    From AOL Fanhouse-

"I thought they would match,'' Matthews said in a phone interview with FanHouse minutes after he heard from his agent, Lance Young, that the Jazz would sign guard Raja Bell to a three-year, $10 million contract as his replacement and not match the five-year, $33.4 million offer sheet he had signed with the Trail Blazers as a restricted free agent. "After all, they said I was a priority.''

When Young called Matthews and told him he was going to Portland, Matthews said he was "excited'' and said he uttered, "Let's do it.'' But part of him wondered why the Jazz had never made him an initial offer.

"They said that I was a priority, but they never made me an offer,'' said Matthews, who said the Jazz used the strategy of having him bring back an offer sheet. "They never offered me anything. I'm sure that if they would have made an offer, it would have been a fair offer and I might have taken it.''
    And this...
Now that Matthews is with the Trail Blazers, he's fired up.

"I'm looking forward to it,'' said Matthews, who won't start at shooting guard for Portland due to Brandon Roy but could unseat Nicolas Batum as the starting small forward. "It's a great organization. Whether they want me to start or come off the bench, it's fine with me. I can be a defender for them.''
    Finally-
Matthews knows there will be naysayers claiming he's overpaid.

"I guess some people think that I was overpaid if they didn't match,'' Matthews said of the Jazz letting him go. "But I can't listen to that. But I'm going to keep working. That's why I'm going to the gym right now (in Milwaukee, where he played in college and near his home of Madison, Wis.) to work out.''

"I'm going to show them that I'm worth the money,'' said Matthews, who finished last season as Utah's starting shooting guard, and really helped his worth by averaging 13.2 points in 10 playoff games.

Great addition. Versatile player defensively and provides energy and toughness when given minutes.

Great to have him. Now, where's our GM? Lets clear up some roster spots. Bayless, won't get many minutes at the SG, Rudy is as good as out the door, what can we get done? Then, do we keep Mills? Where do we go? Larry Miller, you targeted the end of this week as your deadline to have someone in place. Make an offer to Pfund before New Orleans snags him up.

    Welcome to Portland !!

But he wont take Nics starting spot.  It appears (on paper at least) that our perimeter d, and center issues have been improved.

From everything I read Johnson held his own with Wall, what more could we ask ??
Sorry Patty, I hope someone signs you, you have played very well....

What will Rudy do now ????

    Go Blazers !!!

This is all stirring up to be a very interesting off-season once we have a GM in place. Log jam at the 2 guard and point guard. Who's going and who's staying?

Don't forget, who's coming in? As far as one scrimmage proving anything for Johnson holding his own against Wall, we don't know what he's going to be like at the NBA level. He only played one year in college which means defenses haven't had the chance to get used to him yet. Patty was given the day off which tells me they are pretty confident in his abilities over Johnson's. We'll see, but 18 minutes of a 60 minute scrimmage doesn't say much. That's all John Wall played I heard.

Now that the draft is over and we got our free agent, let the trade talk fly! We now have 16 players on roster, 14 with guaranteed contracts and a log jam in the backcourt as well as up front with the centers. Look for Dre, Joel, Rudy, and even as much as it pains me to say it, Bayless, to be in A LOT of rumors this summer. We definitely need a major consolidation trade.

Like I have said all along, I will believe in Mills when Nate does. Once again, we are talking about a third string pg here.
Blake jr getting time before Mills when a game wasnt decided last season speaks volumes to me. But I would have already signed Raja or Stevie by now and saved $,  it looks like Jackson and Sloan both agree with me on those players.
What I would like to see is the total stats from  summer league with Mills and Johnson, including turnovers and steals.  I'm female, and will never be impressed by things just because they go fast. I want a player who improves the teams weakness,  Mills is a defensive liability with his size, and I've seen turnovers that looked like Chacho so far, and we all know how well Nate likes those.....

Raja is 33 and coming off a couple injury riddled seasons. Utah fans aren't too thrilled with signing him instead of Wesley. I posted the links to their summer league stats on the "Armon vs. Patty" Thread. Make sure they are accurate though, because they hadn't updated Armon's 2nd game but had Patty's 2nd game in there.

Thanks Hawes, I meant at the end of summer league, I should have been more specific.  I will be checking that out.
Raja may be 33, but I don't buy the injury riddled, he did not want to play in Oakland, period. He's a cocky one.
The ball is completely in Utahs court on their choices.  My personal opinion is that Utah fans are upset that Portland is beating them to the punch.  They will love Raja,  just like  Laker fans will Stevie .
We will all see what happens as the season plays out for those teams , that we will once again be in a dogfight with come playoff time.

Would we have wanted someone like Raja on our team who just dogs it if he's not 'feelin' his team or situation that he's in? No thanks! I'm loving the type of hard-working players we're adding this offseason.

The real question is... Where is the agenda?  What are we trying to do with this team?  I think we need help at the forward positions and we are running around signing every guard in the country.  We need a GM.

The agenda needed to be improving perimeter d, and healthy centers. Which was accomplished.  We are fine at the forward positions, Jeff and Dante need minutes.  We also have MAR- CUS  CAM- BY now, with Oden and Pryz (fingers crossed).  If Larry Miller learned from KP and Penn, he doesnt need to be in a hurry to find a gm.  Fix the comcast deal first.
As far as would we want Raja?  I would. I started asking for him right after Jason Richardson torched us in the playoffs. The Blazers cant all be saints. That cocky is what makes him such a good defender. I see it more as he wants to play for a contender, and has pride in his game. He also has experience, and cost less.
But I'm a practical person, I dont have Mr Allens $ to spend.
The bright side of Matthews is that he can be a Blazer for many years to come.

Matthews is of nba pedigree, his Dad Wes Matthews Sr. played in the nba! he knows what it takes! and whats that? HARD WORK! DETERMINATION! & HEART! and this kid has alot of that... yeah we might have overpaid him by a few millions but how can you not love this guy? he can play the sg & sf position & might be the hungriest player on the court most nights... ;]

Mike Barrett made a interesting comment last night on Talkin Ball about other teams dictating what the Jazz players are worth, rather than the Jazz doing it themselves referencing that first quote.

I don't think he can play the 3 unless the other team goes small, he'll play the back-up 2. Like Bertram said who stays? who goes?

Oden needs this guy's Public Relations coordinator, how can you not be excited about this guy after reading that first post. Trying to figure out what the blazers are going to do about the guard position is as meaninful as trying to decide where lebron was going to go, as long as a decision is made I don't care, they all are pretty damn good at this point. The fact that they sat Patty most of last game tells me they don't want to show boat him and were looking to see if armon was worth keeping as well if not just to get a better look /experience for the kid. I think we are keeping both going into training camp at least.
I'm not certain but being that armon's going to be on a cheap second rounder's contract, one of these teams that needed Reddick/blake/ridnour might be getting a better look to see armon by pulling patty. Right now Portland and Minnesota have 51 percent of the leagues point guards, so they gotta deal with one of us, and while Kahn's known to make some donk moves, we have more legit nba ready talent to deal I think.

How many players can they have on the roster through training camp ?  What is the date they have to have the roster to 15 ??
It looks more and more like Rudy doesnt come back to me.

good question, i think we are at 15 (not counting Rudy) if they sign armon and patty...I think armon doesn't techincally have a contract with us automatically because he's a second rounder...but all that business gets pretty confusing so i don't know, dhawes prolly knows!
