ISTANBUL -- The secretary general of FIBA, the governing body of international basketball, would like to see the NBA change its goaltending rules to allow players to knock the ball off the rim.

The official, Patrick Baumann, made the comment during a lunch meeting with eight selected American and European journalists Thursday before the final two quarterfinal games at the FIBA World Championship.

FIBA rules allow players to knock the ball off the rim after it touches the cylinder, whereas in the NBA that would constitute a goaltending violation...

I personally have mixed emotions over the idea of goaltending being changed.

Pros: Easier to call, more aggressive in the post, free throw misses more up for grabs. (just for a few)

Cons: Bigs would have easier times (offense or defense) just clearing the ball away over small players, more aggressive in the paint (more injuries... no thank you), controversial methods of abusing this rule. (there are plenty more trust me)

Just wanting to add anybody worried about a buzzer beater being influenced, in FIBA buzzer sounds ball is dead that means no offensive or defensive players can go to influence the shot so buzzer shots are make or miss no changes.

People, myself included, already complain the scoring is down too much from the 80's/early 90's, and this would wipe away so many points. Think of how many times a guy like Dwight Howard would knock it off the rim. I personally think the way they do it in FIBA is cheap. If the ball's on the rim, leave it alone. Keep the rule the way it is.

For the most part I agree with you guys about keeping the rule the same but a little voice inside me keeps reminding me how many "bogus" goaltending calls have gone against Portland, both offensive and defensive, because of this magical cylinder.

okay this is a little biased and could be construde as racism but its not intended to be so.

in international play there are very few players that can everytime the ball is on the rim.. knock it off.
there are a few of them.... but not nearly as many as there are in the NBA.
you could count probally 2 or 3 on every team in the NBA that have quick jumpers or bigs that can knock balls off the rim if its hanging there.

international play isnt that way... maybe in international play there are... 2-3 in the entire league.
its fine for international play but for the NBA? where the international players come to play. where the best basketball players are...(for the most part)  it wouldn't work. everytime the ball hung on the rim. it WOULD be knocked off.

the announcers for the US game said it themselfs.

That is ridiculous. There are plenty of guys who are tall enough or can jump high enough to knock the ball off the rim in FIBA, not just 2 or 3 players. There are actually a lot of NBA players in FIBA now, they are just more spread out and not all on one team like team USA.
Also when they talk about FIBA refs not being used to athleticism they are referring to the quickness of the NBA player, in particular all the bad travel calls on them, not that no one can jump high enough to touch the rim in FIBA but 3 players. That is stupid.
I don't think your comment is racist, don't know why someone would think that, but I do think it is ignorant.

As far as knocking the ball off the rim in the NBA, I wouldn't care either way. It is still as entertaining to me either way I watch it. But you guys talk like it would lower the scoring of games... remember offensive players can tip the ball in off the rim as well so that would offset each other I think. I think the scoring would be the same, and it would be just as fun to watch.

The one thing I wish the NBA would change to be more like FIBA is letting them be more physical. That is one huge aspect I really like about watching FIBA, whereas in the NBA I get so sick and tired of them calling fouls on people who breath on someone that absolutely does not effect the shot and it ruins the flow of the game... actually that seems to lower the scoring too, it prevents fast breaks and lets the defense get set up before they inbound the ball after every call. FIBA was actually much more fun to watch because there were bad calls, but for everyone and they didn't play favorites to the "stars" for the sake of them being "stars" they just called fouls. Sometimes the calls were inconsistent, but they would always be inconsistent for each side and for every one. Just think of Oden in FIBA, he would be a beast!

Also congratulations to Team USA for winning the Gold today!!!

I too would love to see more physicality the problem is the owners don't want to see their multi-million dollar investments get hurt and pay them for nothing so we will never see that day

Well I'm talking about letting them play, not letting them get away with flagrant fouls. The NBA used to be much more physical and it didn't seem like players got hurt any more then than now. Now it is like watching touch football.

