That was an attention grabbing title, was it?  But no, I didn't try to "RickRoll" any of you guys.  That title is related to what I have to say.
So no, I didn't watch the game, and I only got the stats from the Clippers and Blazers pre-season game.
Some of you may know where I'm going with this, and some of you don't.
Dang... Just how good is Matthews?  I just want to say this, IF Matthews ever starts OVER Roy, while I'd be happy for him... it just wouldn't be right.  Roy is our leader, and if he becomes "dethroned" all of a sudden by Matthews... I'd be kinda scared.
So the point of this post... Why is Roy better than Matthews?  What makes Roy better than Matthews?  What makes Matthews better than Roy?  At this point, I don't even really know.  For all I know, I could be talking too soon, which might be the case.
If your answer includes the word "clutch", I won't get mad, but who knows what Matthews can do?

Roy is much more of a threat. He has WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more offensive moves than Wesley Matthews. Here's the thing Roy will still get 20 points 5 boards and 5 assists being the focal point of the other teams defense. Wesley on the other hand can't do that. He's a perfect fit for our team and Matthews will get his but he's in no way close to Brandon's level. Saying Matthews is even close to Roy's level is saying that Matthews should be in the conversation for top 3 SGs which include Brandon, KOBE and D-WADE (in no order).

The order strictly from a championship standpoint has to be Kobe, Wade. Then Roy, Ginobli is still a threat. Matthews definitely gets mention just on the strength that he can guard aforementioned, and still get his. Fearless cat. Roy is a lot more savvy, and certainly more poised. No, i think Wesley will do better coming off the bench. As horrible as bench may sound, Ginobli, Jamal Crawford, Jason Terry, Nate Robinson, make their living coming in with that infectious energy that turn games around.

Thanks guys.  Hearing that just calmed me.  But still, @Bertram, would you think it's ever possible to have Matthews be top ten shooting guard if given the chance?  I mean, he has a pretty nice work ethic, and it could get him far.  Scares me.  Just glad he's on our side now.

Hops27, i know the question was for Bertram, but if i may, i think he is already. I mmean who else is there at the two guard.
Kobe, Wade, Roy, Matthews, Ginobli, J. Richardson, Who by the way we have someone to guard  him this year. Who else?

No, Wesley is not going to start over Roy. Few reasons: 1) Roy is better, more experienced, more versatile offensively 2) Roy is our franchise player 3) Roy is the leader of the team 4) Battling Wesley every day, and having Wesley chasing him, is going to make Brandon Roy even BETTER!

I am in love with Matthews' game, and have some concern about how his explosiveness and maturity is going to affect things overall for the team. I have wondered a time or two if he just might challenge Roy for the starting spot. But I just can't see it, not at this point. A few years down the line? Maybe. Honestly, I think Batum is in more danger of losing time to Wesley than Brandon is.

6th Man of the Year? ABSOLUTELY.....Wesley is going to make our bench among the very best in the league, probably the best once the bigs are back :)

Oh, and Manu is NOT better than Brandon. IMO, the top three SGs in the league stand alone at this point - Wade, Kobe, Roy (in that order). The next guys can challenge those guys here and there, or with parts of their game, but overall? No way.

I could see this forcing Roy to play Point guard a lot more when Andre isn't in the game. But early on I think we'll see Andre, Roy, Mathews, Batum, and Aldridge on the floor at times until we get some centers back.

The what I see happening in
    Andre/bayless
    Roy/Rudy
    Mathews/Batum
    LA/Camby
    Oden/Joel

I would like to add however...That if we start to drop off Rudy like planned then we will have a three way rotation between Roy/Mathews/Batum.

No, I don't want Wesley to start. We brought him in to bolster our bench which hasn't been excellent since the 2000 squad. He along with Bayless provides a great 1-2 punch in the backcourt. I have no problems with him finishing games, but we need his to use his talents off the bench to start off games so we don't lose control of the games once the starters exit for an early breather.

I'm with DHawes on this one... while I think there's a possibility that Wes Matthews takes a shot at Nick Batum's starting job, I think people undervalue the importance of a solid second unit.

Case in point: Lamar Odom, who few would argue would be a starting forward on many teams in the league.  Manu Ginobili, same deal.  Keeping the pressure on while resting your starters is part of a long-established winning formula.  And Wes Matthews fits into that equation as well as anybody.

That said, it truly wouldn't surprise me to see him start a handful of games for matchup purposes, either.

But no, he won't be starting over Brandon Roy.  Take that one to the bank.

He might start over Batum, but I don't see that happening. Having him as our solid 6th man is perfect for him and something this team needs. It looked like Bayless, Fernandez and Matthews worked well and changes the tempo, Add JP, DC and Oden down the road that's a beastly second unit.

@Ripcitydownunder08: I didn't intend this to be a debate.  Instead, I guess I was really just trying to point out the fact at how scary good Matthews is.  Yes, I understand that we have only seen a Fan Fest game, and a pre-season game.  I also understand that Roy might not be killing because he's just taking it easy.  And I really hope that's the case.
@commontongue: Glad to hear you think he's top ten.  I'm really excited to have him on our team.  We'll just have to see what Kelly Dwyer says at the end of the season, huh?

I think I like Batum's length over Wes for starting sf, plus Wes coming off the bench seems better than Batum coming off the bench. I like that Batum doesn't take anything away from Lamarcus, Brandon or any of our starters for that matter, offensively, and yet when called upon he can still score. I think Wesley just makes our bench 10 times better than last year. He seems like an energy guy kinda like Ginobili. And after only one preseason game I am not even considering Wesley starting over Brandon. I don't care after every pre season game either! If Brandon all of a sudden falls off his game this year then maybe, but I am not worried about him right now. Wes just has a lot to prove to everyone claiming he is overpaid and he is very excited obviously. But hopefully it will light a fire under Roy and get him going.

Lol, Matthews won't EVER start over Roy lol.
Don't get me wrong, the kids a beast, and most teams would use him as a starter, but not if they had Roy.
IMO though, Matthews was the missing peice to the championship (Given we can keep G.O. & Camby healthy)
Matthews is  going to solidify our bench and bring some real energy come the regular season & the playoffs.
With our lockdown perimeter defenders, Roy & Miller running our offense, LA banging bodies down low along side Greg Oden...Man oh man, I think the Blazers are going to give us one hell of a season!! There should be no reason we can't hang with the rest of the big boys, the Celtics, Lakers, Magic, Heat. LETS GET IT!

Hopman to answer your question, I already think by the time the seasons over with he is going to be a top 10 shooting guard in the league. If he can attack the basket effectively, lock down people and shoot the rock from behind the arc with atleast a .385% then he's right there. 6th man of the year candidate.

As far as him starting for us period...he's shown he's a starter in the league, but in this league you don't really have to start to be a star, look at Jamaal Crawford and Manu Ginobili. They are starter quality players but sacrifice a little playing time for extremely effective per 48 minute stats.

Henson will be solid down the road but his ceiling is more like Taj Gibson. He is a great role player but not elite like Sanders and Ibaka could be if people were not so willing to shoot on him.
