the season starts with a rematch of last year's playoff series with the suns.

we're dinged up at center, but phoenix no longer has Amar'e Stoudimire. that leaves us to deal with Robin Lopez and Channing Frye. i think it goes without saying that we have to contend with Nash. is Wesley the answer to defending jason Richardson? how about Nicolas vs. Grant Hill?

    any thoughts?

I just can't wait for it to start! I might go to the game. I hope to see Lamarcus continue to improve and Roy to be aggressive from the 1st quarter until the 4th quarter buzzer. Hopefully Wes and Camby are ready to go!

being there would be great, but impossible for me :(

i think we match up well against the suns now that Amar'e is not there. they simply don't have the options without him. we've also still got a lot of depth which will help us.

Phoenix lost every one of their pre-season games, and by an average of 23 points.  I was at the Denver game last Thursday and was impressed with the overall play in the second half.  If the Blazers come out and play the way they did in that second half against Denver, their season will start with a convincing W.

Wow! An average of 23 points a game! Did Nash play at all? I hope we take them seriously! I'm sure they will for the opening game of the season though.

My mistake.  Apparently I misunderstood Jason Quick.  Phoenix went 2-6 during pre-season.  Sure though, that their losses were by an average of 23.  We thought OUR pre-season was disappointing!  They dropped their last game against the Thuggets 144-106.  After their season opener here in Rip City, they play IN Utah, then go home to face the Lakers the next night...for an early (and BRUTAL) back-to-back.  Tough stretch if you're a Phoenix fan

Without Amar'e LA will have no problem dominating. Richardson has always played weak defense against Roy (he scored his career-high 52 against JR and the Suns), we'll have Wesley on Nash and Batum on Hill, or vice-versa, and Camby is always reliable so I have a good feeling this will be a very good match-up.

Yah, that Richardson guy is good, but Brandon is better. Our bench should hang in there, but our starters need to win this game.

Our team will out play the Suns because they have no "D."  Lopez will not be able to stop our guys!  we will shut them down inside and force them to shoot over the top.  We have an aggressive defencesive minded team that when all is said and done if any team scores more then 100 against us they will most likely win, but no way does that happen.  Slow the Suns Down to a walking pace and make them run plays.  Slow Down! is the theme of our first game!

    Kassandra:

I don't think Wesley is a savior, but he is a smart good player, both defensively and offensively. I think Wesley can defend Richardson and Nic can guard anybody, OOPs, Grant Hill.

Last year in the play-offs Nic guarded Nash because of their deadly pick and roll, when they ran the pick and roll with Stoudimire and Nash, we could switch on the pick and roll and Nic would end up on Stoudemire and LMA on Nash which wasn't to bad, because LMA is fast and tall, and Nic could cover Stoudimire. I don't know how we will do it this year with our added help. They won't put Nash on miller because Miller can post him up so easily. Last year Phoenix but Nash on Nic because he was always out on the 3 pt line and hardly ever got the ball. That is why Nate told Nic to learn to post up then they can't hide Nash on him. That would make them pay by exposing their weak link on defense. I seen a video of Nic and BRoy practicing posting up; Nic did OK spinning right, but had problems spinning left. That was many moons ago, so I think he has learned.

Do you think Camby the Canby man can hold his own against Lopez. Lopez is younger and stronger and a pretty decent center, When they put Frye in I think LMA will switch and guard him and he will have to guard LMA and there is no way he can do that effectively. Do you think Turky glue will play Power forward or small forward. I don't know who will be assigned to him.

They have that new PG that is supposed to free Nash for the 2gd. I don't know why. I know he can't guard BRoy.

With the starting five in tack, I don't think they can hide Nash anywhere.

    Those are just my thoughts.

I hope Babbit gets used in this game, this is the kind of team (lacking depth in the front court) that Babbit should be able to match up with at the 3 or 4. I'd like to see Babbs throw in a top of the key bank shot in Turkoglu's face....

Put Batum on Nash. The WHOLE game. Suffocate him. Throw different traps and looks at him. Get him out of his comfort zone, much like we did during Game 4. Put Roy/Wesley on Richardson. And do what they did to use last year, hide a player on a defense. They hid Nash on Batum because we didn't use him other than standing 3's. So put Miller on Hill. If they want to run their offense through 36 year old Grant Hill, be my guest!

i pretty much agree with that. someone mentioned Turgolu earlier (well, i think they said "Turkey Glue") and i don't think it matters which position he plays; i have one answer: Dante Cunningham. Dante has the quickness and the reach to cover the once almost-blazer, and he can cover either forward positions.

The only problem with Miller on Hill is Hill is 6'8" and Dre is 6'2". I think if Batum's on Richardson and Roy plays d on whoever he's guarding, it will be easier to contain Nash for Dre. But I don't remember who did Dre guard when Batum was on Nash?

Anyway, I don't think we will have a problem beating the living daylights out of them without Amar'e no matter how we defend them.

