Got to say, pretty impressed with Armon Johnson's play so far. Not ready yet to say that he'll do that every game because it is just the first game, but with the time he was given today he made the most of it and you can't ask for more from a second round-pick rookie.

From what I saw (which was just the second half) defensively in the 4th quarter we did a really nice job making Nash work for everything he got after he torched us in the 3rd. That defense for our team hopefully keeps making improvements and stay consistent. Good game to start the season, now let's see what our front court can do versus the Los Angeles Clippers.

AJ was money on Dragic he was crossing him on Offense and cutting him off on Defense it was great to see, and that fast break with the dump to Matthews was beautiful.  Very happy with Wes he showed he is worth the money.  Rudy looked happy and like he was having fun.  I hope he can change his mind as we can keep him around (not likely but I can hope).  Roy got started early which was good to see and LA was fantastic.  Nico was great in the 1st half but stopped going to the Offensive boards in the late 2nd quarter and 2nd half.  Loved the hustle from Camby and Fabricio was actually helpful in the 3 minutes he played but forced a turnover and gave a hard foul.  I was overall impressed and was more excited for this season than any other.

IMO, very fortunate to ESCAPE tonight with a win.  You live and die by the 3.  Tonight, Nic was able to hit a couple of late dagger long balls, but the percentages say you'll die more often than live if that's what you end up relying on late in games.  Offense very scary.  Defense, much improved.  Nate showed a surprising amount of trust in rookie Armon Johnson and in Rudy, both playing substantial roles in a tight game at home.  Welcome Oberto!!!

Nice opening game this year. We kept our legs into the 4th and instead of standing around we attacked the basket with results. Great job by the new guys Johnson and Wes! They will be a nice fit :-)

Nico! Nico! Nico! Thats the way you open a season!

Strong start, the defense bended mid game but didn't break, and the team locked it down in the 4th to pull out the win...very '08-'09-ish.

Not bad overall, the D was good (10 steals, 48 rebs) but gave up a lot of easy buckets and points in the paint.
It seemed like the only player Alvin Gentry wanted to deny was LMA, who got the instant double team all night and really couldn't get his game going. But a another bucket and another rebound would have got him a double double too.

Bench was rock solid, AJ played great. DC was solid. Matthews was well worth the money. (and he was money!)

Don't wanna read to much into the first game of the season cuz there are plenty more to play... but I was very impressed with Wesley Matthews, and I am almost certain he was the perfect pickup for us in the offseason. We played great defense, shot well, and our offense was clicking.  Good all around performance... but its just one game.
Also, nate did play 10 players, and it seems that when Joel and Greg come back, some decisions will have to be made with regard to playing time.
Some players will see time cut... but maybe thats just me

It's not just you, DC and Camby are going to have their time cut, but really it's not a bad thing for Camby. Keeps him fresh and between him, Pryz and Oden that's 18 fouls to use as enforcers. When we are healthy this team is going to be scary on defense for sure. Itching for that day.

excelent start by Mathews, Roy, Batum, Johnson, Rudy, Camby and Cunninham.  Hopefully they continue their strong play.  Also Miller played well but he better start playing even better or else armon is going to start taking away his minutes.  Four players who stood out most to me where Camby, Roy, Armon and Mathews.  If we can keep up the good work I think we will finish 2nd in the west behind the Lakers.  Unfortunatly I dont have confidence that we can keep up this level of play since this was not a very good team.

I don't think Miller will lose minutes at all to Armon. He had 12 points and 9 assists tonight? With 2 turnovers from bogus calls? That's awesome stats from him. He did his job of distributing the ball, what I'd like to see is more time with Miller and Rudy on the floor together.

Liked it.  However, doubtful we will see it very often this year.  Small ball works with Phoenix because of their lack of size in the frontcourt.  I too, thought Rudy embraced his opportunity tonight, coincidently enough, against the very team he last had such an opportunity...and blew it.  Rudy once again looked inspired.  Wes has the ability to play much bigger than his frame may suggest too, making that line-up a bit more effective

Soild day of basketball the first game wasn't even close until the celtics fell asleep and Lebron got hot but it wasn't enough. I wasn't expecting much out of that game but one thing i got from it was it's definitely going to be Lebron's team. The night cap games were good all i have to say is if everything goes right the Rockets can be a dangerous team.

And now to our game i felt that it was a feeling each other out game early since there were changes to both teams i loved that Brandon was aggressive and so was Batum especially rebounding we need that since our bigs aren't there, Camby Was solid as always, Andre force some things but was also solid, LA didn't have the game he wanted but that's the respect the suns have for him by double and triple teams so he'll bounce back. The Bench Was Good Rudy had that energy that was missing last year and he played his game, Wesley was doing his thing on offense & defense, Dante was also solid, Oberto gave us a good three minutes he'll really help our team once he knows the system But AJ was great in his minutes he look comfortable out there i see him being the backup PG from time to time but the defense in the 4th was huge i love it Wesley and Batum wore Nash out and we all know he's the engine for Phoenix another thing I notice was where the crowd i mean i thought it was still a pre season game until the middle of the third then the rose garden finally woke up but it was like that in the LA-HOU game.

I was a litte concerned because it looked like we forgot that J-Rich drop 42 on us last time he was here but we were fortunate he didn't get hot i guess that the Amare effect they are definitely going to miss him.

Stat Of The Night: Batum 19pts 11Rebs

That lineup scared me... looked like we were trying to conform to their game and we need to dictate the pace.  It didn't kill us but I wouldn't call it a success... How about Batum on that jumpball with Lopez!  I loved the fast hands by everybody and that they are ready to dive for the ball, scary for injuries, but love the pride and passion.

