I've been discussing this with several cousins of mine who are also Portland fans ..

Is Nate hindering or helping Portland ?

What about his refusal to let Frye play ? Lets face it .. Frye always HAD .. the ability to shoot an hit 3pters its not like he went to the Suns an magically he was able to ..

What about his refusal to let B-Rex play ? Is this going to be a repeat of the Channing Frye fiasco ? Are we going to lose a player to another team .. because of our coaches refusal to play him ?

What about Nate's inability to understand in the playoffs ..
It was not Nash who was killing us .. it was Rich .. why did Nate not take Batum off of Nash and place our best defensive player on the single guy who was flatout killing us .. 3 straight games in a row ?

    Or ..

What about Nate taking out the guys who are hot .. multiple times threw out the series .. Nate inexplicably takes out Rudy (who finally started drilling shots) who was the hottest Blazer on the team to place in another player ?

Or how bout when he did that with Bayless ? (several times i might add)

    What say you ?

Is Nate wasting talent (Bayless, Patty, Rudy) ?

Is Nate slow to pick up on defensive assignments ? (Rich killed us 3 straight games, yet he refused to sick Batum on him)

    What say you  ?

Last season I posted some very similar comments on the Hollinger ranking page of ESPN, I was crucified. The statement you made about Nate removing a hot player from the game is right on. Nate sticking to the rotation even if it means taking out a player or team that is really heating up has never made sense to me. Nate is a great teacher but like I posted back then there are great coaches that can win during the season but the playoffs are a whole new game and Nate seems to have trouble adjusting on the fly to a team he sees game after game in a playoff series.

First of all, when it comes to Frye, he is a system player. He is perfect for Phoenix becasue they play that system; I ask you, is Phoenix's style any better as they have been in the playoffs pretty consistently and not gone to the Finals. They are no better off than Portland. If Nate had pulled Batum from Nash, then Nash would have killed us. In reality, the whole team needed to step up on the defensive end which is what Nate is trying to teach. As far as removing a hot player, what you fail to considder is fatigue. Runs take a lot of energy and players like Bayless and Rudy are pretty one or two dimentional. As far as Patty goes, he needs to take advantage of the minutes he gets until he proves himself on the NBA level. Even in extended minutes against Golden State he only proved to be servicable. Agaist the Golden State defense you should be a star. Nate is developing this team, he appears to have a model I appreciate and I think part of the reason Batum has not been traded is due to Coach Nate. Having both Batum and Matthews will allow Portland to match up against a team like Phoenix by sliding Batum to the PF and putting Matthews at the SF. Then you can put Roy and Bayless as the PG and SG. That is a very tenacious defensive team. Nate is still helping this team.

No seriously...I am sick of this type of thinking. Nobody wants to wait and allow players or coaches to develop, he obviously saw his shortcomings in his coaching style or lack there of in certain areas, that's why he hired 2 very experienced Assistants. Nate is one of the best if not the best up and coming coaches. And to that person who brought this up in another thread that I believe i was more successful at ignoring, even if Nate were an average player, that doesn't mean he'll be an average coach... Isaiah was a great player....nuff said.

so who's fault is it when Nate pulls a hot player or lineup and the team goes cold loses a lead? We saw it so many times last year.

Look, I disagree with the thread but it doesn't require that kind of reaction. It is a public thread and a topic to discuss. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and we are all Blazers fans regardless. Let's try and keep the threads civil discussions. Thanks! :-)

As far as fault goes, there are two teams to every game. From a coaches standpoint, you have to try and balance productivity and fatigue. If say Phoenix were to get take out a starter, Portland puts in Rudy and Rudy gets hot. All of a sudden, Phoenix has to put their starter in again to counter Rudy. Their starter is a better defender than their bench player and better offensively. Rudy is a defensive liability. So Nate made the choice to counter with his own substitution. It's all part of the chess match. Noone is to blame because everygame is a new experiment. You know your core, but sub patterns change to counter the opposing team sometimes. It happens. If LA would attack the basket more Portland would be more effective too.

Nate had to make players happy, that's what head coaches do, they lead and micromanage. It's tough when you can only have 5 players on the court at once, but you have so many good players.

He won 50 games with injuries all around, including to himself, where he had to change his coaching style by staying seated and delegating his own role to that of his assistants. Everyone gives Monty credit for Outlaw and Batum, well give Nate credit for Monty.

Year before last every inbound play after a timeout was a work of art for the blazers, and every close game seemed to be ours, last year both were flipped, and he still won 50 games. Yet still you find a reason to complain, that throws civility(is that a word, should be) out the window.

I think lenwen makes some good observations about nate and I also agree Nate knows his short comings and will try to adjust. Life and coaching are a constant adjustment to better outcomes and Nate has the humility and wisdom to know when he has to adjust. I don't see him staying hardhearted in his traits, I think he will notice the dynamic situation coaching presents on a game to game basis and through experience, film, advice and whatever is at his disposal, will get better. I think he wants this and this is why he is a good coach. But damn he take out some hot players at what I judged to be the wrong moment. We still won some of those games where that happened but I still scratched my head.  I was sitting in front of my TV and not on the bench to really know what was going on with the team, so I have to just trust Nate and I do. I think he is a good coach and I wish the best for him.

    My 2 cents.....
Rex didnt play because Chacho had to be Rudys pacifier, and in all honesty, Rex is still not ready to be run an NBA team.
Nic couldnt guard Richardson and Hill at the same time, which ever one he wasnt guarding was scoring on us.  We now have a 2 who can play d in circles around Rudy.
Mills was never, and will never be a Nate type pg. Midgit pgs are a thing of the past, with few exceptions that succeed these days. Look at the youngsters coming up like Rondo and Rose.
Nate has done an AMAZING job putting lineups together through injuries and constant signing of guards that dont fit his system.
I have been accused of being a KP worshiper, but someone  level headed  thatI trust, told me something that makes a lot of sense. Look at the KP firing as a support of Nate. Makes sense.
If the Blazers management wants rings, they need to start bringing in players to fit the system.

And...Frye is gone because the Blazers dont need another 7 foot 3 point shooter, and he was soft.

Also agree with Kenny, Nate has acknowledged his shortcoming, like being too strict with rotation minutes, and taking out a hot player.
Imo, Nate is not the problem, thats my final answer ;)

Thanks Ricky.   I''ll be watching @ 10.   Haven''t seen enough right hand from Shazamm.   Without the ability to take his defender either way off the bounce, let alone finish at the cup with either hand?   Second rounder at best.