Hakim Warrick is one of the most explosive young, big guys. But not much of a jumper. Grant hill is aging by the second, i cant expect him to remain around for much longer, Batum should have no problem with him though.
The loss of amare really puts a dent in the pick and roll situation,  i think the suns had the most pick and rolls last years, actually it was just Nash and Amare. Lopez, some of you guys give alot of credit to him and i cant comment for certain on his skill, but i would go with Camby's experience taking the upper hand in that matchup.
Dragic however is my biggest concern, because he has learned so much from nash its like having a second steve nash, one for the bench and one to start, Armon will have his hands full for sure.
This will be a big game for Wesley, depending on what he can contribute off the bench, LaMarcus will also have to show that he's not taking any nonsense this season, also a deciding game in my eyes for him.

I feel like the suns are going to stick to the perimeter game much like they did in the playoffs, they might have some trouble working it inside, the blazers shouldnt have any trouble with either of those.

I just hope JayRich doesn't make 10 threes like he did in every game last post-season.  We need a guy who closes out on the shooters fast, and none of the Blazers did last year.  Hopefully Wesley can close out and put a hand up.  If he does, he should definitely guard JayRich.  I also like DHawes's idea of putting Batum on Nash!  Andre can easily guard Hill, and even though Channing's 6'11'', Roy can easily guard that softy-of-a three point shooter :)

Their defensive strategy will see no success because they can't afford to put Grant Hill on Andre Miller anymore.  We've got a healthy Roy, Matthews, and Batum, baby!!!!!

I don't even worry about the other match ups.  Appologies to you newer members who havent been here since the beginning. I can only repeat myself so much.  I fear no team, with how loaded the Blazers are.

No Roy guarding him last post-season...he'll be lucky if he gets 10 decent looks all game, JRich has been known to play poorly when Roy's guarding him.  :D

    wow, nice predictions!

with a healthy Brandon and now with Wesley, our defense will be much improved. Nicolas and LaMarcus will be very effective. i look for Rudy to have a nice game off the bench, and Marcus to give Lopez a lesson in rebounding.

i hadn't planned onmaking an actual prediction, but i'd have to say blazers by eight.

Sad that I can't watch the game as I'll be in lab.

Biggest question mark for me is where does Phoenix get it's offense from? Who do they run the pick and roll with? I believe Hedo is the starting power forward, from what I've seen from him in the past he really isn't effective in the pick and roll if he's not the ball-handler.

The bench of the Suns is still something you need to look out for, it got stronger with the additions of Josh Childress and Hakim Warrick...if we lose this game it's because that bench killed us.

Blazers win by at least 5 points.

I have this superstition. Whenever it's a big game or a hyped up game (such as this one because it's the home-opener) and it rains on that day...well we win.

Originally I thought we win by a big margin too, but then I thought back to the Suns bench. It pretty much stayed in tact and tore through teams, if they can do that again this game is going to be a fight.

aww, he is always thinking of me, <33.
I dont see how the team could be pysched, their still without their best two centers, they just lost a teamate who they had been playing with for the past 2 years. Armon is going to have to grow another set of arms to stay on Dragic, because that boi is comin up, quick.
I would count on Jay Rich to be strokin it all night long, with the loss of amare, like bertram said, the pick and roll isnt going to work out as well, and with all the players the have with the ability to hit the 3ball, you can count on them gettin trigger happy from downtown.

    and BTW you doo. :D

lets start this season off WITHOUT all the injuries, lets focus on team dynamics and not rely all on B Roy for the rescue, the last thing we need is for us to start out the season with Roy's knee out, after Pendergraph i can't help but see a repeat of last season's injury domino game happening again. hopefully some of our new player will keep our stars from getting worn out too quick so they can play stronger during their time o the floor.

Wow!  I do notice Lamarcus going to the basket more, although the stupid refs are allowing him to get cracked upside his head. Offensive board and put back was real nice to see. I hope he keeps it up! And BATUUUUM getting some rebounds and hustling! That is great! And I'm trying not to get too excited about this but, Armon Johnson!!!! Man I really really like what I'm seeing from him! Seriously love his defense!

2 or 3 times they have called non existent traveling calls on us and a bogus offensive foul on Dre, and of course the opposition always gets the benefit of the doubt and haven't been called for either of those things.

If what you say is correct with Aldridge (I didn't get to watch the first half, was busy burning stuff in Chemistry) that's a huge positive.

Man did Batum fill up that stat sheet or what?! I don't expect him to do that every night but even if we can get 10-12 points and 5-7 boards from him that would be awesome.

Just got home from the RG.  The offense (or lack of) still a problem :(  almost cost the home team the game were it not for some timely 3's from Nic.  The ball moved well, but the bodies didn't.  Many of Nash's 9 TO's were of the unforced variety as well.  Overall team D looked much improved, especially out on the perimeter.  Why is it that this team, with all of it's talent, continues to refuse to learn what a screen and pick are.  Moving without the ball seems to be a foreign language too.  With Roy on the floor, it was stand and watch.  While he sat, the game had more flow.  Just my opinion.  Oberto got an early call, and provided that interior attitude absent with Joel sitting.  Funny how there weren't any "and-1s" with Oberto in there, but many given up late.  My pet piev.  A win is a win though!  I was off by ONE point with my prediction...not bad.

