L.A gets 17.9 points a game and 8 rebounds. Pau Gasol  (an All-Star) gets 18.3 points and 11rebounds per game. Do you think that L.A will be playing at that level by the end of this season?

he certainly has the potential to do so. i believe LaMarcus means as much to our success as Gasol means to the lakers. just imagine where we would have been last year without him. according to Mike Barrett on his blog, LaMarcus has added 20 pounds of muscle and hired a personal trainer (at his own inclination and cost). he definitely wants to improve to an all-star level.

many think he should have made the team last year as a replacement over the clippers' Chris Kamen.

Gaining three rebounds per game over the course of one off-season is no easy task.  However, I think Aldridge could do it because it's all in his head.  He's a soft power forward, and the only thing he needs to change is his mindset.  He's built the same as Camby, who averages 11 boards a game.  If Aldridge had Camby's mindset, he could average 13 boards a game because of his length and speed.  If he can do this (and not settle for jumpers so often), he will be an all star this season.  This is his opportunity, now that Amare and Boozer are in the Eastern Conference.

@FamousRoy: Like Kassandra said, Aldridge didn't just beef up.  He BEEFED up.  I can't imagine his strength translating to his game right away, but pretty soon, he'll learn how to use it, and he won't be that "soft power forward" anymore.  I hope he still remains that finesse skills he has.

Yes, I think it's safe for us Blazer fans to bet he will be an All-Star next year.

FamousRoy, the main problem with your assessment of LaMarcus' rebounding is that he did not average just three rebounds per game -- he averaged nearly three times that many. LaMarcus averaged 8.0 rebounds per game last season. in fact, he got 2.5 offensive rebounds per game which is evidence that he's not settling for jumpers as often as people accuse him of. i'm not sure where you're getting your stats, but i got mine from nba-dot-com.

his mindset is that he's beefing up, hiring a personal trainer, and committed to taking his game to the next level. if he does, then an all-star nod could be one of the results.

@ Kassandra. FamousRoy didn't say he averaged 3 rbds/game. He said

'GAINING 3 rebounds per game over the course of one off-season..."

which would put him at 11/game. He probably needs to be a double double guy to be an all-star. Again, you didn't read it very well. Geeze!

This is my last straw with Aldridge. I've continued to hold out hope for him to take the next step, yet he stays stuck in the same rut. It's not a bad rut to be stuck in per-say, but he's got so much more potentail then the level he's playing at now. Get the killer instinct LA and dominate these busters in the paint!

He will, once the Blazers have a consistent center all season, and let him play his natural position.
I still think people judge him too much at the center position. Patients frog :)

I think he'll start going inside halfway through this season. He's building up. The willingness is only gonna come with gametime. All-star? I think this year, he will get in. Not by fans of course, but by coaches.

Aldridge has all the tools to be an All-Star. He has had all the tools to be an All-Star and SHOULD have already been one, but he has failed to put himself in the position to be one. Let's hope he can put it all together this year and make it. It should hopefully not be as difficult with Amare and Boozer moving to the Eastern Conference.

I am with ClydeFrog.  My patience is wearing thin with LA.  For all of you commenting on his "beefing up" this offseason...remember, he's done this before.  His upper body has steadily gotten bigger since his rookie season.  That is not where he needs the work.  He needs to increase his core strength, AND his legs.  LaMarcus needs to get lower down on the block.  He plays too upright.  If THIS is what he has been working on, then, YES...I am on board with him becoming an all-star.  I agree that he only has himself to overcome.

and dont forget that boozer and amare are both in the east now so its very possible for aldridge to be an all star and with the diet and work in the post he should become dominate to the majority of 4's

Real talk right there BDawg. Theres a lot of guys in the league built like Captain Planet. Huge on top, with what amounts to a unileg down low. Two things i know for certain that you'll never find in any gym. The first is a chin weight, and second is heart strengtheners. You cant make a guy want to get grimy in the paint. You either have that testicular fortitude, or you dont. No amount of bulking up or talking a good game will suffice. I love LA's game, its smooth, kind of like Sam Perkins, you dig. I dont think of hard hat and lunch pail when i see LA, i think business suit. Maxiel,B.Bass,C.Landry,P.Milsap, even Scola are hard hats and lunch pails that will go get you THE rebound. A power forward is relentless, just the guy you hate to see. Laimbeer, Oakley, somebody stop me

Well said.  IMO, he doesn't have the PERSONALITY, which ISN'T something that can be worked on in the summer months.  Improving his core and leg strength, and learning to get that butt down may be enough to add a new dimension to his game however, silencing his many critics while earning him his first all-star appearance.  We can only hope

    ...and stop you?

well if all goes according to plan. i dont really see LMA being a 20/10 guy. i see his points going up and possibly his rebounds going down simply because... not if this goes to plan.. the Center spot. ala Greg Oden will be gobbling up the rebounds on the defensive bounds and LMA will be able to do what the plan has been all along and use his athleticism to his advantage by. RUNNING THE FLOOR.

personally i would like to see LMA continue to get more comfortable with his back to the basket and be able to create from there. other than just the turn around. would liek to see a drop step or even a hook from the low block. LMA should imo be working on establishing better posistion down low. but that also has to do with the guards getting him the ball quickly and playing inside out.

but like i said. if oden stays healthy LMA will not be a 20/10. maybe a 23-25/6-8boards.
is that enough for an allstar? dont know. i personally think Jefferson will get the nod to the allstar game this year.

He doesn't have the mindset to be an all star. Core strength is not the magic bullet, working out and getting stronger are part of it, but it's really in the mental disposition of a player to take his game to the next level. Some players have this disposition -i.e. Roy, Kobe, Nash, Paul, Durant, KG, Pierce, etc, you can see it in their attitude, the way they go after all of it in games, they don't settle. I feel LA is a player who settles A LOT OF THE TIME. He has been likened to Rasheed wallace. the constant knock on Wallace was that he settled for the easier task and didn't realize his true post potential, If that criticism is right or wrong I don't know, but it does mean that the comparison speaks something of a negative towards LA.
I think LA is Good and I have defended him and his place on the team and I like what he brings, but He isn't that killer like Roy. AS a thought experiment think about who should have the ball in their hands with the game on the line, Roy or LA, if you can't say you feel good about either taking the final shot, then LA isn't an all star in my opinion. ( I know players make the Allstar team on defensive contribution and rebounding, but LA is not going to make it on these things we all know deep in hearts). LA will will have to make the team because of his offense and I don't see it. He just doesn't have the next gear and he plays in Portland, if you play in Portland you MUST HAVE THE NEXT GEAR TO GET NOTICED BY THE LEAGUE.
