I saw this topic on another site and thought I'd pose the question to all of you here. With Greg's health up in the air and Roy's knees acting up again, does that mean that LA is the face of the franchise? Obviously we hope GO can return to form and that Roy's knees won't hinder his career, but LA is rarely hurt (knock on wood) and has played with more of a chip on his shoulder recently, giving fans hope that there's more to come from the L-Train. Maybe more importantly, could Aldridge handle being the #1 option on offense all the time? I've liked what I've seen out of him this year on both ends of the court. He's settling less for the jumper and has been a beast blocking shots. Is it time for LA to put the team on his shoulders for a while?

No i'm sorry Dhawes he can't be right now it's just not the right move.  Listen guys i have a few guesses why but right there is some disruption among fans with this team.  I think people are starting to become disenchanted with our team because it seems like there is no growth in potential.  Now we are a good team, one that can go out and put away the majority of other clubs no sweat but i think fans are seeing now that we are not an elite team.  I think to most people thats what the game against the lakers meant.  after starting great this season it got peoples hopes up about how our team had grown, and that maybe this was the year where we ascended to that high level of basketball.  But the loss against the lakers was heartbreaking and a wakeup call.  The Lakers play their best, they studied and knew how to play.  We came in and played at a low level from the start and when we all looked towards brandon roy to save the team he faltered.  that coupled with Roy's statement about wanting less minutes has made him the perfect scapegoat right now.  We all see him as the reason that we are not at that elite level right?  We should trade him because he promised to bring our team to that level just 2 years ago but now its like his play is declining right?  No its not Roys fault we are here right now and we may see his play as declining but in reality i think we are seeing him try to find a balance that will allow him to play great when he needs it.  I think he made these changes so we could beat teams like LA and so he would not disappoint fans again when we go meet a team on the 5th game of the week.  We have to remember that in this league sometimes overall stats are less important than giving other players key play time to grow and your main guys time to rest, this is especially true when we have so many promising young players who need that time.  Aldridge's growth has been extremly fun to see and makes me think that this is the year he will get a lot more attention but i don't think he is or wants to be the leader.  A lot goes by within those huddles  and i think Roy and others have done a great job being a leader of the team, and truthfully as long as he plays hard and shows others have to behave on and off the court i would not care if he averaged 10pts a game i would still want him as the face and the leader of this franchise.  with that being said i could see Aldridge getting a lot more playing time as the no 1 offensive option and a lot of plays being drawn for him this year.  which i hope will happen because if Aldridge has the ball and is playing hard on the inside, that opens up a lot of options for guys on the outside. and i don't doubt he could be the leading scorer overall this year.  But i will say this now, if you don't believe what i am saying watch roy's play the rest of this year against key contenders in big games.  I think that is where he is looking to make his spot and be the difference for the team.  Its not flashy, its not gonna give him much chance to be known as a big league star but its what brandon can do to help this team learn to play with each other and bring it to the next level by not relying on their stars to carry them.
I am a fan of a team who values integrity and shows great heart.

Well i dont know if youvve noticed, Faces dont just come off when you want a new one.....

So i dont believe a face can be interchangeable in the matter that it is being tossed around like the title of team captain. A face is a veteran, a face is something that is recognized all around, all the time, it doesn't change.
Is LaMarcus Aldridge really the Face of the team? has he been the most dominant player on this team during his stay in Portland? Has he always been loved by more than hated?

Or has he been the "other" starter for the past 4 years? You know, that other big guy, not the injured one, no. And not the one that scores all those points all the time, you know, the other big guy. Aldridge has been more of a "Janitor" for this team. A guy who is always there to clean up when the team is getting sloppy, a guy who can play like an all star, even though he not looked upon as one. A guy who doesnt give it his "all" all the time, we have seen him erupt into a beast, and there are games where he can easily throw up 30 and grab plus 10 boards. You throw in the awareness to pass when double teamed, and passing abilities, you have a total offensive package.

Brandon Roy is the face of this team, and the fact that it is even questionable is rediculous. The portland trailblazers are back on the MAP because of Roy. He was aquiried in a BOGUS trade, and was like an Angel fell on Portlands lap. They put him to good work and in the first 5 years of his playing here he has been a 3 time all star. He is Efficiant, day to day to day to day! He runs his team, he can make the big shot when it comes down to it, because it is his team, his shot. He is a perfect almost IDEAL figure off the court, a gentleman and well respected man amongst the sports community, Brandon Roy is the Hero for Portland, he is the Trailblazers Face.

Can he be the face no but he can be the Enforcer that stands behind the boss.  You see Roy in front and his right hand man LA to his side.  If LA starts to hit clutch buckets at the end of game and knocks down game winners if Roy isnt able to play.  Will he become the face no ESPN will still say Roy and the trailblazers. But he can become our Pau the trusted low post compliment with versatility....

