    2000-01 Portland Trail Blazers

With their incessant bickering and boorish behavior, the Trail Blazers, long cherished in Portland, alienated their customers and disgusted the rest of the league's fans. The biggest lightning rod, of course, was forward Rasheed Wallace (pictured, left, with Bonzi Wells), who set an NBA record with 41 technical fouls, threw a towel in the face of teammate Arvydas Sabonis and had to be restrained by teammates from charging coach Mike Dunleavy in the locker room. The Oregonian described the Blazers as "tanking it in the playoffs [in a first-round sweep to the Lakers] amid a cloud of tantrums and technicals." The frightening aspect of this "Jail Blazers" era is that there are multiple teams from which to choose and moments to pinpoint. To wit: The following season, in December 2001, swingman Bonzi Wells told SI about being booed: "We're not really going to worry about what the hell [the fans] think about us. They really don't matter to us. They can boo us every day but they are still going to ask for our autographs if they see us on the street. That's why they are fans and we are NBA players." -- Richard Deitsch

Gotta love that quote from Bonzi...really tells how far this franchise had to turn around and rebuild their image to the fans.

I remember getting tickets for the Drexler number retirement vs. the Grizzles back in 2001 thinking this should be a great game and the team should be pumped to get a win...the only thing I remember was Sheed getting ejected late in the 2nd Quarter and leaving late in the 3rd totally disgusted with myself. Telling myself i'm never buying tickets to see this team play ever again.

I remember that quote from Bonzi. That comment was one of the worst things that happened in my opinion. I also remember Scottie saying something like 'we're just here to entertain - this is team is not built to win'. After that it was like... what's the point to me. That one hurt. I did still go to a lot of games back then though, and I did want to win with that team. Guess I'm a sucker. In a lot of ways I'm glad we went thru it and I'm glad we are where we are now. It's been a wild ride, but the lower the lows are... the higher the highs are. That's what it's all about.

Man, that was the game where everything just went down the drain. Talk about meltdown. That team was so volatile.

@ Clyde ... SERIOUSLY! That team had SOOOOO much talent. I remember always hearing the word 'UNDERACHIEVING', then it was 'POTENTIAL', now it's ????? They're on their way. What a come back!

Thinking back on it, I don't really mind being on that list at all if we had won something, but we let our emotions get the better of us. Although I don't like many of those teams on that list, a lot of them still reached the ultimate goal of winning a title, while we fizzled out in the 1st round....

If I mention the Blazers in front of the mother of my best friend she still complains. They are still the Jail Blazers in her eyes. I'm trying to convince her that they are nothing like that team anymore. How could I though? They gave us such a horrible reputation. No wonder I didn't watch any games as a child.
I am a fan of having a friend turn to me and say "I can't wait for November" and understanding exactly how they feel.

Shabazz or Saric. We need bench scoring.

But I rather move up and get Oladipo.