Wesley and Armon changed the complexion of the game. It was a blast watching those two scrap for each and every second they were on the floor together. Also, how automatic is Batum from downtown? I just hope he continues to be aggressive.

One cause for concern: No movement out of double teams. Phoenix keyed in on Aldridge and the rest of the guys stood around instead of making the easy cut to the hoop. But hopefully that can be picked up in the film room and changed whenever they see the double team again.

He did pass out of one to get an assist but that double team was sooo fast. I think the extra defender was already there when Aldridge catches the ball he has to give it right back. He had some possessions where he was one on one but couldn't do much with it. I'm really surprised they don't have something in place already for the double team considering Nate likes to start games off with Aldridge down low and get that established...if the other team knows its coming and are going to double team him we need a back-up option to take advantage of that.

Not sure if Andre should be the one doing the entry pass, his jumper is a little suspect at times...just sayin'.

What I was most surprised with was Roy's improvement from downtown. I also LOVED how almost every time LA got the ball they double-teamed him immediately. Really shows how scared of him Phoenix is. ;) And like everyone else has been saying, loved how scrappy Wes and Armons were.

One more thought; I feel we need to work on our free throw shooting a bit. I remember LA giving up a pair as well as Rudy missing a few. (Which is concerning considering he's 87% from the line.)

Wow, great win for us -as we remained steady in the fourth when it was close . . anyways, my thoughts based on the highlights and some reading:

Overall, sounds like we were not "with it" for the first three quaters, but hopefully that is just opening night thing . .

On Johnson: I liked the way he ran the floor and that fast break with Wesley was sweeet! Sounds and looks like he will be good for this team and provides some fire to the team

On Wesley: Love what he did in this game - his aggressiveness should also provide a little something that we may not have had last year

On Nic: As I said in the pregame thread - I wanted to see him have a nice game and what did we get :just 19 pts and 11 rbs - VERY NICE way to start the season and I think once we settle in more, I hope that will be become consistent and even increase from time to time, when he is in the groove. Gotta just love his game - I think he is our future star for sure - what a great draft pick to say the least.

On Rudy: I don't know if it's him or Nate's doing, but I really don't like it that he just shoots three's. I don't know if we all think he has no future with the team, and although I know he is a good shooter, he could do a lot more, but maybe after what happened this summer, maybe it's too late to recover. He had some nice passes, which I have to like, but really, he should attack the basket, but again, don't know if he is in the "mood" to work that much.

On Roy: Nice game of course number wise.

On Miller: Didn't see anything special (again, just from highlights), but I wouldn't mind him breaking out for 52 again some time this year :-)

OK, I think that is it - good to win #1, let's hope we are 2-0 after today

    Peace from Prague :-)

Rudy actually did a lot more than hoist up 3's.  He played defense and contested shots and I think he did a good job running the offense If he wanted to stay I would say we should try to develop him into a crossover guard get him with some PG time he passes well and can hit the long ball I actually was impressed by Rudy.

Thanks for the further details Fallen_Deity. That is good to hear.

    Just to add:

On LMA: 8 points???? Got to do better than that. I hope with each game, he gets up into double-double territory on a consistent basis. He should be really scoring in the 20's every game - he needs to pound it inside, get the to FT line. Those jumpers are sweet no doubt, but switch it up a little - back your man down and then make a move. Of course, if he can get the fast-break points on dunks and layups, that's all good too.

He was being double teamed anytime he got the ball and they were doing a good job of it.  Think of him taking less shots as a sign that he didn't force the shot from a double and he was smarter passing out of it than he was last year.

Aha, thanks again. I guess I can't really comment on individual play when I can't see the game in it's entirely or at least in large chunks. Yes, it's good then that he isn't forcing shots - that makes me cringe as well.

I think Miller's time here in Portland could possibly be limited.. He and Roy just flat out don't play that great together.. I was really impressed with Armon tonight. He made me totally forget about Bayless and showed me that losing Bayless wasn't such a terrible thing. If he plays with that hustle and determination every night, I'll be a happy camper. I think Wesley was right, our guys need to show more "fight" out there on the court, especially our starters. I think our guys need to watch videos of the Celtics. They play HARD every single play. Sure, we came away with the W thanks to Nicolas bailing us out in that 4th quarter but that is a game we could have easily lost. We definitely have room for improvement, especially on the defensive side of the court. Can't wait to see our whole team healthy!

Great game for the new guys WM and AJ. They are scrappy and relentless on both sides of the ball, It's really great to see the energy from those two. BR was pretty good on offense not so good on D. LA, not to impressed by his game. Batum had a nice all around game. It's good he wants to rebound. The Defensive was nice to see from this team. All this is obvious, but I just wanted to say I'm happy with the overall effort of our team.

Great start for the season!! LOVE Wes and what he brings to our team. LA has to work on that double team cause after other teams do their homework, its not going to stop. Granted it isn't all his fault since no one was really helping him out. And its amazing how different the tempo of the game is when Miller is on the bench. I know its a delicate balance but I love the tempo when he's NOT playing.

Want to see how they do at NY, CHI, MIL. Hoping for 5-0 and to number 6 on OKC

One thing LA doesn't do very well is passing out of the double team, but that isn't entirely his fault. We don't cut enough period. My coaches always used to tell me to cut toward the baseline on the strong side against the double team if the post player is getting double teamed, not all the way to the basket if people were shadowing. Our team does this sometimes, but it's not often enough and it's usually Miller or Camby sadly.
