ESPN's John Hollinger: If Hornets look to trade CP3, Portland in a great position

ESPN's John Hollinger is asked about the possibility of Chris Paul coming to Portland (even though he asked Blazers fans not to ask him about it) and says that IF the Hornets decide to trade Paul (a HUGE if), the Trail Blazers would be in a good position to make a move for him:

**IF** the Hornets put CP on the market -- which I seriously doubt will happen until midseason at the absolute earliest -- the Blazers are in great position to win a bidding war because of the exirings (Przybilla + Miller) and all the other young assets they can put into a deal.

It is a lot of ifs. Personally, I think Hollinger is over-estimating NOLA's leverage just because CP3 still has 2 years on his deal. If he meets with the Hornets front office on Monday and says there's no way he's re-signing after his contract is up, they'd have to make a move ASAP. Losing their best player for nothing would pretty much be the end of the end for the Hornets.

Oh lordy, all this speculation is going to have me glued to my computer all day Monday. I don't want to give up too many good role players (I.e. BOTH Batum and Oden in same package), that just might be too much.

I don't think Oden is going to be a part of any deal.

CP3 and his camp have let the cat out of the bag. N.O. can't simply let this ride and bring back a SUPERSTAR who does not want to be there. It would be bad for the young talent that they have in Collison and Thornton. Collison is the future now and his growth will be slowed down if you have Paul on this team. I am glad that Hollinger has said that Portland has a legit opportunity to trade for Paul because alot of the so called "experts" are not even mentioning the Blazers at all. I keep hearing alot about New York and Orlando and a little while ago I was reading about Houston and maybe Oklahoma City.

I do not know if Portland will get Paul if and when N.O. start taking bids for his services but I do know that the Blazers have (3) crucial things in their favor:

    1. Two expiring contracts that are over 14 million.

    2. The deepest pool of young talent in the league: Dante Cunningham, Bayless, Patty Mills, Babbitt who reminds me of Toni Kukok, Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum and Greg Oden.

    3. The most important......a very rich owner who would gladly take the monster contract of Okafor.

    I agree completely with lightskin350.

We are probably in the best position to bring him here. Rich Cho needs to try very very hard.I just wouldn"t want to give up batum, but can one else can leave!!

With B.Smooth and CP3 in the starting back court would be INSANE!!... along with Oden, LA, and Batum or Cunningham or Babbit this team will go deep in the playoffs!

Taking into consideration the 4 teams  he wants to play for (ORL,NY,DAL,PDX), we have the best package to offer.

Dallas has no chance. They traded away their one asset to help NO cut costs in Dampier's non-guaranteed contract. Who else can they offer? Roddy Beuabois? Sure, great young piece, but he plays the same position as Darren Collison. It would be too redundant.

What can Orlando pony up? Jameer Nelson and Carter's expiring deal is about the best they can do, but when the centerpiece is another point guard, its the same situation as above, too redundant. Orlando just doesn't strike me as the team that has the young talent to get a deal like this done.

Watch out for the Knicks. They have Curry's expiring deal and good, young talent. They value Danilo Gallinari as we do Batum. The one thing we have in our favor is we have future picks we can offer since theirs are traded and more young talent.

PDX has the most to offer: expiring contracts (Miller, Joel), overseas talent (Claver,Freeland), future draft picks, and young talent (Oden,Batum,Bayless,Rudy) If the price is right, my gut says if Paul is dealt, he'll be a Trail Blazer based on everything above.

You are forgetting another thing in Portland's favor, Monty Williams  is the head coach. He knows the Blazers roster up and down. If Portland were to make a legitimate bid for CP3, Williams would be able to say whether it is a fair enough trade or not and have the background with these guys to known what's happening. Trading with any other team would end up being a lot of "ifs" for them.

If LeBron James' recommendation to Paul holds any water, then out of the 4 teams Chris Paul wants to go to 2 of them would be eliminated. That leaves Dallas and Portland. They have Caron Butler to offer, but my guess would be NO would want young talent and expiring contracts in return. Man this is too much for my heart haha.

good to hear but  i know it wont happen but i kinda think that should do this because all that young talent they wood get will make there team over all better than with Paul. that's the opinion of this young blazer fan.

I am also with Lightskin350. The three things he listed are right on point.

I would also add that we have a bona-fide All-Star PG whom Paul likes and appears to play with well (at least, as far as All-Star game chemistry goes), a very promising PF who would only get BETTER (imagine that for just a moment) with Paul facilitating, and potentially the best center in the West. If Paul is genuine in wanting to win, this is the best desitination for him. I realize it would be up to NO, but if he pushes hard enough, who knows what they will do or what they will settle for? Besides, as already noted, we have the best expiring contracts and young players to give to NO, who would immediately go into a re-building mode.

    Can't wait for Monday.

Paul wants to win. I think once he gets here he will stay. The blazers are realy the only game in town( besides the seahawks). Trade LA, for paul. we would get more back that way. Dont be so quick to defend him, LA does not care about porland, he says it every time he plays. by not banging low, letting roy get hurt( becouse roy is trying to score or rebound,) LA is standing 10-13f out side. Is he playing the 4 spot? Did buck williams stand out side?throw in rudy too. Did any one watch the playoffs? he was bad!

Asinine. I try to ignore these type of posts, but wow.

Every owner wants to win, some just more than others.
The Seahawks are in Seattle, and last time I checked that wasn't that cities only team.
LA for Paul is dumb because they have west, and as we know Lamarcus can't play center, and West would be even worse.
If LA didn't want to play, he could have had a mysterious wrist injury like Raja Bell did after being traded to Golden State, the rest of the team was hurt so no one would have suspected foul play and he was coming off a contract signing so he wouldn't have had to worry about getting paid. Instead he did what Nate asked of him in every way, even playing out of position a lot when needed before we got Camby.
Letting Roy get hurt? Are you freaking kidding me? LA's 12-15 footer opens up the lane for players like Andre and Roy.
If Buck Williams had a jump shot he would have stood outside a bit, instead it was Duckworth who took the one handed mid range shot.
They squeezed down on our only healthy player in the playoffs and forced Aldridge to do a lot, even more than what we already asked him to do during the regular season. I not only watched the playoffs, I watched as many regular season games as I were able to, and what I saw was a team without one solid identity on the court, even Roy had a tough year. Rudy just isn't that kind of guy who can turn it on at will, which is why he isn't compatible with what the blazers needs as a scoring 2 off the bench, but don't doubt that he has skill or desire to win.

Nic Batum is my favorite player by far, but Cp3 is the best point guard in the NBA and we need to do whatever we can to get him.  If that means batum and Dre for Cp3 fine Cp3 is much better than Andre and Wesley Matthews can easily fill the starting small forward roll.  We can't make it far in the playoffs with Andre Miller as are starter so if we can't trade for Cp3 we still need a point guard and I like Darren Collison or someone like monta ellis over Andre Miller.  With a new point guard we are serious title contenders.
I am a fan of Lamarcus getting hot early and getting others open threes

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
