two wins down, 80 to go! all right, maybe not 80, but we took care of the first back-to-back of the season, and the guys are looking pretty good, especially at closing games out in the fourth.

we face the knicks saturday at 4:30 pm (pacific). will Amar'e Stoudamaire be enpough to change the course for the knicks? does he have a good enough supporting cast. can the knicks depth match with ours? will Joel see his first action of the season?

any thoughts, worries, accolades or predictions?

Last night looked sooo good. There was much more movement off the ball, setting screens and from Aldridge being double-teamed the ball swung all the way to the weak side quickly. That is a great way to counter the double team when it is against a post player, that's the way the Spurs have done it for years and that's the way we should be doing it.

I'm not sure how the Knicks look this year, so really I don't have much to say until I see them play. I think the key here is to contain the Amar'e/Felton pick and roll and defend the 3 pt line better than we have so far. What are your thoughts?

Since I can't watch the games, I'll just say I want to see LMA take it to the paint, try to draw fouls on Amar'e (got this "idea" from our newest IAMA leader, RipCitySarah's fan statement, hehe) and just be aggressive in general, if possible. I don't know how they will react to LMA in terms of the D, but that is my hope.

I have to agree with both of you, the guys looked real good for these first two games and I was thinking how B Roy had said he wanted the ball more and I like (as I am sure he does) the results this far - I love it when he is knocking down those jumpers consistently and gotta love the 3's at the quarter buzzers vs. LAC.

I'd love to see us go 3-0 - I heard that this is our first 2-0 start since '04 from Joe Freeman's video over on OL. Overall though, I am excited to see how we do on this road trip - I think it will be a great confidence boost at this stage to get a good trip under our belts.

Lastly, I just installed this Desktop Gadget (Windows 7) on my laptop that shows the Blazers score, so will find out if we won once my computer boots up - without having to open the browser - just thought I would share that :-D

GO BLAZERS - take it to the Knickerbockers and silence MSG!!!

The thought of playing on another team's opening night still worries me and you know the Knick fans will be jacked up to see them with a real NBA roster for once. We do catch them on the 2nd half of their back-to-back which could be key.

Bottom line: We must guard the perimeter. Danillo has killed us before in MSG and we can't let them get dialed in. I'd put Camby on Amare and throw different looks at him every time down the court. If we have to double him, so be it, but I'd rather one of their role players beat us, then STAT do it himself.

Amare by himself isnt enough to change there fortunes but if and when they get melo they will be one to be reckoned with.  Amare is able to get 30 pts in a game just by giving him the ball in the post and letting him goto work.

The knicks do have enough depth in my opinion but i think they lack the defense to beat us.  They have a good point guard, beast at pf offensively and on the board, a potential all star in anthony randolph, and a team filled with 3pt shooter.  The only decent defenders on the team are Wilson Chandller, Anthony Randolph, and Raymond Felton.

We have shown in the last 2 games that we have a plan late in games and can efficiently score and shut down the opponent in the closing minutes and for that i am very proud.

Personally i think Wesley should start at the 1 because Raymond Felton is fast and Wes can take him out of the game with his physicality.

Have u heard any reports of Joell coming back, there were concern about losing games early in the season but with Joell Back this early we could go on a mean streak thanks to the extra board and blocks.

If we win today I got a nickname for the team. "Opening Night Assassins." Hopefully we play 4 quarters of solid, hard-nosed defense instead of 3 quarters or mediocre defense and 1 quarter of stifling D.

I agree D this game comes down to two things in my opinion.  1, Danilo if he gets started he wont stop so we need to have a body on him at all times never have the person guarding him jump to double Amar'e.  2, Keep Wilson Chandler off the boards need to box him out every time and cut off the lanes.  Amar'e will his points but if we attack him head on we can take him out of the game.

It may come down to a battle of pace.  Roy and crew prefer to play a much more methodical style than does NY.  The team that establishes and controls the tempo will win the game.  Rebounding always a huge factor with said control.  The Knicks are not a particularly good defensive team, so it will be difficult to run if they are unable to get stops consistently.  Working for good shots while using clock, rebounding, and the D that you all have mentioned and this one will be a snoozer.  Speaking of quality looks.  I am sincerely hoping that we are not going to see LaMarcus out beyond the arc now that he had some success there in Los Angeles.

Im going to say that POR will have no Answer for Amare, and all those who put him as OVERRATED, are going to be disappointed.
But portland could pull it off.

i agree pretty much on all counts. defense and rebounding will be the keys for us. we should be able to slow down Stoudamire inside with Camby and should be able to thow a double team on him, or even let Marcus switch off on him from time to time. if Stoudamire is playing man-to-man on LaMarcus, then let LaMarcus roam outside and take Stoudamire with him, thus clearing the lane. that decoy effect worked well against phoenix. controlling the tempo will be important and i think we can do that with Brandon and Andre. take advantage in the knicks' defensive liabilities with ball movement. lastly, our bench needs to step up and give the guys some quality rest. there's no reason we can't win this game.

