Casey went to practice this afternoon and was told via Rich Cho that Patty has made the roster, but Jeff has been in fact waived to make room for Mr. Mills.

Its a crumby situation for Jeff, but I don't think he'd have it any other way if it meant his boy Patty got to make the team.  We can always re-sign JP in the offseason for those JP fans out there.

What are your thoughts on this? Like that Patty got his spot but sad to see Jeff go? Did you think it was inevitable?

I should also add that a lot of people will be upset about "doing Jeff wrong" by waiving him. But, it really was the only logical, albeit difficult decision for a team who needs all the depth they can have. JP wouldn't have been able to play at all this year, so by waiving him, he still gets his contract and his contract still counts against the salary cap, but it now opens up a roster spot. I do hope he is still able to rehab with the team though.

It sucks but its part of being a NBA player. I do hope he rehabs and can join the team next season.

@DHawes22 - Patty isn't going to play either though.  For team moral, I'd rather have a street clothed JP on the bench, psyching out out guys to play every game still, than a healthy Patty mills on the bench.  Neither will see minutes. Patty is last on the depth chart. I don't think the blazers did him wrong though, he'd be on the team if it wasn't for his injury, I think he understands that.

Moral goes along way though! JP would of been a better keeper than Patty, but it's an understandable business move. He'll be back next year with us!

Patty Mills is one of my favorites. He may not be a B. Roy or a LaMarcus, but the boy plays with heart, and that goes a long way. I hope Jeff can come back once he is recovered, but I am excited that Patty Mills will have a spot!!

I don't understand the Blazers obsession with guards.  No offense to Patty, but I've seen him play several times for our team and was not impressed.  I know that he wowed the D league last year, but I struggle understanding where he fits in.  He'll never play- unless we're up by 20 points in the last 4 minutes.  I say waive them both- re-sign Big Penny when we can and ensure that we're building for the future when Camby hangs up his hat.  We don't need Mills on our roster.

I love both Patty and Pendy -- they bring a lot to the team that others dont but I am incredibly sad to see Pendy go -- he is one of my favorites on the team. I really hope that they bring him back for next season. I am torn in two when it comes to thinking about whether or not he was wronged. If he was healthy, I believe he would not have been waived but since he is injured, I suppose waiving him makes sense. I understand the logic in bringing in another big man -- not sure that I like the fact that they brought him in so last minute when the season starts tomorrow -- not sure how that will mess with the dynamics of the team. Time will only tell. I am with you Dustin -- I am glad he gets the rest of his contract and I also hope he can rehab with the team. I think he would also choose to be waived knowing he cant play if it meant that Patty could stay with the team. I just hope he is back next season. That guy has so much heart and he loves this city and this team and I believe it is a mutual feeling.

Hoping Mills will get some meaningful minutes this season if were keeping him again. Is he going to be our "red shirt" PG again this year?

I have been in the mind all along that they would waive Pendy, since he is out for a year and is still getting paid. If we let Oberto go and re-sign Pendy in the off-season and nobody gets hurt and we get to hang on to Patty one more year or use him for trade bait.

I am like the posters above it is business and the only logical step to make. Isn't the Blazers responsible for Pendy's rehav?

Great ! Another season for Mills to ride the bench. Not enough time for JBay, but lets keep Mills .... Good grief .  More pg fetish over bigs for insurance.
So much for Cho's  A from me this weekend, even though we know it was not his decision ( again ) :(

Sad for Jeff but knew it was going ot happen- makes sense business wise since he won't be able to play anyway. Not sure we needed another guard that won't play but I like Mills so am ok with it. Hope we will be able to bring Jeff back next year!!

Kim I knew you'd respond like that when I saw the page title! I still love ya!

