Here's another reason to do what you have to do what you have to do to get CP3... even if it means losing Nic

Remember when Tim Donaghy got busted betting on games? After he did his time, he did an interview with Willamette Weekley where he said that basically because of the way things are in the NBA, it would be very difficult for a small market team like Portland to win a championship unless they landed a big name...

But wouldn’t those teams get there anyway?

Not necessarily. People will argue that Portland was a better team than Phoenix and that Dallas was a better team than San Antonio. But those teams haven’t advanced. When you talk about a Steve Nash and [Amar’e] Stoudemire moving on versus the guys from small-city Portland, what’s better for the NBA? The referees are aware of what’s good for the league.

So are we fools here for believing the Blazers can ever win another championship?

It would be very, very difficult. They would have to be in a position to get a guy with a big name, like a Shaquille or a LeBron, in the draft.

Well, NOW'S OUR CHANCE! Check out the whole interview if you don't like the trade and see if it changes your mind at all.

I know this guy doesn't have a lot of credibility with some people. I don't really follow that train of thought. I think what he says is legit. If this CP3 deal is at all realistic (which I think it is - Monty Williams LOVES Batum), then we HAVE to do it. The more I think about it, the more it seems like a no brainer. To get someone like Paul it's going to hurt a little. If we do it, just lay back and go with it. I think this team will be AWESOME with Paul!

I agree Jason, even though if Roy was healthy and 100% we would of had the suns i have no doubt in my mind about that. But after that the Fakers would of had us i think since we didnt have size besides Camby :( but yes Paul would make this team more recognized and i bet we would get alot more national tv games :D becuse face it even if we do good no one really talks about us and i think its pathetic, all teams that do good should get the same recognition but sadly i don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.

I think that if we make the trade it can not be for just the 2 years left on his contract. We can not be willing to trade away the future for the off chance of winning a title in the next 2 years. we would need him to sign an extension. If he was willing to do that I would say trade for him even if that meant Oden, Nic  or LA.

Yeah, if we could get him extended now that would be great. But if we're playing in the finals within 2 years, he'll love it here and we'll get the deal done in his option year. I do think we would be in the finals. Do you think we would be be better than the Lakers? I think we would.

No we get plenty of coverage from the national media. But why talk about the Blazers who haven't won a championship since 1977 when you could talk about Kobe Bryant who has won a few championships?

I agree with you Bertram. That wasn't really the point I was trying to make. I wasn't complaining about the coverage. I think it's about right based on what we've done so far. What I was trying to say is that I believe Donaghy when he says what he said - and now it looks like we may have a chance to get in the game so to speak as far as bringing a perennial all-star here and getting that kind of support from the league. Batum is one of my favirite players. I like everything about the guys game. He great... but he doesn't bring the kind of attention and respect from the league that CP3 would. That respect and support translates to calls and wins. I'm tired of all the consistantly crappy officiating we get here, and if that's the reason why - lets stop banging our heads against the wall and fix it. I was at a Dallas game last year that almost caused a riot because of the officiating. In the playoffs it gets even worse. Against Houston the year before last, even Nate got fined for talking about it. The officiating in the Phoenix series was horrible. Let's get the league behind us if that's what it takes. If we have to bring a CP3 in here to do it, then that's what we have to do. Know what I mean?

sadly its true, this year's playoff debacle wasn't nearly as bad as the year before last. After watching Yao's Mcgrady-less Rockets get handed their first conference finals birth since the days of Hakeem, I vowed to get my political drama solely from PBS Newshour and quit wasting my time watching the more predictable National Basketball Association, and while that has been tough to live up to (in fact I have failed miserably), since we have no other major sports teams in Portland, I resigned to just watching from home and not renewing my season tickets.

All that being said, I don't want to have to take the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" approach that Lebron has redefined over the summer. However the most recent usage of that would apply to our situation, with us possibly joining forces with the sovereign-shotcalling-entity that is CP3, is not the one that bothers me most. It's the old usage of that aged phrase, I don't want to feel like our great crew of great people isn't enough for us as fans, because it isn't enough for "Donald" Stern. I'm not going to "sell my soul" to win a championship, or in other words related to parts of this thread...I don't want to sell my morals, to get enough attention to get Stern his ratings so he can allow us to win a championship.

However, I do believe Mo Williams could have somewhat of  a high trade value. Olshey needs to make a deal to get a big man while we...
