What should Portland do with Rudy?
Accommodate his rumored trade request (60)
     66%
Keep him and hope he returns to his Rookie year form (26)
     29%
    Other (Please Specify) (5)
     5%

Outside of Chris Paul to Portland trade rumors, the most talked about topic has to be Rudy Fernandez and what to do with him. It was not but a year ago that Rudy was the talk of the town, the flavor of the month, and everyone's favorite player. Chants of "RUUUUUDY" rang throughout the Rose Garden all throughout the 2008-09 season and he responded by setting the rookie 3 point field goal record (159) and talks of moving him last offseason were thought to be blasphemous or sacrilegious as evidenced by his 98% approval rating.

The next year came and went, and like most of his fellow teammates, Rudy experienced consistent and prolonged injuries throughout the season, causing a decline in performance. Rumors started to leak out from his native country of Spain that he wanted out, wanted to be 'The Man', and wanted to go back home. Whether they were legitimate or not, fans caught wind of it and his approval rating dropped down to 40% this past offseason. Now Jason Quick is reporting Portland is looking for a fast trade involving Rudy Fernandez, with Boston, Chicago, and New York seemingly the most likely destinations for #5.

What should the Blazers do? Cater to the request of a reportedly unhappy player or stick with him and hope he can return to his former 3 point draining, fast breaking running, alley-oop throwing, fancy passing self?

I think you have to let him go regardless of what it costs you. When it comes to loyalty or class in the media - Rudy doesn't have any. It's all about Rudy - and that doesn't work here. I can feel for him with the injuries, but his mouth isn't working for me. All I remember about him from the playoffs (aside from the one game where he hit some desperate 3's that didn't matter in the end of a loss) was him standing around and fouling on D giving up and 1's while he had nothing to contribute on offense. When he came here I thought he was going to be the player that could come in and keep things rolling when Brandon went out of the game. Well, he's no Brandon - that's for sure. If it were up to me I would have told him to shut his mouth last year, and if it didn't happen - I would have just sent him home the way they did to D. Miles. That's what I would do now if they can't move him. The prima donna attitude doesn't belong here, and he's not at the level where he can get away with that anywhere else either in my opinion. He's just a weird guy.

I say let him rot at the end of the bench since the most we could get for him is a bag of chips (if we're lucky) at this point.  Well if it's a bag of Dorito's then maybe we can make the trade....

Keep him.  He's a valuable member of our team and worthy of a roster spot.  Unless he's part of a potential Chris Paul/multi-player trade, I vote to keep him.

I've been calling for him to be traded for quite some time now so I think we need to accommodate him and deal him to a preferred destination. I don't see this as catering to his whining demands, rather getting the most value out of him. It would be foolish and immature to rot him on the bench for 2 years without getting anything of value back. Not only would it destroy our chemistry or locker room, but it wouldn't look good to opposing players who could eventually sign with us. Also, by dealing him to a preferred team, they know they are getting him and the chances of him bolting for Spain are smaller than say if the Grizzlies dealt for him. Obviously Memphis wouldn't give up anything because they know it'd be a rental player. Let's be the bigger man in all of this and just put this situation behind us while bettering the team in the long run.

I think Rudy has great potential to be an asset to any NBA team. I would be happy if he stayed with us, but if you look at all of his interviews and he's asked all the time if he wants to be here in Portland, and he never gives a straight answer. I get the feeling that he does not like being here, and therefore he probably should not be here. If he's not happy, he's not going to play with heart for us. Get someone who wants to be a Trailblazer.

There is no way that Rudy will progress with the Trailblazers with style of McMillans game plans. He will be much more will adopt with the running game style of the NY Knicks Coach.

