer to Wes? Shaking it up is good if it yields results.

I'm with Kim, Wes starting doesn't mean he will be there in the 4th. Maybe the benching will light a fire under Batum and he will be more productive with his minutes. We shall see.

It doesn't seem our starting unit needs to be changed (at least for the first 3 quarters) True nic has not been scoring but he is long and poses problems for other teams. I like WM coming off the bench, since someone coming off the bench needs to do some scoring. Nic coming off the bench, I'm not sure about this. I think it might work if the team actually runs plays for him, but if they do why don't they do it in the starting line up with Roy and L.A. I was thinking that he would be a legit 3rd option on the starting unit from his play to start the season.
I'm at a bit of a loss with this team - everything is just kinda weird right now. But I think it is not the best idea to start WM over batum.

Question: why isn't Rudy getting more PT and the freedom to play his game? He was in the dunk contest, has he had a dunk this year? Is Nate chaining him to the 3 point line or is this self imposed? I thought he would be a legit option off the bench, if he got more minutes. If he can't get the minutes play Babbit so we can see what we have in the rookie. Rudy looked so disgruntled at the end of the nets game. I think he could be a scorer in this league if we ran plays for him instead of the just putting him on the 3point line.

I think you nailed it right there.
Honestly i dont see the point in making this change, other than for that reason of "trying anything at the moment."
We signed Wesley to play like a Role Player, to play the way he has been stepping it up over the past few games, i dont think he should be Rewarded by Starting.
HE just did his Job.Now if he can keep it up perhaps a move might be the appropriate move.
As for now, i dont see how replacing the starters is going to fix their problems/lack of offense, how can they work it out if they dont play together?

I remember this sign in my elementary school classroom, it read: "What is popular is not always right and what is right is not always popular" or something along those lines.
I also remember in elementary school, I was the best basketball player, one handed half court shots, amazing.......

This is a big height drop for our #3 pos. I take it Roy will be in at the 2, but as far as it is looking in that game you can expect more 3's.

think the real reason is in the coaching. changing the line up wont matter if we have lousy coaching. i love nate mcmillan but i think he depends way to much on roy. we need a coach who can make everyone a threat not just roy. we need to fire mcmillan or else we will never be able to become the team we want to. i have been a blazer fan from the start and loved them even when they were the jail blazers.

I'm still not seeing how WM starting helps the problem in the 4th quarter ??  But Nate knows best....
It isnt only Nic that has to learn an offense that doesnt revolve around Roy. Whether Roy is on the court or not. Someone (not #7)  has to step up, and score !!

I'm nor sure if it will help bench production; Wes has been the spark off the bench the team needs. With Nic on the bench, there might be a struggle to find the offensive identity the team needs.

wes matthews has earned his starting position by scoring 20+ points every night off the bench. he could be the fourth quarter answer we desperately need right now. nic batum is an incredible defender and decent scorer all over the floor, but his usual spark has been faltering lately. as has been pointed out, he's young and still has many seasons and opportunities to develop into the consistent and clutch player he is certainly capable of becoming. i say let wes start, and we'll see how he flows into the starting offensive and defensive rhythm the blazers have going.

They had to do something...Better to start Wes, and let Nic step back without the pressure and make some adjustments...This should help him build some consistancy without Nate jerking him around with playing time.

I'm not sure how this helps us at all. Just because Wes starts doesn't mean he will get as many touches. With ball-dominant Roy in the game at the same time, Wes won't see the ball as much as if he were coming off the bench. Many people have said, look what he did when he started, but that was without Roy on the floor. I don't thinking bringing Nic off the bench helps, because he isn't the problem in the starting lineup. If we ran, and used our athleticism more, we would be a better team. We aren't a good half court team, and with a slow-down offense, we won't ever win enough. Lastly, draw up some plays for Nic, and you just watch what kind of player he can be...

I like it. Batum really doesn't bring the tenacity that Matthews displays when he gets minutes. Batum plays pretty soft and soft isn't what we need in that starting unit. We've got to set the pace defensively and Batum isn't cutting it. Matthews and Batum do similar things offensively except Matthews is a little bit more explosive. What will be missed from Batum is his help defense ability, but what increases is consistent rebounding from Matthews. Let's see how this pans out.

Roy coming off the bench? Now that's just crazy no offense. That's like saying Matt Barnes should start over Kobe.

I think that is good idea, WM should has a chance to play in starting 5 over Batum after a couple of good matches and for NB maybe it will be better to see start of the game from bench and think what he can improve in his game,  because lately his play was awful

I think that benching Batum will be a wake up call to him, that he needs to step up his game. He is a great player and has loads of potential, I mean the guy turns 22 soon. Not so much necessarily to step up his game but become more consistent, and well who knows what could happen having him on the second line, may even be a better fit.

It's all in the stats, it's all in the stats! Wesley is playing better than Nic right now and deserves his shot on the court as a starter. Wes is also more likely to take an inside shot, off the dribble while penetrating, than Nic is. In a nutshell Wesley is the more mature player and will do more offensively than Nic. Nic is still a great player and he still has all my support, I hope that he is not to upset, if he even is at all.

It's real simple, bench Roy.  Remember the Denver game when he was out and WM and Batum started.  Best game they've had in awhile.

Good move so far. Batum looks like he's lost a lot of his swagger/confidence and Matthews is arguably playing the best basketball of the entire team. 26 points tonight and 7 of our 11 4th quarter points? Ballin'

I think putting Wesley in the starting lineup is brilliant. He's been playing tremendously as of late. Although Batum is struggling, I'd rather he start as well. I'd roll with Miller/Matthews/Batum and just rest Roy. Roy looks like a shell of his former self at the moment and he's only hurting the team right now. When's the last time Roy scored no 4th quarter points?

To answer your question. Never. I don't really think it's his health, he's about at the same explosion from last year. Right now it's just the team in general. For some reason that I can't explain we cannot hit a shot in the 4th.