@BDawg: you do know that LaMarcus' trey came at the end of the shot clock, right?!

I'm aware, yes.  Rules are often born of exceptions.  Just hoping that shot will remain the latter.

The strategy you speak of, where by our C pulls the opposing C out onto the perimeter defensively, is precisely why Duck had the career he did here in Portland.  TP, Clyde, Buck, and Jerome all benefited greatly from having Duckworth on the floor for that very reason.  Miss ya Duck!

But seriously, that was a LONG shot from almost the half court and he shot it like a free throw. But I agree, I don't want Lamarcus roaming out by the three point line so far away from rebounding and posting up.

BDawg: it's been about a year, hasn't it? what a great guy he was.

BDawg/TomL: i don't think anyone -- LaMarcus included -- has any designs on him shooting from that far out. on that play, he simply had to choose between shooting it or letting the shot clock go. i have to say this: your comments seem like overreactions.

I think you are overreacting, I was just saying I hope he doesn't play out there, I also was saying that was a great shot. Besides, in an interview at fanfest he said he was given the green light by coach to shoot threes this year. I really don't see how that was overreacting.

And it's been two years since Duck passed... doesn't seem like it though. I just remember I was machining (which I no longer do) when I heard it on the radio. I also rode by his memorial dock and finally realized where it is this summer. I think that was a great idea.

Oh you don't stop great players. I'll ask you, does anyone stop JaBroni James? Nope. It's close to near impossible especially when his midrange game is on, but what the Celtics and Magic have done against him back in Cleavland was let him have the ball and make him work for everything as best you can at the same time shutting down his supporting cast. Thus no championships and he took his talents to South Beach.

Long story short, shut down the Knickerbockers supporting players and life will be easier for us.

turning it around on me? Tom, don't start; as i told Tay, that never works. the point is that i'm not the one repeatedly saying that they don't want him playing out there (you've said it a few times). if Nate has given him a green light, then that's up to them. that shot from the other night is the only time he's played beyond the 18-20 foot range that we're used to seeing him play. in fact, most people think it's great that he his it, and leave it at that. the circumstances of the shot (i.e. shot clock) is the only real reason he was out there this one single time. as i said, i don't think even LaMarcus has any plans to play out that far. the comment seems moot.

yeah, a little over two years since Kevin died. it really doesn't seem like it's been that long. he was the blazers center when my family moved up here (november 1992) and my dad always liked his game. dad always said it was unfortunate that he was traded when he was because he'd have probably had a better career if he remained in portland.

I'm looking at Batum to have a pretty good game here as well. When I look at the Knicks roster they don't have much rebounding power. If we crash the glass like we have been we should have a huge margin with rebounding. Nic crashes the glass pretty well and should benefit.
Also looking at Nic to maybe have another double-double in points and rebonds this game as well with Gallinari guarding him.

There should be no way the Knicks shouls beat us on Sat.  The Celtics will wear out the mediocre Knicks for us tommorow nite!?  The "tired" Knicks with there weak bench, will be ground down by the FARRRR superior (rested) Blazers, with there methodical style of play and recent success against the Knicks!    The only way they could beat us would be:  To get a 15 point or higher 1st half lead, while getting a big edge on 3 point%, while getting alot of luck, e.g., ticky tack fouls on Camby and LA early!!     The Knicks-just like the Mets- have a new team each and every year, therefor never being the cohesive team that is Portland now!!!                                                                                                                                                                                      Am I right??

Knicks shot 27 three's against Boston tonight. Gotta get those long rebounds, and take off for fast break opportunities. Make Amare work defensively, he'll be a little tired on New York's back to back.

Have you guys forgotten about Batum, & Matthews? I guarantee the Knicks won't drop 27 3's on us.
2 Lock-down defenders on the perimeter, I just don't see it happening.
I don't think the Celtics we're prepared for the 3's, but after last nights game I'm sure we will be.

@TayC, you're right about not being able to stop Amare, but they can definitely affect his game by throwing Batum/Camby on him here and there. I hope your not counting on Amare, because if you are, you're on the wrong website lol.

As for the way we've been playing, I feel like the guys have been playing tough throughout Q1, enough to get a size-able lead, and then doing just enough to keep up in Q 2-3 to stay fresh, and then cutting the lights out in Q4. In my opinion it works for us, I think it's a good strategy.

It would work better for us to play every quarter like the 4th. And all we have to do to stop Amar'e is have lots of Blazer fans show up with giant blown up photos of Amar'e's espn photo with clever captions on it that I'm sure everyone knows what they would say.

Also I think Boston has a much better defensive team than we do, and if NY got up 27 3's on them, it will be tough for us to stop that. Hopefully they are clanging the majority of them. On Boston everyone plays tough D, here only Marcus, Batum and Wes do it, Andre and Rudy try and Roy and Lamarcus only do it when they feel like it.

