so here we are, a little over half way through the pre-season, and i thought i'd through this out there. what were/are your expectations for these seven games? what do you think should be/are the coaches' priorities when it comes to planning and executing through the pre-season? and finally, do you think your expectations and the team's priorities have fell short of, been met or exceeded thus far?

We look small out there K
I'm not looking forward to seeing Luke Babbitt playing way out of position, and bangin' in the paint against other teams bigs, who are playing real hard because they're just trying to make the team. That's a good way to get another Blazer hurt, when you're -80lbs on the guy you're playing against.

Nice topic for discussion.  Seems to be pretty hot around the "water cooler" as well.  For me personally, I am very disappointed thus far.  I feel that just as we've seen the adjustment being made defensively, which most (myself included) would agree was a necessity...we should have also seen a much needed adjustment made OFFENSIVELY.  Not only have I not seen an adjustment made, I would even go out on a precarious limb and say it's WORSE.  Now, instead of the standing around in ISO waiting for #7 to create...it seems that there is alot of standing around waiting for #7 (or whomever) to take a jumpshot.  Surprises?  Rudy's performance and his consistency thus far, and Roy avoiding the paint like the plague.  The later of which can be explained away simply as not wanting to "unecessarily" risk injury during meaningless pre-season (let's hope that is the reason).  If that's not the reason, we are all in for a long season.  I posted my fears regarding a possible situation such as this in an earlier thread discussing Roy's new body.  Wins and losses don't mean that much to me in pre-season.  The lack of a significant change in the offense is why I was (and still am) against the addition of Bickerstaff.  To me, it seemed as though he was added like a friend, an old acquaintance that wouldn't challenge anything, and serve as a "yes man".  This remains one of my biggest fears as it would suggest that changes offensively may not even be a remote consideration.

In summation...disappointed at the continuing ineptitude offensively and what would appear to be the utter refusal to acknowledge the need for change.

I don't place expectations on the pre-season other than I expect them to work through their mistakes and learn from them. This is a great opportunity for the players that we will never see on the court to maybe make another NBA roster. We all know Miami has bench spots open. I am disappointed that they blew the Clippers up and then fell the next three in a row, but that isn't based on my overall expectations just at the range of play. I will start shaking my head if this continues 10 games into the season.

Oh no! I have to say something before a certain someone swoops in here and tells me to punch you in the face! It's throw not though! ha ha ha

Anyway, the biggest thing for me so far is our coach. He hasn't shown any change whatsoever on offense. He is emphasizing defense which is great, but you have to be able to score to take advantage of turnovers and playing better d!! It is frustrating that we can not beat the Jazz for how many games in a row now? Even if it is preseason. I am really disappointed in Nate, but not surprised because he's been this way the whole time. And then it trickles down from there. Somehow he always says he wants the team to run more but they never do. Brandon is being lazy shooting jumpers again, so is Lamarcus, and he is not rebounding as usual. Either Nate is not getting through to them or they are not listening. Either way that is bad. There only seems to be one guy on our team that has the desire to win, and the hatred of losing. He is the only guy driving in and drawing fouls and shooting free throws. Wesley Matthews. He is the only spark I see so far, and that's not going to be enough during the regular season, it's not even enough during the pre season. Lamarcus scored some points yesterday, but he only had FOUR rebounds.

Basically my expectations were to see Nate at least try something new, and Brandon get back to driving and mixing it up more and just motivated to dominate, and Lamarcus actually trying to rebound more. None of these things have happened and I know it's only a few games, but it does not look good. Nic still seems confused, Bayless seems confused, and these are all problems derived from our coach. All of them. Yank Brandon if he is gonna play like a spot up shooter, walk up the court and not play D. Yank Lamarcus if he doesn't go after the boards. This is getting frustrating, because we could even start winning some games and everyone will forget about all this, until the playoffs and we get eliminated in the first round again because of Nate.

    Good questions Kassandra.
Expectations, everyone has them, and they can be realistic or unrealistic. As a fan I expect this "media and fan board" hyped team to look better offensively - really, to look better all around. To try going into the paint and rebound and score more, to be like dogs in there. In these seven games I would like to see this hyped up team live up to their potential. As A fan I always want my favorite team to win even if it is preseason so I can see progress toward flipping that crown up outside the rose garden - I expect to see this core show some toughness and pride and go after it at all times, I want see the lack of fear of injury, where waiting for the right time to turn it on isn't a thought in this teams head. W.M. seems to get this mindset - that is probably because he is new to the team and want's to justify that large contract - but LA and ROY have larger contracts and they have been playing together longer, which leads to my expectations being pretty high for them.
This seven game period of "meaningless games" I expected to see something to have pride in and I have seen my fears realized - this team will have trouble scoring the ball, and they are to small. Small because they play small even if they have some seven footers. Nate can be the defensive coach on team USA and not lose one game, but this isn't team USA stacked with scorers like Durant. This leads me to the grand point - WE SHOULD HAVE IN THE OFFSEASON TRADED FOR A PROVEN SCORER TO HAVE CONFIDENCE IN GOING INTO THE SEASON. This preseason I have seen what I hated in this team last year - JUMP SHOTS SEEMINGLY THE ONLY OFFENSIVE CHOICE AND NO STRONG SCORING PRESENCE IN THE PAINT.