Trading Rudy to any of those top caliber East Coast team is helping the East Coast team more dominant over the West unless we're getting good return in the caliber of Rondo or even Allen. But Rondo is a perfect trade as he is a pure young point guard.

theres no way the celtics would give up rondo or allen for rudy.  Also both of those deals are financially impossible since the blazers are over the salary cap limit

i say keep him. all this talk isnt even his own. he wants to stay. he loves the team. the loves the city (too bad the opposites not true right now). he gives BRoy the leadership he deserves. All he needs is A DIFFERENT ROLE!!!!! rudys not a spot up 3 alone. never has been. he actually misses more of them when thats all you let him do. anyone whos seen him play knows this. last year was dif because McMillan handicapped him to just perimeter play (notice nowhere close to the same alleyoops as the 1st yr). PLEASE CHECK OUT THE TRANSLATED INTERVIEW OF HIM ON SPANISH RADIO ON MY BLOG!! just a bit of insight on what HIS thoughts are and not just RUMORS.

As much as I like Rudy, I hate to see any Blazer so unhappy.
His defense costs the Blazers, and I honestly thought that he would be the one to benefit the most playing with Dre.  That did not happen.
Let him stay in Spain where he can be a rock star. That is not in the future for him as a Blazer.

But ...  If we could get Taj Gibson for him and Pendergraph, pull the trigger !! Taj is a baller .

Thanks to DusterBuster over on RealGM for providing us with this transcript of Quick talking with the guys from Wheels at Work:
Q - We now know Rudy wants out and that Boston, NY and Chicago are the teams most interested in him. Is that because the Blazers want to send him East or just because that is the teams most interested?

A - Those are just the teams most interested. It sounds like Boston is the most likely scenario. Knicks don't have picks to offer, the Blazers could package Rudy with another player for NY, but a 1 for 1 won't work for Portland (Blazers don't want Bill Walker or Toney Douglas). Chicago has an attractive pick from Charlotte.

I do believe the Blazers are looking to pair Rudy with another player to get a little creative with a deal. It doesn't look like the deal will happen as soon as Rudy's camp would like. Cho flying to Vegas on Sunday to talk with McMillan and talk about the direction of the team.

Q - Is the Rudy deal Rich Cho's main focus right now?

A - No. There is another deal Cho is working on. Rudy is Priority #2 right now, that's the sense I and Andy Miller (Rudy's Agent) get. He is extremely busy right now and it's hard to get any time with him. I don't know what deals he's working on. I do know that he has been talking to teams about Rudy, but he hasn't assured Rudy's camp that he'll be dealt. He has the company line that "We're going to do what's best for the organization." The price has to be right, the team isn't going to deal him just because Rudy's upset.

Q - Do you get a sense that Cho doesn't have any loyalties on this team so that he's willing to do more of a consolidation trade?

A - Ya, there's a couple things we're finding out about Cho. He's true to his word about being calculated, no knee jerk reactions. He's also able to pacify agents. Rudy's agents felt that KP and Penn weren't listening to them and had gave them promises the team didn't fulfill. They feel Cho has been proactive and has been active in real trade talks.

Q - Is Paul Allen going to be part of the conversation Sunday?

A - I don't know, but he'll likely be involved in one way or another.

Q - Does Paul Allen want results soon?

A - Yes. The trade demand Rudy made in December to Penn and Pritchard was never relayed to Allen and this angered him, another issue that caused problems between Allen and Pritchard. Rudy doesn't want to play for McMillan and their camp was told that McMillan is in solid ground with Mr. Allen, so that's why they have decided that it's time for him to go.

Q- Does he now want to stay in the NBA and not leave for Europe?

A - Yes. His main goal is to stay in the NBA, but he is willing to go back to Europe if he has to. This has been a problem with a lot of Rudy deals. Teams call Rudy's Agent and ask if Rudy wants to play for them. This happened with Minnesota and they were told he didn't want to play for them, so they backed off. Rudy has some requirements for a team. He wants to start, he wants a big role and he wants a big city.
The bottom part really stood out to me. If those really are his expectations, he's setting himself up for a letdown. But again, this is all here say at the moment.

