    From A Stern Warning:
Just quickly: the whisper on the street is that Patty Mills is in negotiations with the Portland Trail Blazers to secure another contract for the upcoming season. Obviously this would be pending some move made with respect to Rudy Fernandez, but surely something is in the works there (given the hostile situation).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we'd have to create a roster spot for him before actually signing him, because it would push us over to 16 players under contract which is over the exceeded limit of 15. Maybe this means a trade is on the agenda? Who know..what do you think about Patty being on the opening night roster? Is he a good fit? Or is there just too many good guards on our roster?

I agree.  A spot WILL have to be opened up for Mills.  I like having a player on the bench at that PG position that brings a completely different skill set to the table.  Having both AJ and Mills available gives Nate the flexibility coaches dream of.  Thunder AND lightning.

I am a fan of Patty Mills 'the person', and would love to have more of an opportunity to become a fan of Patty Mills 'the Blazer'.

I would like to see Patty Mills back, but that would require a draft pick in return without any actual players being traded back. Most teams already have released the players they are going to release and have full rosters. I feel like Mills wants to have a chance to play here, he appears to be going out of his way to give the Blazers a shot at him, if only Rudy would stop making it impossible to trade him. I wouldn't mind giving Mills another shot at developing as a Blazer. It is still not so cut-dry though on the roster. That still puts us in a position where we have Roy, Miller, Bayless, AJ, Elliot Williams, Matthews, and Mills all at the Guard position. It's still going to be difficult to find minutes for the bottom three players (AJ, Williams, Mills).

I would rather see the Blazers trade Rudy for a pick and leave the 15th spot open. It's hard to tell right now exactly when Greg and Joel will be back - and how they'll be when they're ready. Because of the situation, I would rather have the flexibility to make another move than have Patty here still trying to develop and earn time. My guess is because of Patty's international ball, the Blazers aren't quite ready to give up on him. My question though is, are they ready to play him. I kind of doubt it.

Imo, no Nate is not going to play him.  Same discussion as last summer. They signed him,he sat, Joel went down and the Blazers were in trouble. Joel is questionable, Greg is maybe handicapped, what if some thing happens to Marcus ??  Same song different summer.  Like I said, good grief.

I see this happening and working out for the Blazers, Nate can continue in the traditionalist manner of not playing rookies in a lot of minutes, while rewarding Patty for doing what he's going to be asking E.W. and Armon to be doing this year, which is watching and learning. Replace Rudy with a guy as equally unacreddited to his defensive prowess, and see what he can do. Our own little Nate Robinson off the bench.

    We don't need another PG.
We don't want to fill Rudy's spot with another PG.
    He's not gonna be played.
He's not gonna blossom in this system.

There is no solid reason to bring Patty Mills back here.
WE NEED A PF, NOT ANOTHER PG.

I wanted to hang my head once I heard about these "negotiations," and I wanted to hope that the negotiations were to work out a situation where the team could trade him and someone else for something that'll take us to another level. Nothing against Patty, he could make it in the NBA, but he's not gonna flourish here.

Let patty headline a D-league expansion from Portland, he can play alongside Armon and E.W. and even Babbit at times and get playing time, bring ibekwa and some other summer league players as well. I'd buy tickets to that.

Let Patty go somewhere he will play, and get one more big man on the Blazer bench.  Some coaches  still want small pgs, even though the league is getting bigger at the position. Rondo,Rose, and Westbrook will eat Mills alive.

I feel different this summer about AJ and EW getting minutes. They are imo, Nate type guards.... athletic , good size, play D.  I was the most anti-rookie guards before the draft, but the brain trust has done it again with the rookies this year !!

if we were talking international play I would probably agree with you, but in a league that caters to fast moving point guards, via the no hand check past the free throw line rule, Patty is going to succeed as an offensive punch like Jason Terry with his long distant confidence and speed. If he could limit mistakes and keep improving his ability to push it and stay in front of people he'es defending he could find backup pg minutes and be rewarded for his desire to play for portland.

In international play he looks great. Same with summer league. With the big boys , Mills doesnt even come close to Terrys length. The Blazers need to look past the Lakers.
For rings, its the east in a series.  Chalmers is about to blow up. ( I still would have taken him over JBay in a heart beat )
Mills will always be a liability with his size. Both ends. Thats my story, and I'm sticking to it......

why cant we just play the players we have? on a 15 player roster we want 4 PGs? nate's system is effective but its excruciating that i dont get to see players play enough to develop faith and confidence in their abilities. i'd rather stick with the pgs we have than have a group that never sets foot on a court.

I seem to remember a similar situation a few years ago when we had a jam at the PG and SF spot. Jeff McGinnis and Damon were the two main PG's vying for time but we had four deep. Realistically though, we really don't have 4 true PG's. Again, Bayless is really still an undersized SG until he develops the other parts of his game. We are really 3-4 deep at both guard spots and then crammed at the PF with Aldrige, Camby, Pendergraph, and Cunningham all able to play.