The coaches should seek to try to limit their starters P.T.  IF THEY SEEM TO BE WORKING WELL TOGETHER AND HAVE THEIR GAME TIGHT - WHICH THEY SHOULD. If they do, let the second unit get tight. Nate can try different combo's, but basically I think Nate should run the whole thing like it counts. I think this allows for team cohesion going into the season. I also think it solidifies in the minds of the team what they can expect and what is expected of them. But all this to say - It is do or die for Nate this year!!!! If he doesn't get this core out of the first round this yr. I think we need to question his Philosophy working with this team.

1-3 record so far = falling short!!! I think we will loose to golden state too because that team can score and we have a hard time beating them by actually putting more points on the board than them. If we lose both games and the last one to Denver (which is a good possibility) we would have only beat the Clippers and I don't think we can spin that showing into "JUST PRESEASON"  even though it is !!!! I think that might mean we have a problem. One that can only be answered by a trade for another scorer.

Priorties- Stay healthy, improve chemistry, get a look at the young players, play hard, and a different offensive scheme

So far, I've been disappointed about Batum not getting involved more often. This is a player we're supposedly turning down the #4 pick for and he's not being included enough. That has to stop. Now.

The young players are getting a look, but I'm not thrilled with what I've heard from the radio and seen on the highlights, and viewed in the box scores. Elliot and Armon can't shoot at all. The one bright spot has been Babbitt who scored 18 in our loss at Denver.

I have enjoyed hearing how well our bench unit is playing. Dante, Wesley, Rudy, and Jerryd have really answered the bell this pre-season and are playing like they want it.I've said it before and I'll say it again, our bench is good for an additional 5 wins this year.

I'm a little concerned we keep getting out hustled and out rebounded. I know we're short on depth up front but we still have guys who can board. Barkley led the league in rebounding at 6-4, all it takes is determination, scouting, and will.

I didn't expect much from Camby and Dre as they'll go through the motions this pre-season, because they need to save their bodies, but I am a little worried Dre and Brandon haven't clicked more.

As I listen to Wheels on the radio, I'm hearing a lot of quick jump shots.  I don't see the reason for this, pre-season or not.  The pre-season's purpose is to find ways to win, not just get bench players lots of minutes.  While it is good to experiment with the rotations, I feel the Blazers are missing the point.  Brandon is not taking the games seriously, and this is what separates him Kobe.  In the 2008 all star game, Kobe told Brandon to go hard and try to win every game, even the All Star Game.  To me, it doesn't seem like Brandon is heeding those wise words, which is a cause for concern.  That'd better radically change come October 26.

On the plus side, Wes Matthews is playing like an all star!  YES!!!

Ya but, Kobe's a nutcase that assaulted a gal in Colorado and got thrown in the slammer. (The charges were dropped pending a Civil suit). Not to mention starting fist fights with Reggie Miller and Chris Childs (for which he did not fair to well in either scuffle). Never the less, Kobe might be good at basketball, but that doesn't mean he should be Brandon's lead advisor.

If I was Brandon and had to choose a lead advisor to my game I'd pick the best player in my position...that's Kobe, hands down enough said.

Side note: I believe the Lakers lost their 2 games overseas with Kobe going 1 for 6 and no FGs made on one of the two contests.

Back to the topic. Priorities from here on out, start running actual offensive sets, increase minutes of starters slowly, start playing real rotations and stay healthy.

so we need someone outside of the coaches and teammates to 'advise' Brandon? why? why would it have to be someone who plays his position? why would we want someone like Bryant advising Brandon to whine and complain at every call against him? why couldn't the 'adviser' (if he really needed one) be someone like Michael Jordan; Bill Russell or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar?

we need to keep in mind who we're talking about here. Brandon is the centerpiece of a team which has transformed from nearly a disgrace into a perennial playoff team. he doesn't need advice from anyone but his coaches and the personnel who are paid to advise him.

It was a rhetorical remark. I don't think Brandon needs an advisor at this level. But he was the one who did ask Kobe first "how are you going to approach the game (all-star)?"

So all that aside, start running actual offensive sets new and old, increase minutes of the starters, play real rotations and stay healthy.