KEEP HIM!!!! Rudy is my favorite player! I would cry if he left the Trailblazers! Give him some time. He can get back in to his rookie form. He can make those threes. He's Rudy Fernandez, the HOTTEST player in the NBA. He's an excellent player. Who makes a three better than Rudy??? He can make shots over Yao Ming! We can't trade him! I would definitely be sobbing for days! They can't trade Rudy! I haven't even gotten an autograph yet! He is a magnificent player! I was at the game when he came back from his injury. Everybody in there was going crazy! When Rudy made that first shot in the game when he came back, it was a three pointer. Portland was going crazy! We had Rudy back! And now, you want to trade him? Oregon loves Rudy. Not just Portland, all of Oregon loves Rudy. He's Rudy Fernandez! He is excellent, and we need to keep him. I LOVE YOU RUDY!!!!!!!

I'm with you Hawes.  Is this the same guy that appeared to have lost all confidence in himself late in the season and more noteably, in Portland's first round series against Phoenix?  He HAD that opportunity HERE, with BRoy down...and disappeared.  Apparently, he has found the fountain of self-confidence, attempting to determine his next destination AND the role he will play once there!  Amazing.  Since we fans had to wait until the OFFSEASON to see you perform a 180 this year, let me be the first to say, "good luck"!

I keep hearing this statement from people in the pro-Rudy camp, but he had every conceivable opportunity to walk the walk and he was a huge disappointment. Roy got hurt for a month in the season and later on in the playoffs. The minutes were there. We ran Rudy off of screens, tried letting him bring the ball up the floor to create, yet he'd just end up turning the ball over. How much more time can you give a player? It got so bad that Nate had to put Bayless in the starting lineup to keep us from being embarrassed by Phoenix. Also, I understand that some people really do like him, but do you want to root for somebody who doesn't want to be a Trail Blazer? For me, the team will always come before any one player.

they should take that deal,  taj is good and is still developing.  also if the knicks offer wilson chandler the blazers should consider agreeing to that deal.  only problem with that deal is that chandlers contract expires next year and also the blazers wouldnt have enough minutes at small forward to give chandler, batum, babbitt, and mathews the minutes they need, so they would have to trade one of them to clear up playing time.

Taj Gibson would be a great snag for rudy, just in the height we gain.  I personally like him, being from SoCal and him being a former Trojan. :D.  His college stats are nothing impressive but none the less decent. In his transition to the NBA his strong shooting % dropped a bit, but he made up for it in his effort off the boards. The only, and i mean the ONLY thing i see that is a set back, is the 3pt aspect of his game.
But if the CHI deal falls through and the Celtics are still interested, their current roster has only 1SF(Pierce), but they have gaurds to spare, and one of whom i favor.

    Tell me what you think

If Chandler's contract expires next year. sounds like a good piece to send to New Orleans. I'd probably take the Taj Gibson trade, We've stored so many draft picks overseas that I'm starting to lose my interest in the draft. That or use Rudy as a piece to something bigger. I just want all the rumors to finalize and for something to happen. These pins and needles are hurting my back side.

ilyasova is good, but his style of play is too similar to lamarcus' style so it would be kind of pointless to trade for him.  I think that if they do trade rudy it should be for gibson because he gives the blazers everything at the power forward position that they dont get with lamarcus besides three point shooting.  Also gibson was the pac 10 defensive player of the year in his last year at usc and averaged 1.5 blocks per game so he would add some much needed toughness to the blazers on d.

Sorry to break it to you Rudy lovers, but he's not needed in Rip City.  His exit would not just be for the team's sake.  It'd be for his.  I hate to see him unhappy on the bench.  He deserves to play, but Portland's no longer the place for him.  If the Blazers want to get anywhere in the post-season, we can't have his shooting inconsistency and just-stand-there defense.  Plus, Roy will get more minutes, and that can only mean good things.

I'll pass, especially since he hasn't shown anything in Memphis. Dante is just as good of a prospect, if not better. Someone else mentioned Daniels for Rudy and thats a big N-O from me as well. I still believe Portland is looking to get the best pick possible back in return for Rudy if they do indeed trade him, seeing as we already have a plethora of shooting guards.