No I understand what you meant and you are probably right, I guess I'm just venting my dislike of the current NBA game, which mostly includes bad, arrogant officiating, star treatment and touch fouls which all RUIN the flow of a game. Last year really seemed to be bad for defensively aggressive centers, like Dwight Howard and Greg Oden when he was healthy. But if they really cared about the players they need to quit doing the star treatment and suspend players when someone obviously tries to elbow, hit or punch someone in the face or wherever, even if they miss... like what Amar'e got away with against Lamarcus. That was total bs. Then he intentionally elbowed Batum in the injured shoulder and the NBA said it was inadvertent. More bs. They must think we are really stupid. Those kind of cheap shots would do a whole lot more damage than being physical in a game if they connected and they should be thrown out of the game and/or suspended.

Since they let that crap slide I see them as not allowing physicality to benefit their star players with touch fouls on the opposition instead of protecting all players from injuries.

yeah I lost what little respect i had for NBA refs at the last game vs Dallas... I replayed Barea missing the floor and a foul being called when the closest person was like 2 feet away... IIRC that was also a game where a blazer "fouled"  a Mav at the 3 pt line from the key somehow... Might be a different game but i remember it happened late last season

and i think you're ignorant for taking 2-3 players as the only in the entire league. no duh i was being a little exxaggerrating figured someone could figure that out.
my point was... there are far more players on every team in the nba from the nets to the lakers that can knock the balls off the rim should it hang.
in international play? watching fiba for a couple years now.. i see it more from the states than i do anyother country.
(yes.. i watch other countrys too................)
far as the traveling? lol.. i watched westbrook/andre many times out jump the opponet that was boxing them out to get the board. only to be called for over the back when they jumped. STRAIGHT up. so dont give me "only travelling period"  *eye roll*

Calm down Brandon he never said you were ignorant and everybody gets angry once in a while but all in all i think TomL has some good insight and seeing how we differ on some opinions i see him as great person to debate with, just cuz he doesn't agree with what your saying doesn't justify your retaliation.  Also when you exaggerate it sets you up for flaming and use general terms like "athleticism" you need to name specifics because that covers a huge area of the game and the #1 thing I heard FIBA refs have had trouble with from several sources has been the quickness that most NBA players possess.

You're right, sometimes I do start arguments, but I have to defend myself a lot too when I didn't start anything, so I guess I get carried away. I do like to discuss things and I admit I am not the most diplomatic nor do I have a lot of patience and people take it the wrong way. I don't mean to always attack that's just the way I talk. It's hard to explain but in person the same words wouldn't sound so bad the way I would say it I guess.

Anyway I still think since "I don't know you" either, it was fair to take you literally when you said 2 or 3 players, because even if you meant barely any one in FIBA could reach the rim that would be incorrect as well. Also I see that over the back call in the NBA all the time with players going straight up, almost as much as in FIBA as well as other non nba players getting the same call, but regardless NBA players get a ton more traveling calls on them in FIBA when in fact they didn't travel and I never saw any other non NBA player get that call in all the games I watched. So yeah I called it like I saw it and said your comment was ignorant because plenty of players in FIBA can reach the rim no matter how mad at me you get but seeing as you watch FIBA I guess that doesn't make you ignorant, just blind! My bad. If you don't like my posts sorry, but you don't have to read them and summarize them.

I love the NBA, I love the rules, I love the players, I love the level of play, the coaching, The offensive schemes and the defensive schemes, I love the commitment the players (usually) have to their teams. I love the playoff's, The NBA is like a drug for me. FIBA Basketball is, yes, basketball, but not quite what I love - it's not the NBA. point is, I like the rules now, the drama of the ball bouncing on the rim, players timing their jumps to rebound or tip it in, man that's good true drama. There's nothing like it. I say keep the rule the same.

One thing would be certain .. Center's would again rule the court more then any other position in the league .. (As it should be)
