PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Trail Blazers paid tribute Thursday night to Maurice Lucas, remembered as much for the warrior he was off the court as he was on it.

Lucas, a fierce power forward who helped lead the Blazers to the 1977 NBA title, died Sunday after a long fight with bladder cancer. He was 58.

The Blazers were on the road when they heard the news about Lucas, who was an assistant coach with the team until cancer forced him to step away last season.

Back at the Rose Garden for a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team held a solemn moment of silence. Afterward, the crowd shouted "Luuuuuuke!" just as it did in his playing days.

The most touching moment for me last night was when I looked up to the rafters as saw Luke's retired number lit up with a single spot light. Pure class.

I couldn't be there in attendance for this one, though I would've loved to be.  I DID however watch it on TNT, and they actually showed Luke's # lit up.  Very cool, and as you said...pure class.  Kudos to whomever is responsible for that decision.  BTW...welcome to the boards ripcitysarah!  Appreciate your informative posts

Greg wants a fresh start. Portland wants a fresh start. And thank you, Siccolo, for comparing this to B Roy. Any draft prospect is going to be pretty impressed with what GO can do on the court... even a 75% GO. A kid that has no idea what NBA game...

To go another season with so many rookies is not a good idea. We need a couple of vets and atleast one young bench scorer. If we want a Center, go after Hawes from Philly and Dorrell wright can be signed as a free agent. We can trade our 2nd round...

Thanks Ricky.   I''ll be watching @ 10.   Haven''t seen enough right hand from Shazamm.   Without the ability to take his defender either way off the bounce, let alone finish at the cup with either hand?   Second rounder at best.

Sug81 I love Iggy but this team has numerous gaping holes throughout the depth chart so signing Iggy is not the best way to spend our limited funds

That roster looks pretty good, but if we would have enough cash Corey or Ronnie brewer would be nice