I turned it around on you because that's how I felt as it seemed very condescending about something so trifle! If you don't agree with us that is fine, we were just discussing our thoughts on this discussion board. And it is no secret that Lamarcus wants to become a 3 point threat and he works on it every year in the offseason, which is why he said he has been given the green light. Which is why I agreed with bdawg. If he has to shoot from there to beat the clock I don't have a problem with it at all, if they regularly ran plays for him to do that I wouldn't like it, unless he's making like 35 to 40% or something. Which, up to this point he has been far from it.

And it was unfortunate that many, many fans always gave Duckworth a hard time about his weight, and it didn't help that he was extremely sensitive about what the fans thought of him. It's funny that fans treat nice guys (like Duck ) who care about them like crap and then at the same time get mad at the ones who don't care. Kind of like with Greg. They both had/have problems that are mostly beyond their control and yet people rag on them non stop as if it will change things.

I would love to see LA shoot the long ball... Don't get me wrong I want him banging just as much as anybody, but at the same time every once in a while, if he is as good as hyped on his shot, run that pick and pop out there.  Every pick and pop we do is like 3 feet inside the arch, I'm not saying often, heck not even nightly.  Certain teams with dominant physical bigs, need to be pulled out, if LA hits one out there it will pull them out all he needs is one every 5 games or so just enough so players know he CAN shoot it and worry that he will.  If this doesn't happen I'm fine just my thoughts.

Danilo went 0-6 from the field last game on limited minutes due to a lingering sore wrist, and there's speculation that the trade rumors have disrupted his and the team's chemistry. So they have too many question marks to answer before they find success, and the Blazer's have already gotten the ball rolling on defense and rebounding, so going against a jump shooting team should give us the advantage we need on the road.

Wow, we crashed two home openers this year! Batum with the block of the night (better be on NBA.com)! Great game by Brandon and Dre. See how dangerous we are when those two are on the same page?
Quote of the night goes to Walt Frazier, "Miller has been the one creating havoc on us here in the fourth, and now he's sitting on the bench! I don't understand that!" (or something pretty close to that)
I didn't understand that either. We didn't score when he was out at around one minute left to play.
Also another run to close out the game!! 17-3 this time! I really thought we were going to lose this one when we were down 9 in the 4th, I went to make something to eat, came back and we already tied the game! I changed my mind at that point.

3-0. Heck yeah! First time we've been 3-0 since the beginning of the 1999-2000 season. Dre was clutch with the FTs tonight. LMA, not so much. I would have been much more comfortable if those FTs were made. In the words of the Schonz, "You've got to make your free throws."

let's just hope that this was LaMarcus' rare bad shooting night from both the field and the line.

like all three games thus far, this was a team effort with guys stepping up right when we needed them. i was particularly impressed with Brandon in the second quarter, Wesley in the first half and Andre in the fourth quarter.

Haha I just wanted to point out that earlier I had posted that the Knicks we're NOT going to drop 27 3's on us tonight. They Knicks only successfully drained 7 out of 28 attempts. They live and die by the 3 haha. Oh and @TayC, who had a better night? Aldridge or Stoudemire?...Thats right lol

Wow, another great 4th Qtr performance from the team - that's good to see. I heard it was a 17-3 run to the close the game - love it! Some big plays - the block by Nic, that huge 3 from Dre. very cool, to say the least. Of course, great to see Brandon keep the scoring up. It was good to see LMA get 20 and 10, but ewww, 8/20 FG's shooting, yikes.

Let's hope with the next few games, he can get something going, but thus far, someone has stepped up - like Kassandra says, it was a team effort - it should be like that every night, as this is a team game :-) but of course, it would be nice to see certain individuals get going on the offensive end. I really wish I could have watched this game - sounds like it was heart-pounding - which I was able to observe just from the highlights. That's pretty cool that they reviewed that play when the ball apparently went off of Amar'e's hip.

Anyways, awesome to be 3-0!!! Let's keep it going!

I am a fan of Lillard, Batum, Lopez, LA and T Rob taking it to other teams!

If you read the yahoo recap of the game you find that it basically talks about how the Knicks didn't do what they were supposed to, therefore they didn't win. They were supposed to change this and they were supposed to change that. They didn't. Lucky for the Blazers they happened upon the poor Knicks on their home opener to receive the free gift called a win.

The national media is just ridiculous.

Also I think I finally will admit to the root cause of all of Lamarcus' problems. He's just not a smart player! I don't know how many times I have seen him save a damn ball going out of bounds under the oppositions hoop and they either get a score or a foul or both. You just don't blindly try to throw it back without looking when you are there for that reason! The first couple of years I kept thinking well he's still kinda new, but it is his 5th year now. I think this is also why he panics when a double team comes, it short circuits his brain. Anyway I don't want to be all hard on him, he did have a double double two games in a row now. He is also getting a bit more aggressive and those are good things to see.

lol i'll take LaMarcus over Stoudemire last night, especially minus Stoudemire's six turnovers!

LAS11291: at the same time the knicks shot 7-28 from behind the arc, we shot 6-13. i'll take 46 perdcent over 25 percent any day!

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
