Just How Good Is Bayless?

I am of the opinion that Bayless is overrated.  He is starting to remind me of Travis Outlaw, the reason we didn't beat the Rockets in the 2009 playoffs.  Bayless thinks he has a great jumper.  He does not.  The shot has no arc, and he often bricks it.  I don't mind it when he shoots open threes, but I doubt his ability to knock down a self-created shot.  He also can't pass.  He's not a point guard, and he's not a very good shooting guard.

If Nate lets Brandon take it up regularly and Bayless can fit in the two spot, not settle for jumpers, and keep attacking the basket, Bayless would be a valuable role player for the Blazers for years to come.  If Bayless remains an arrogant ballhog, he would be a nice part of a trade for a solid point guard once Andre's done.

We will see what Bayless is made of in training camp/preseason. I like his fire, but  EW and AJ may match it.  As sick as I am of pg musical chairs and the great quest for the pgotf, I really want to see both rookies before my decison on who stays is made.

Travis was not the only reason for the Houston series loss. Travis won games with that jumper too. I dont see any similarity in Bayless and Travis.  Opposite  personalities and approach to working out. Bayless is quick on the defensive end, something no one ever accused Travis of.
Sometimes shots fall, sometimes they dont. Neithers were as flat at Chachos were.

You're right about Bayless being better than Travis on the defensive end, and how they're different personalities.  The only similarity I'm trying to point out is how they both fall in love with their jump shot, when they're both very good at getting to the basket.

Outlaw was far from the only reason we lost the Houston series. It was a team loss (haha). Really on Roy was the only player who stepped his game up for that series.

Also, how is Bayless an arrogant ballhog? Please provide examples. Just because he's a scoring guard doesn't make him a ballhog and there is a pretty big line between arrogant and confident, which I don't think JB i remotely close to crossing.

I know that Travis wasn't the only reason we lost the Houston series.  Aldridge not guarding Scola was the primary reason in my opinion.  But I believe Travis was a substantial contributing factor to the loss of the series.  He missed a LOT of fadeaway jumpers, and he didn't stop shooting them.  For a guy that can get to the basket at will like him, that was unbelievable to me.

"Ballhog" might be too strong a word for Bayless, but I do think he shoots too much.  It might be because he gets fewer minutes to play than many others on the team, and he wants to prove to Nate during that time that he can play.

When I said that Bayless was arrogant, I meant that he's an arrogant person; not so much an arrogant player.  But hey, most players in the NBA are arrogant, so whatever (haha).  I guess Bayless is just a little too tenacious for me; he gets totally pumped over a layup he gets in a game that doesn't really even matter; then you look at players like Derek Fisher who knock down HUGE shots in critical games and completely keep their cool.  I'm the kind of person who respects that (even though I hate D-Fish).

IDK even know how to respond.  So I guess we'll just wait and see next season, huh?  Hope his improvements make you feel better.  It's nothing on you, just saying that your complaints are a lot of others' as well.  I, personally, just want to see him be a better PG.

I just want to see the Blazers win, and no one player is responsible for that.  Apparently the shooting coach is not a priority next season.  I dont care if they go to the paint or shoot an outside shot, points are points, I want more than the other team every game, however they come.

Let's look at it this way. Look at his shot mechanics his rookie season and compare it to his sophomore year. If you have any bball iq at all you can clearly see the difference of the release and footwork. That's a testament to how he can improve his game. Let's not forget this year will be his senior year of college basketball.

Personally, I love the fact that Bayless brings the energy to the team every night. Someone has to. All elite teams have energy players who are just a ball of fire no matter what they do and I think the team would be served better if they maybe even added another high-energy type of player.

If we could hook Bayless up to an energy capsule and capture his energy, that'd be great. The thing is, he thinks he can do a lotta things that he can't. I applaud his confidence, but it's gonna end up getting his shots blocked. He can be turnover prone. As we've said for a long time, he's the size of a PG, but plays like a SG. He's a combo guard, without actually being one. We need another player that's got his strength and determination to fill that kind of role. He's currently a third-string PG, and frankly, I'm not sure he'll make more than a second-string in his career.
If he can mature (in basketball IQ), he can be a great piece here. Still tradeable, but likable.

I think we have another player with his strengths in EW, who also has more size.  It may just be a matter of inches, but every inch counts on D, and helps not  get your shot blocked.
I love JBays intensity.  Agree 100% that he is both  likable and tradeable. Especially if EW turns out to be the player I think he will be. The guard situation has to be thinned out, I think Rudy will help that. I just wish I was more confident that Nate will show any love to playing rookies, and not run Roy into the ground by February again.

I agree with the need for intensity and players that seem to actually "care" about the outcome of a game.  We also have Pendegraph and DID add another high-energy player, in Wesley Matthews.  If all that Matthews does is what he did last year in Utah, he will quickly become a fan favorite.

B-Rex is a under rated guard on our team. His quickness (second to none in the league mind you) is as fast as Brooks (houston PG) or any other out there ..

His ability to defend smaller quicker PG's combined with the ability to get to the basket nearly at will ..

Very under rated .. B-Rex and Outlaw had absolutely no similarities in their games what so ever .. (my opinion) I think Bayless is a very under rated aspect of Portlands team. As has been said multiple times up above he is in fact an energy guy, and one that can basically create his own shot nearly at will even if only driving to the hoop..