Due respect to LA, I'm not sure he has keys to lead the team like Brandon does. Say what you will about the knee and the mixed messaged pre/post season; Brandon Roy has incredibly sharp court IQ, and he has leadership sense in spades. La Marcus is an incredibly talented player. Roy is the face of the team.

There is only ONE Roy.  The commitment, character, work ethic, leadership and integrity of the man have become undeniable.  Only ONE Roy on this team.  Only ONE Roy in the entire league, and we have been fortunate enough to have him.  Show me another player of his caliber (or better) with his character.

    Rant over.

With regard to LA.  I don't believe Brandon's leadership shoes can be filled with any one player on this team.  Those kicks are just too big.  IMO, the leadership role will now fall on Camby and Miller, the two vets on the team.  We are already seeing this, so really not a revelation on my part.  More of an observation.

Roy will be the face of this franchise until he's the face of another franchise. Zero argument here, but a very good one to bring up.

Roy is the face of the franchise and Armon is the epitome of the Coachs values and spirit on the floor.  I wouldnt be surprised if he was named an honorary captain next year.  Nate loves that kid and all he wants to do is get better hes gonna be a big part of the team in the future.

Good addition BDawg i seen roy single handedly win us games and carry the team on  both sides of the ball and earn his extension without a shadow of a doubt this is roys team playing 40 minutes or 10 minutes this is his team

    1. It's not just his scoring that is up. His double doubles are up, rebounding,

blocks, his entire game is better. In the 70's Walton was the face of the

Blazers, but in the championship year, our recently departed hero Maurice Lucas

led in scoring. Way too much is put on the "Face of the Team." I believe this will be L-Trains break out year.

The last thing we need is Aldridge to feel cocky.... Psychology101, when a person feels they are not getting the respect they deserve, THEY WORK TO EARN IT.

The last thing we need is Aldridge to feel he is carrying the team with his sub-par numbers.

PS- TayC is right, you can't slap a face on a franchise overnight and say "LA IS NOW OUR FRANCHISE PLAYER" lol!!

To be honest, we need a veteran to be our franchise player. Maybe, a cloaked assassin type of person..... A person who has experience... That person is Sean Marks. Not only is Marks expected to have a breakout year, he will steal Camby's minutes and could get league MVP... So why are we even throwing around LA when we should be talking about SM (Sean Marks)?

Tonight would be a nice coming out party for LA on national television. The rest of the media will take notice if he can have another 20 point 15 rebound type game on ESPN. We need to continue to find him down low though as we went away from him after the 1st quarter last Thursday.

I think this whole thread should be changed to
"Is LaMarcus the cutest player on the team?"
Because apparently you have a FAT CRUSH on him.
A face is someone who earns it over the years of being with the team up and down, not because he is scoring double digits points and grabbing double doubles because our other guys are sucking.
I mean look in contrast, look at what message you send to the supposed "other potential face players"
YOure saying, your good but just not good enough, and well, the fans like him more.
Or, and well, he has more points the last 5 games, (players response) "what? 5 games? we have only played like 9? Isnt it a littler early to be making those types of decicions, i mean, wwhy do you have to Label us anyway?"

Oh no, dont think of that, it might snap ya back to reality.........remain in LALA land.

    LA is making his case.
    Last 4 games-
    Dec 15 @DAL 35 points (14-26), 10 rebounds
    Dec 17 MIN 36 points (15-22), 10 rebounds, 5 blocks
    Dec 18 GSW 17 points (6-10), 12 rebounds
    Dec 20 MIL 29 points (12-18), 19 rebounds, 2 blocks

My advice- Keep running and Aldridge's production will continue to stay at this level

I'm not ready to write Roy off just yet, Roy has been doing it for years while Lamarcus has been doing it for a week. I think it is too early to say. Also I'm willing to forgive Roy's recent comments and file them under "frustrated grumblings" because he is facing a very real possibility of not ever being the same player again. We don't know for sure yet so here's hoping he returns to form. Two years ago I remember him talking about wanting to become as good as Kobe or Wade, now he is hoping he can be a starter. That's got to be tough.

But not to take anything away from what Lamarcus is doing, which is very exciting to watch!!! I missed the game tonight and at first I thought it was a misprint when I checked the box score and saw 19 rebounds!!!

Face of the franchise is what has been wrong... need to do whatever it takes to make all the players as good as they can be... I have felt for a long time like LA has deferred to BRoy... part of that is on him and part of it is on the system the team the town...  I think as we see the team play now without Brandon players are starting to see it as their team, not just Brandon's and with that comes a sense of ownership and freedom...Freedom to be the players they are capable of players no longer to defering to another on the court... Brandon has been huge, but i thinkk this is showing that his dominance on our team has held other players back... Blazer fan forever for sure!

Brandon was made the face of the franchise before doing anything... Yeah he is good, but the marketing focus was him...even the announcers have been pushing him as the teams guys since day 1...I have always hated that...push the team and praise the players where their play deserve it!