What is the deal with Brandon Roy just standing around the WHOLE second half when he didn't have the ball? He doesn't move for anything except to go the other way. He doesn't move to get the ball, sets no screens and doesn't bother with rebounds. It seemed contagious for a stretch in the second half. At one point NOBODY moved when Lamarcus was looking to pass so he ended up shooting a jumper and missed. But there was one time when Dre got stuck and Batum cut through the key and Dre gave it to him for a 3. Roy never does that for Dre! Plus 97% of Brandon's shots were jumpers, he barely created anything driving in. So I wish Brandon would MOVE more and mix it up more on offense. His D is still lackadaisical too at times. The guy with Michael Holton on 95.5 is calling Dre out for not being a jump shooter (genius), but when the whole team stands around like that then yeah it sucks! He's better when he passes to cutters or drives and dishes when every one is moving. It would be nice if Roy moved once in a while.

I can't believe Oberto just arrived here yesterday and never even practiced with us and Nate threw him out there. ha ha! I definitely am glad we got him though.

Nate needs to play Batum more minutes, this is getting ridiculous, it's his 3rd year and he will only get better with more minutes. He tore it up in the fourth when the game was on the line! That was huge and maybe won the game for us. Ticked me off that right after he seemed to get in a groove in the 1st Nate pulled him.

Armon had a real solid performance for his 1st ever NBA game! I really like the way he plays, especially on D! Seriously, he is starting to look like a steal.

@TomL...did you notice twice early in the game, JRich taking it right into Brandon's chest in one-on-one situations for a lay-up and a dunk?  How about the three consecutive possessions that Childress took him to the rim and scored with ease?  I did.  Have to admit, was scratchin' my head a bit.

Armon's D is pretty good for his first game, but at times he did get over aggressive and got burned easily but Dragic. But that's a good thing for now, it's easier to learn to lay back a little than to learn how to get on people consistently. In time hopefully he'll keep improving.

But yeah, still seeing B-Roy and the rest of the blazers standing around on offense, especially in the third quarter and the first few minutes of the 4th. Even when Armon was in, the ball was moving only on one side of the floor and we scrambled to get a shot off. I'm praying this gets corrected sooner than later.

I think Childress will become a problem for the blazers if he is given the chance.  Oberto for arriving so late had a good stand.  I was happy with the performance but always room for improvement.  Tom I hear your frustration with Roy but its a marathon not a sprint he may be wanting to save some for tomorrow(I hope thats all it was).  No doubt Nate will say something during tape review about that.

I'm sure he does, but it's just in Roy's DNA as a basketball player. He's done it in college. He never really developed his game off the ball. However there was one play where he was moving and Dre found him under the basket for an easy close shot, but those plays are too far in between.

Yes BDawg I noticed those too, and was really annoyed with those plays. I can't figure out what it will take to get Brandon to have a consistent effort on D! And to not stand around. Maybe he needs some ginseng or something. He just doesn't seem excited to play any more. The guys on the radio are not worried about Brandon but I am. Especially when his jumpers don't fall.

Ohhh just heard Oden worked out with 5 on 5 contact!! Sweet.

Except it's been happening since last year, so I don't know what the problem is. The coach? Roy? Or both?

Trust me my friend, TomL has plenty of company!  I would hope that Brandon isn't "saving some for tomorrow" since pre-season is now over and the games count now.  I believe it was BRoys voice the sellout crowd heard saying "the time is NOW" before tip.  Childress did seem to be an issue, for whatever reason.  I was very pleased with Oberto's small stint.  For having just landed in Portland, he seemed to fit right in, almost seemlessly.  He brings that element of toughness in the paint.  His presence warns would-be slashers there will be a price to pay for coming in here.  Much needed on this team, especially without Joel.

I worried too but if we can keep rolling wins with Roy being off the ball passive it wont hurt AS much but still its like walking on a tightrope with your balance stick heavier on one side.  You may make it halfway but eventually the toll will be taken and you fall... Hope he has a net underneath him...

    @Fallen_Deity:  Well said.  Nice analogy.

BTW, was ALMOST as much a Celtic fan as I was a Blazer fan tonight.  With all due respect to the Miami Heat fans that post on this site, I was very happy to see them go down tonight.  That team is not unbeatable, at least not yet.  Their achilles is exactly what I said it would be.  I share Antonio Harvey's disdain for that team, and for the same reasons.  Again, sorry if I have offended anyone.

It comes from having a passion for writing lol.  Blazers should have a contest for a post-game write up for their site where the winner can be courtside for the game and interview a player of their choice for quotes to use in an article.  Wishful thinking... But thank you B im glad my thoughts translate well.

The Blazers were winning!  That is the key word, were.  Blazers are living proof that you can live and die by the jumper.  Lately it has been dying.

Hawes will be a hot commodity by the trade deadline, I would think the sixers could find a better offer.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...

Yeah and now Blazers have zero interest in Bynum. I really thought he was worth the small risk. If anything he would be at the end of our bench and we use him as a sub. Hopefully we do make some type of trade for a quality back up center. Right no...