Roy  counts as 1/2 a pg, especially with the addition of Matthews.  Just like Oden counts as 1/2 a center until he proves otherwise.  So to me at this point,  Camby 's minutes will be at center , and I still want to see Dante at the 3.
The Blazers dont need a "true pg" , or a fast liability.

What matters with AJ, EW and JBay, is how they play with Roy.......

The Blazers have the ability to go big or small, run or half court. Anyway you slice it, still no minutes for Mills.

I don't see Nate's offense HAVING the ability to go small WITHOUT Mills running the point.  He is the perfect catalyst for "going small" and a decent compliment to Roy with his ability to can the J and get to the cup.  He IS a probable liability defensively however, unless he is eye to eye with Curry.  He is also a player that generates interest amongst possible future trade partners.

JBay is as small as I am willing to go at pg.   Nothing against Mills or Curry, but how has smallball worked for Nelly so far ?????

I also dont care that JBay is not a " true pg" , what he is labeled is never going to as important as how he plays with Roy. For all the Blazer fans who feel the need to remind me for the millionth time.

Even if JBay is moved, I want equal size in return.

The Blazers dont need Mills to run either,( I think Dre can still do that ) they need to D up. No one can run taking the ball out of the net, regardless of who their pg is..

Over a year later, I'm done with Mills talk. My opinion is not going to change.  We will see what happens.

It doesn't even matter if Patty is on the roster or not;  Nate never plays him, and I think that's a wise decision on his part.  Patty isn't the type of player who fits very well into the NBA (in my opinion).  For his own sake, he should stick to international ball.

How can you say someone doesn't fit in the NBA when they haven't been tried??.. well for more than 20 minutes or so in total!! He plays great international ball and killed them in college ball (yes i realise its a lot different but everyone starts somewhere)... Look at his game at the Olympics against the US...

I'm 100% with you and we may be alone.  This stuff about Patty being only suited to international ball is just an easy cop out.  He excelled at the Olympics, yes.  Might I add that he did so in one particular game against an international team that featured not 1, not 2, not 3 but a full team of NBA players from a little country called the United States of America with all its blue chip "Big Boys".  That same "international specialist" - Patty Mills, however, did not start in the Euroleague system and then cross over to the NBA; he went through the same college system that every other young NBA player goes through and performed well enough to get drafted after a terrible injury ruined his 2nd year, and yes it's not the NBA "big boys", but he showed that he could play in and against teams that model themselves on NBA style and function.  In 2 D-league games he showed that he doesn't belong their so I wont bother referencing it.  Currently at the worlds Patty has performed exceptionally in helping his team progress to the next round, 5 games - 22 assists to 9 turnovers.  His shooting stats have varied, however in games where Australia broke free from their opponents it was largely due to a Patty Mills scoring streak or opening up the court for easy buckets for his team mates.  It is interesting however how its being reported - (latest article by Casey Holdahl) for example, that Nic Batum is performing very well whilst Patty is up and down in the scoring department. In the 5 games to date they are almost line ball in shooting efficiency - BATUM 20/49 F/G overall, MILLS 22/55 F/G overall,BATUM 13/25 2pts overall, MILLS 12/27 2pts overall,  BATUM 7/24 3pt overall, MILLS 10/28 3pt overall, BATUM 17/23 F/T, MILLS 16/19.

My point is that Patty is now being pigeon holed as just a "international", "euroleague" type player and even his very good performances at the current worlds are being glossed over. The only thing preventing him from being successful in the NBA is the team he is currently on is stockpiling  guards.  As a fan of Patty Mills (I think that fact could be obvious), I hope they either cut him or hopefully a deal comes his way.  He's just to good to be wasted on KIM'S 'defensive big man' Blazer team.

If their is a spot for him on the Blazers, then good, if not then so be it. Just cut the 'international speciallist' tag, its just plain rubbish.

It's hard for people to admit the game has changed and a point guard with the shot and speed of Patty is a threat off the bench on ANY team, IN THE NBA. The fact that he can do well in international ball should put his credibility at an even higher value, because he can deal with handchecking and more physical play, and should have no problem's getting to the cup in a "no-hand-check" league. He's gotten better at keeping his feet moving and staying in front of the player he's defending, so he isn't as much of a defensive liability as people like to pretend he is.

If you think he can't make it in the league now, with all the changes that have happened to cater to Point guards, then that's good, it's minds like you (cough...Kim) that keep Patty's stock low enough so that we don't have to have a bidding war over potential, and we can possibly bring him in to training camp as the 15th man.

Imagine if Spud Webb played in todays league?
