    From yahoo:
The Players Association plans to contest the NBA’s efforts to curb player complaints about the league’s officiating, union executive director Billy Hunter said Thursday...

The NBA said the league’s market research shows fans want to see a decrease in the on-court complaints and demonstrations by players. The NBA has instructed the league’s referees to give players technical fouls for lingering too long to complain or making an overt gesture, including punching the air.

Who in the world did the NBA do their market research on? They must have only done it in LA and Boston. I'm sick of refs like Joey Crawford or Joe DeRosa making terrible calls. Yes I want to see a decrease in on-court complaints by the players, but that would naturally happen when the stupid officials are competently doing their job and calling a fair game, not giving out star treatment! Giving Wes Matthews a T for clapping does not enhance the game for me.

Bottom line to NBA and David Stern, I would like to watch the players play, and compete fairly. I do not want to watch you call touch fouls on certain players and not on others, I do not want to watch non-stars get mauled by stars and get no call, I don't want to watch bigger market teams shoot twice as many free throws as our team and I ABSOLUTELY do not pay money to come out to watch the refs!! Clean up your officiating, don't just cover up the root of the problem by calling T's on players to cover up your mistakes or agenda!!

Here is Garnett getting t'd up twice for nothing today. Now I hate Garnett, but this is absolutely ridiculous, and it's gonna happen here to us if the league keeps this up. I really think this is ruining the game. The best part about this is at the end the Celtics broadcaster yells "NBA... IT'S STUPID!
ha ha ha it's funny cuz it's truuuee!

As far as the market research, do you guys agree with this new rule?

I personally, couldn't disagree MORE with what Stern is implementing this year.  IMO, the players, as a whole, don't care ENOUGH already!  Now, you are going to penalize the ones that actually care whether or not their team wins or loses?  As I've said before on our site, my biggest pet peev, without question, is the average NBA player who knows he's getting paid whether he sweats or not...whether he cares or not...the average player who is just all about the money and could care less about the preservation of the integrity and beauty of the game.  C'mon David.  Fans are seeing this for what it is.  In the end, you are only hurting your product.

Provide monetary incentives for wins/losses, especially with regard to rivalries.  THEN you'll see entertainment sir.  Use money as the mule, to help lead us back onto the path that we have so blindly wandered astray from.  Naismith has undoubtedly rolled over in his grave so many times he's probably topside by now.

TomL...I personally would pay to see a pay-per-view event featuring the head of the players union...going one on one, with David Stern.  No refs.  Winner keeps his job

i don't see what our big opposition with this rule is. we actually should welcome the rule change.

see, this means Kobe Bryant will receive his first and second technical fouls probably by mid way though the second quarter in every game. this is truly a blessi ... oh crap ... i knew i wasn't going to be able to write that with a straight face!

look, we all know that certain players (i.e.Bryant) aren't going to have to abide by this rule. there are players who have been in the league who've been babied by David Stern and the officials for their entire careers. seriously, when is it going to stop? i don't watch the blazers/nba to see the offiials ensure the outcome of a game. if i wanted to see pre-determined outcomes of athletic contests, i'd watch pro wrestling.

my dad once told me that if Karl Malone was called for all the elbows he threw just in his rookie season, he would have fouled out of enough games that his team would have released him in futility, thus pretty much ending his career.

the point is, great players should be great because they're great; not because the commissioner wan to help them become great.

it's truly gotten so bad that in a few short years, i can forsee a halftime show no longer featuring interviews and sideline reports, but a halftime show showing that day's clip of Stern counting money, because screw the integrity and the spirit of fair competition, money is all David Stern gives a rat's butt about.

Top down decision and the players, fans, and refs are going to have more animosity towards one another because it is basically not fair. Everyone knows NBA calls are largely subjective INTERPRETATIONS of an action. Translation- not so Objective (every listen to van gundy and the other two talking heads call a game), Now a player's ability to stay on the floor just given another pitfall to navigate all in the name of "stopping player complaints." This seems to translate to the players as 'just shut your mouth and entertain us you have no appeal.' No wonder Rudy hates the NBA, it is an unjust place ran by the demagogue Stern. Coaches can't complain = fine. Players can't complain = fine. If the NBA was fair we would see Stern start fining Ref's for missing calls or getting calls wrong. Or for ejecting players who were just showing some SELF EXPRESSION, WHICH IS GOOD FOR THE GAME. I love the battle and the cussing between all the people on the floor. We love to watch the beauty of the game and it's confined violence. I'm glad the Players union is taking this step. I'm sick of Sterns little face and his smug attitude - the dude probably doesn't even like Basketball!!!! Anyway, my point is where is the fairness? If you fine and eject players based on a SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETATION OF ACTIONS, THE LEAGUE SHOULD FINE AND EJECT REFS BASED ON OBJECTIVE INSTANT REPLAY. FAIRNESS IS ALL I ASK.

Here is another article on yahoo.
Like the refs didn't have a hard enough time calling the game correctly without having to watch for this crap as well.
Here is yet another example of the biggest market team (Lakers) getting a gift from the league! Matt Barnes yanks Carl Landry's arm and could have seriously injured him on their way out of bounds. Not only was Matt Barnes not called for a flagrant foul, but Landry was called for a foul!! Were none the refs even watching to make the correct call or I guess it's just business as usual. To me this should be looked at with an intent to injure or hurt, just like attempting to throw a punch or an elbow. I guarantee nothing will be done to Barnes by the league for this dangerous play. And of course it was in the Lakers favor as well and surprise surprise, it was a close game and guess who won? If they did market research on me I'd tell them this is what really pisses me off! On two levels! First, I'm tired of dirty plays like this going unpunished by the league, especially when it is a star player or a player on a bigger market team. Like I said, it was pretty obvious Matt Barnes committed the foul in the first place, and yet they called it on Landry. I'm surprised Landry didn't get a T for asking "what!? On me?" Second, here we go again with the Lakers getting the benefit of being the biggest market team. Interesting how they lost both games against international teams when there was international refs involved, and the first NBA game they play they win a close one.

The last thing this league needs is another means of the refs taking over a game through an interpretation of a rule. This is going to be like any other violation...it's going to be different towards the star players compared to the joe blows.

I hope they change these new rules -definintely do not think they help the game and I just don't see them calling them consistently and never on the stars like Kobe and Wade! But Stern hates to back down so we are probally stuck with them...

This is so dumb! Good basketball is all about players who play with passion, who do everything they can to win. Passion is why I became a fan of basketball, and passion is fighting for what you believe in (players arguing with the refs). To me David Stern and his group of people wanted this message to come out of this new rule: "players, good and bad players, simmer down your passion, we prefer a slower, less intense game of basketball."

THIS NEW RULE IS RIDICULOUS! And to be honest I do not believe it will last very long.

I agree, it definitely will cut out a lot of passion. I don't want to watch zombies play. I do however hate it when a player will not get back on d while the other team is scoring because he is still at the wrong basket whining to the ref! I saw Brandon do that last year once or twice and I was so angry I almost broke my tv. Or if a player is going to whine and complain all game long EVEN after a foul is called (like Kobe) I hate that too, give them a T.
But if a player is occasionally yelling "Come on! And ONE!!" as he is running back on D I don't have a problem with that. Or if they are clapping, laughing or smiling, who cares? That is where this new rule gets totally ridiculous and downright stupid.

Like I said, Stern is trying to cover up the poor officiating by blaming it on the players. That is idiotic!
