“I’ve just been working out,” he said between signing autographs Thursday. “I’ve been here and Indianapolis. I’ve been working out really hard with some people who are really good for me … basically changing my lifestyle, just getting myself right and being around people who I know and grew up with.

“Doctors have told me that I should be 100 percent by the time it’s all healed. I can’t predict the future, but I know I’m preparing myself right now to be an [NBA] all-star.”

Oden insists there was no specific reason for his desire to change as a person.

“I know what I need to do, growing up, maturing, 22 [years of age] now,” he explained. “It’s time to mature.”

I love the mindset from GO! Also, as long as he stays healthy, his only competition out West for centers is Duncan, Yao, and Marc Gasol. G.O. will be an All-Star if the team is rolling and he's playing the majority of games.

I remember Aldridge saying the same thing prior to the start of last season.  The difference both in competition at their respective positions AND ability to have a meaningful effect on the outcome of a game AT BOTH ENDS with the two, is noteworthy.  I've said it before, and at the risk of being redundant, will now say it again.  GO would have been an all-star last year, and likely even helped carry the team into the second round, with or without BRoy had it not been for his injury.  I mean, Chris Caiman made the all-star team!  GO was initially set to be one of the new faces of the league before going down the first time.  He's THAT special of a player.  If "out of sight" means "out of mind" for any of you fans out there...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyMOKZWwwRA

Agree with BDawg.  GO would have been an All-Star(if not, very close) had it not been for the injury.  And yes, Chris Kaman made the all-star team, meaning Oden would have knocked him out of his place if Oden stayed healthy.
Now I don't know if Oden would make the All-Star team this year, seeing as he's coming off of an injury.  If he makes it, that would be a near thing of legend.  Making an All-Star team after having 3 straight years of difficulty.  If he doesn't, which I also don't really expect him to make the All-Star team this year, Oden would still be an All-Star to us.  Because by the time All-Star week is over and Oden still isn't playing like he should be... he will now.
It's time to show the "smart" people at ESPN and prove them Oden was the right pick.

I'm not going to buy into this mindset that's comon amongst fanatics that they feel their players owe them something, as the late Duck put it in the documentary "Mania" blazer fans have traditionally been unique in the sense that we try not to look at our players as "items on the court", and that's not how I look at Oden, not as an item that has to perform up to the expectations that come with being a high draft pick. I read the ESPN article on Adam Morrison this morning http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/5252/adam-morrison-looking-back-looking-forward and it kind of reitterated what I had already been feeling, that we need to look at these players more as people and less as assets at times. I'm not trying to ignore the fact that this game is a business, and changes need to be made sometimes, but that doesn't mean we have the right to completely ignore the human aspect just because these players make obnoxious amounts of money that in no way correlates to the performance given during the current contract.
As far as Oden goes, and gaining and spending the first overall pick, what did we invest to get that pick other than a lot of luck and a disappointing season prior to the 07 draft? What have we gotten out of it? A lot of excitement, emotions, and at times pride. Knees, backs, feet, they go out eventually, being a proffesional athlete doesn't help the situation. Oden is bound to have health issues later on in life, as he's been having them early in life, but what have we done as fans to support him during his ailments? Are we so blind that we can accost him for being plagued with injuries, just because it gets in the way of our dreams of seeing our team win a championship? Don't forget that is his dream as well, but Oden also has dreams most of us wouldn't be able to understand, such as living our lives without physical assistance, he probably has dreams of living up to the expectations of a desperate small market fan base. Oden has one dream we can all look up to, and one we hopefully can all share, and that is facing adversity, even if he's not able to overcome it, and even if he struggles to stay healthy, there can be no doubt he is facing that challenge to the best of his ability, and still has dreams of being an all star for us. For that, Oden can never be a bust in my opinion. As much as I dislike any laker, Lamar Odom put it eloquently when talking about Morrison, "If you sell fish, everybody expects you to sell the most fish."

Sorry this turned into a rant.

Nice points Crim, and honestly, points I feel needed to be made.  I will say though, Portland being a smaller market, that less of that "players as THINGS" and not people exists in the minds and hearts of fans here than you might find to be the case in, say, New York.  I read the entire interview Mike Barrett had with Joel recently (it's on the home page of this site under Barrett's blog) and found it to be very insightful.  I've always admired Joel for his work ethic and toughness, the latter of which I believe was missed last season as much as anything.  Hearing him speak about daily tasks, simple things many of us take for granted every day, being difficult for him if not impossible really made me think.  I've been injured before myself, and at the time, lived alone.  I remember making dinner in my kitchen, then having to put my plate on the floor, pushing it into my living room like a dog with my nose as I crawled on all fours, just so that I could watch some hoop while I ate!  Talk about perspective!  I could relate to some of what Joel was saying.  However, I can't imagine what it would be like to be Joel these past few months, particularly during and following the shower injury.

...and you thought YOUR post was a rant!  :)

Best wishes and a speedy, FULL recovery Vanilla Gorilla!

I feel ya, I really started to loathe all the trade talks concerning Joel after reading that article. How can we honestly fathom seeing Killa Pryzbilla wearing a non Blazer jersey, it would tear us up in side, even worse who's going to need a player like Killa? Watching Blake go to the Lakers was hard, seeing Killa go to the Heat or to go back up Dwight Howard for instance would be life-threatening to our communal stress levels.

for those of that didn't get it, hysterical laughter. GO's been here 3 years now, and barely managed to play 82 games, even when he does play he's no where near allstar caliber. 10 points a game at best and always 4 fouls through 3 quarters. this was funny thou, best laugh ive had all day

I couldnt agree more, they will win, if they have Oden. But see this takes me back to the "who should start" thread, if oden gets hurt early in the season because of the pressure to start him, its gonna be a loooooong season in the RG

We won't have a losing season if G.O. goes down, without him we can still contend in the paint with most teams with Camby, and dominate most teams with Camby and Pryzbilla at the 5. It's a great sign that they realized Oden's excess bulk was a bad move, and they have rectified that situation. He wants to be great, something other 1st overall flops (Jamarcus Russel and Kwame come to mind) can't say and believe it.

With Greg Oden .. Portland are Championship caliber team .. With out .. Portlands a VERY good western confrence team.

Oden you have to realize the title will go threw Portland once you establish your dominance in the league no one will be able to handle you down low ..

A natural 7ft'er that can go left or right .. There was a man in the league like this before .. his name was Kareem .. and he sorta was a big deal when he walked the court ..

    Just like you.
