Wouldn't it make more sense for NO to trade Paul AFTER this season?

The Hornets said (before 'the meeting') that they would not necessary trade Paul to one of the teams he wants to go to - instead they would trade him where it made the most sence for their franchise. For that reason I wouldn't read too much into where he said he wants to go, when he wants to go, or to whom, of those teams, is in the best position to get him.

Since he has two years on his contract, and it looks like he's making about 13.5/year. Unless NO gets a great offer they can't refuse, why wouldn't they just play with him this year and deal him next off-season?

If they did that, they could get something back for him and he would still have value as a player AND as an expiring contract to a team that doesn't think they can keep him.

If you think about it like that, the press release they made today makes some sense. Afterall, if they are going to play with him this year, wouldn't they want their ticket holders to think all is well so come and spend your money.

The CP3 deal looked a lot more realistic to me last week. Paul's agent has contacted all of the teams on his list. We already know that Portland made an offer for him before. Just based on the things that we DO know, It's starting to look our offer wasn't good enough.

    To plays Devil's Advocate here-

-They risk him getting injured again and not getting hardly anything in return
-If teams know they aren't on his preferred list, why would they go after him with their assets for a 1 year rental?
-The longer they wait to move him, the lower the offers will be, because teams know New Orleans will be antsy to move him if he shows more and more displeasure being with the team

    All good points.

To adress the first one - I guess that's part of the game. No different than any other player... but to your point that risk would be there. The reward would be another year of Chris Paul and good ticket sales for the NO hopefulls that would believe they had their differences worked out and Paul is going to stay.

The second point - I guess the only train of thought that would make sense for those teams would be that they would have two years of tickets sales associated with one of the top jersey sellers in the league, they would win more games for a couple of years, and then they would clear 14 million from their salary cap if/when he leaves. How realistic that would be would depend on what they have to offer. What I took from the NO front office statement is that they care less about where Paul lands than they do where their franchise lands going forward. I don't know the details of Paul's deal, but it doesn't look like he has the power to veto a trade.

To the third point - I don't really have a great come back. Yes, NO will come to a point after next off-season when they HAVE to deal him or he walks and they get nothing. I guess they do lose some leverage in that way as time goes on and in that whoever ends up with him is going to have to deal with him at the end of his contract anyway - but he'll truly be an expiring contract at next off-season too. Whoever gets him is going to be able to unload 14 million after one season and they have a chance to retain (in my opinion) the best point guard in the game. They will still get some good offers and although their leverage will be diminished in that way, Paul's vaule will at that point be driven by the bidding. There may be some teams that aren't even interested in him this year that will be very interested in him next year which may actually drive his value UP.

I guess my point is that it's starting to look like NO didn't feel like they could get enough back for him, and CP3 actually may be a Hornet again next year. I STILL think we're going to have a GREAT season regardless. Even if we don't make a move at point guard.

    DANG! another typo...

The second point - I guess... ONE YEAR of ticket sales...

I want him here as bad as you do DHawes. I just think NO has him a little overvalued in their own minds. The deals I saw Portland offering were pretty darn good considering that he's going to be gone soon regardless. If those offers were real and they passed them up, I think they blew it. We all have a tendancy to over value our own players (ex... Nic Batum - great player... but come on! - for Chris Paul?!?). Know what I mean?

You think Sacramento will trade 2014 1st rd pick for our 10th pick? That will for sure give us a nice lottery pick next year, then trade the lottery pick and a vet either Matthews or Batum for the number 1 pick in 2014, yup, you guess it, Andrew W...

I love the Grit and Grind, and I love the Spurs timeless play. I think if the Spurs get to the finals, they will beat the heat, but they won''t beat the Grizzlies easily, and the Grizz can''t beat the Heat. I know it''s weird.
