    Via ESPN-
NEW YORK -- NBA commissioner David Stern said Thursday there was no quantifiable progress in collective bargaining talks over the summer, and the league revealed it is seeking a reduction in player salary costs by about one-third.

Stern said the league wants player costs to drop $750 million to $800 million. Deputy commissioner Adam Silver said the NBA spends about $2.1 billion annually in player salaries and benefits.

"We would like to get profitable, have a return on investment," Stern said. "There's a swing of somewhere in the neighborhood of $750 to $800 million that we would like to change. That's our story and we're sticking with it."

Whoa. It seems like both sides want drastic changes. I can't blame Stern though for wanting a return on investment and you won't get it with $20 million salaries for a few players. If there is a work stoppage, I hope they are still able to get a shortened NBA season up and running much like they did in 99. If they let it take an entire season away, which is what happened to the NHL a few years back could be devastating for the league.

No mention of the prank call Stern received first Hawes ??  Or can you not speak of such things as a Blazer employee ??

Rumor on Blazers Edge , it was the Suns beat writer. More reason to kick their butts back to Phoenix next week !

    It was funny though.

Hopefully things will look better come All-Star break time. I'd really hate to have either a shortened season or worst case no season.

Feels like we were all duped as fans, "ya come buy our tickets, there's no problem in paradise, we aren't trying to screw over our workers by going walmart on their wages."
I liked the part where stern says in one of these articles, "“I don’t believe Billy wrote that because he wouldn’t threaten me with a lockout,” Stern said. “And all I can say about that is it’s part of negotiations.”
NBA would be pretty awesome if Stern didn't always have his thumb on the pulse, and his hand up the ref's ***** like a puppeteer.

NFL is in the same boat. Most experts doubtful a deal gets done for the NFL. Could be a weird 2011-12 if everything happens.

I think they should cut Stern's salary by two thirds. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Professional sports, not unlike most other facets of life, is cyclical.  The growing disparity, socioeconomically speaking, between those who entertain and those who pay to watch them, was, and is on a collision course for change.  History is being written

A Hard cap is good for the NBA as a business.
Running in the red isn't sustainable and 57% of costs go to the players.
This is a bad situation and It can't be maintained.
The high paid players need to realize that they are ruining the game by being in love with money.
No one remembers the large contract you signed, but people do remember the championships you won.
It is a case of mistaken priorities. 23 to 80 million dollar contracts for 2 to 5 yr deals is completely ridiculous.
It is an over estimate of the worth of players. It is, my humble opinion, that these entertainers make to much money and a drastic cut in their salaries is needed. Seriously, they just play a game for people to be entertained, they are not trying to save the world. They are not public school teachers or doctors/nurses or social workers.
The players union should realize that the people they represent aren't mine workers struggling to make ends meet, or service workers slaving for a inhuman wage, but the elite of our societies.
Derrick fisher, as the acting president, should get his union members to face the reality of this economy and get a consensus on the level of spoiled they will accept.
I think the government and the league should set a base salary for the players in the league and if the TEAM achieves a playoff place, then a bonus is given to the whole TEAM, and if you win the championship, then you get another bonus. This is true capitalism, with a real incentive for TEAMS  to win, not just individuals to cash in. I know this is never going to happen - I'm not stupid!! But it would be a more interesting NBA.

Like I've stated on this board, we are headed for a stoppage of play...a much needed stoppage to restore the integrity of the game.  Players should play for the love of the game, NOT the love of the green.  Money should be secondary.

One thing that the league should put in the  CBA is the possibility of a full non-guaranteed contract.

If a lockout happens, it is just SELFISH on both sides. What happens to all the employees (other than millionaires) if they are out of work  ?

Miss me with millionaires arguing over $ in a recession. It's :(

With Oberto , this team is ready to roll next week !  Sorry Pendergraph and Mills, good luck .

10% unemployment and the unions want more money. The Lady down the street charges me 5 dollars for my coffee every Monday she knows that I would stop buying it if she charged much more than that. Sport franchise's are starting to realize that now. Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tampa Bay Ray's are 2 teams that are cutting or going to have to cut their teams wages or get other players to take less pay. The players and the unions have to realize that they are just a chocolate bar in the grocery store of life, nice to have but we dam sure dont need it.

Honestly cutting contracts to players that SIGNED for X-amount under this CBA shouldn't be cut. I mean it's under a guaranteed CONTRACT. Legally it can't be done..or shouldn't. Hard-cap should definitely be put in place. But then again I'm a nursing student not a business or econ major.

Unless in the current CBA it states that contracts extending into the new CBA can be restructured to conform to the newest CBA, which I think it may because look at all the crazy contracts lately in a economic time where supposedly the owners are losing money. And I don't think a hard cap would be a good idea.

Hmm, I see your point with the contracts... as a player that's an uneasy feeling.

The LA Lakers for the next 3 years will have over $90 million dollars in player salaries and Miami Heat in a few years will have over $70 million between 3 players. From an owners standpoint (talking about the owners in smaller markets) I can see why they want a hard cap. As it stands now it looks like you have to buy a championship, and not every team in the NBA can do that.

well if they decide to pay NBA players less, i feel as if they would have to do so with all other professional sports.
Just my opinion though, like lower the country's debt a bit. hah.

Hopefully we can just get into the top 3 then we can keep wont have to trade Wes for him.