I think this is the only logical decision to make, Patty was already offered a minimum contract, not sure if it was or is now guaranteed, but he becomes a backup incase they were dead wrong with AJ, as well as someone who AJ has been fighting with for a spot as well as making a friendship. I see AJ and Patty hug and joke a lot, so I think it will be great for both of them, somewhat similar to thorton and collison last year, obviously one is a pure pg and one is a combo guard, but both were good talent that accumulated trade value, just as both patty and AJ are in position to do this year.
We have enough depth at the 3, whether you wanna believe it or not, Babbs is hungry for playing time, and so he's our fallback if we have injuries at the 3, but he's not going to get much PT (behind Dante who's also not going to get as much PT as he wants) without an injury to someone in that position. With all the depth we have now at the 5, and henceforth the 4 (camby will play more 4 if all are healthy), we can afford to have a good morale player such as patty, who can actually suit up, unlike Jeff, someone who knows the system, and is a little more proven than a rookie, but still has enough upside to be of value to us now and/or in a trade. SO GIVE IT A REST ITS A GOOD MOVE.
We have more than enough GM's, scouts, assistant gm's now, don't automatically assume we know the whole situation, give our new management time to make a mistake before you start screaming to jump ship.

Don't underestimate Patty's friendship with Rudy. Those two are very tight and in fact, Patty is a guy on the team who everyone loves and he keeps the team loose, ala Travis when he was here. Rudy's been killing it this preseason, so maybe they're hoping that Patty can help him out with his homesickness?

I agree hawes, i think Nate learned a little about himself as a coach from the whole sergio situation. Sometimes giving a person a friend, when he's from a different country, is something you have to accomodate.

This is a tough deal for Pendergraph, but the right decision overall. The Trail Blazers need to do what's best for the team and keeping a healthy Patty looks like a good move.

This move proves to me that Portland is in it to win it starting this year.

This is a bad ass hardcore move that makes me think that perhaps Portland now has the people (read management) to actually be a cut throat go for all or nothing type of enviorment that most Championship lvl teams are ...

Tho it makes me feel bad for Jeff .. I know the cat has game, and with any luck we will be able to resign him next off season..

This is my thoughts on the matter.

IMO, Patty wasn't kept to be a Blazer.  I don't believe what Cho negotiated in return for JBay was for Portland either.  We'll see.  Remember, y'all heard it first from me.

BTW, has anyone else taken notice to the giant posterboard on the grain elevator being changed?  Same slogan, different picture.

Ok so lets see if what I'm reading here is right.  First Patty was accused on this forum of only being a "international specialist" and not capable of playing in the NBA and now on this thread the usual moaners  throw in rubbish that Patty is only on the team to help engineer good results from Fernandez. Plus don't get me started on Coach Kim.  Patty has at least shown enough courage to come back to Portland and try for a spot on a team that quite frankly was going to waive him.  In fact as a Patty Mills long time fan I wished that the Blazers would have cut him during the summer and he would of at least had the opportunity to trial with another ball club - one that wasn't guard heavy. Rumors from Patty's management was that he had interest from the Bulls and the Hornets to name a couple. Obviously someone in the Blazers organisation has faith in Patty to want to hold on to him even if it's the 15th spot, if he's no good waive him, trade him etc etc.  Perhaps the inner sanctum of the Blazers coaching staff see the qualities that Patty brings to the table. Prior to being drafted and with his injuries he was highly regarded, but since being suffocated on a long guard heavy bench and only having junk minutes to gauge his worth, it seems Blazer fans on this website are lining up to rubbish him. History will show that this kid has left his homeland and family at a young age to pursue his dream of playing NBA basketball, lead his National team as a teenager, was pivotal in his College teams successes at St Mary's Gaels, sat on the bench for an entire season; and was Team first and did everything that was asked from him. He was written off as a waiver or trade possibility by all and sundry, but still works his but off knowing that  his employment wasn't guaranteed and finally when he is rewarded with a contract, he was humble and gracious enough to thank Blazer fans for their support.  For me this is the kind of player you hold onto and they don't come around often.  Kim I hope your nausea clears up soon, sorry to hear that a player that busts his backside to be on this team makes you feel like vomiting - maybe Patty can get Batum to send you a card.

we waived peddy cuz this is his last year and whats the point of signing a new contract with him if he is injured he could be like oden nd just keep on getting injured so its a smart business move, its money we deal with here and lots of injury problems with this team so its nothing big plus its not like peddy was the best player out here anyways not even in top 10. so its moving on time nd winning 52 games this yr then eliminating thunder=)
