Who's Been More Impressive At Summer League So Far?
    Armon Johnson (16)
     37%
    Patty Mills (27)
     63%

With the immense amount of talent accumulated on this year's Trail blazers Summer League Team, the ending result is going to be inevitable on most nights. So far, Portland has won back to back games in the Las Vegas Summer League by a combined 29 points and they do not seem to be slowing down any time soon. With that said, SL is more of a time to evaluate your young talent against other NBA team's prospects as they get ready for training camp in the fall. As it stands, Portland's roster is capped out at 15 and will be at 16 if Matthews isn't matched by Utah. Both Armon and Patty are not guaranteed to be on the active roster when the season starts seeing how the roster is maxed out and it would give the team 4 point guards on the squad. Now, things could change (IE a trade which freed up more spots for both to make the opening night roster), but for now it seems as if this Summer League will be an open audition for both Johnson and Mills to show the coaching staff what they got and how they can help the team.  While Patty is the better pure shooter, Armon looks like he has the upper hand on the defensive end of the court. Both players seem lightning quick with the ball in their hands and still have some improvement to work on in the turnover category. Taking everything into consideration (team fit, better talent, better potential), who has been more impressive to you and why?

    Stats:
    Armon Johnson || Patty Mills

If he can knock his 3 point shot down at a respectable clip, he'll be a complete point guard. I really like his ability to make something out of nothing, very similar to that of Andre Miller. He possesses a soft touch around the hoop, allowing for his runner to be accurate. Most of all though, is his defense. That will be his calling card over the course of his NBA career. He has a real good chance at becoming a valuable asset down the road strictly on his defense alone. That steal and slam last night just showed his instincts on that end of the court. His 6-3 frame plus long wingspan gives him the prototypical point guard body to go out and wreak havoc.

I have to go with Johnson. Even though we are voting on a 3rd string pg.

Perimeter defense is where the Blazers need the most improvement.  Along with injuries, fouls are our centers problem.  We can score points now, we just cant stop the other guards.
I also believe the persons vote that matters, is Nate. He played Blake jr before Mills last season.

Patty and Armon are almost the same age and are basically both rookies due to Patty having next to zero playing time last year and being injured.  Summer league stats have been comparable give  or take, although stats don't reflect a players true value to the team - it's more of what the coaching staff are wanting the players to show, in Patty's case its leading game tempo and controlling the team,  that said he is also putting up reasonable numbers.  I think your calculator needs recalibrating because for me the math says that Patty has shown more potential for a kid that played pg at international level at the age of 19 and put up impressive numbers against older, more experienced international teams- USA being one of them. Try not to overlook the fact that he is the same age as Armon.  For me Patty has him on leadership potential by bucket loads.  They both have great upsides in the different skill sets that they bring to the team.  If given the opportunity to play more I think Patty will be of more value as his career progresses.  If he stays in the NBA or goes to Euroleague, he will also have multiple FIBA and Olympic campaigns under his belt in the future - not sure if Armon will get into his national team, the 'maths' tell me the bi-product of this would be a pg with tremendous exposure that will only help develop him into the kind of player that can lead a team(with NBA quickness to boot).  His size can be a pro or con.  They're have been many top level NBA pg's that are around the 6 foot height level so I think that his height is not relevant, its just how he uses his lack of size with his speed to maintain pressure on opposing players.  Having watched the recent basketball series Patty played against Argentina and info thus far from summer league he has improved already in this area - he's been using his pace to put himself in the right positions to hold up and harass and taken some offensive charges.  Public opinion may bee divided down the line about Patty and Armon, but I think Patty will be the better value to  the team within 2-3 years.

It's got to be Patrick Mills.  Easily.  How can you go past a guy who already has multiple international campaigns under his belt - including the Olympics?  And he wasn't just a bench sitter, he was the starring point guard. Admittedly the Australian team isn't great, but it's fantastic experience, and shows Mills can handle the pressure of big time basketball.  Mills has been incredibly unlucky.  If not for injury, his college team would have played NCAA, and he would have been a top 20 draft pick.  He dominated Stephen Curry at college level, and we know what Curry has done with the opportunity he was given.  And if not for injury last season Mills would have proved himself already.  Forget his size, that's irrelevant. (his 7 rebounds in the first summer league game proves that) Mills is a big time scorer, but has shown he can lead a team around the floor as well, and rack up plenty of assists when needed. Mill will be an asset straight away, not in 2 or 3 years like Johnson might be.  Don't take a punt, go with the proven performer

Mills has far better summer league stats in less minutes.  Right now Mills game is better.

Right now, Mills has done a better overall job. Mills has gotten his numbers against the opposing team's starters. Johnson has mostly been playing in relief time for Patty, so his stats being what they are Johnson is getting those numbers against lesser competition. Granted, none of the people they are playing are NBA starters, but for Summer League, Mills is starting to show some of that NBA potential.

Patty's defense makes me eyes hurt. Anyone notice Aubrey Coleman went silent once we took Patty off of him and put Armon onto him? He locked him down. Patty's game is more suited for Summer League, while I think Armon's ball control and defense will translate over to the regular season. Don't get me wrong, I really like PAtty (and the accent) and would be fine with him as the 3rd string PG, but AJ came in and has impressed the heck out of me.

Is there a reason we can't have Patty as the 2nd, Armon 3rd?  Depending on what happens with our moves with the starting spot, we may need the depth at the PG position...should we bring someone in who has a history with injuries; ie Tony Parker.  With Armon and Patty's skill sets being so polar opposite, TOGETHER we would have everything at our disposal for any situation.  Patty is a more capable Steve Blake.  He's the shooter Steve was, better at getting to the cup, and no less of a defender.  I liked Blake, but he had a difficult time staying in front of the ball.  Mills has demonstrated on a national level that he can both run a team and score, the latter of which opens up the floor for Roy.  I like what I've seen from Armon as well, however, in fairness, I don't think a decision of this magnitude should or will be made based off of one play in summer league.  ClydeFrog pegged it for me.  A lock down defender at the PG position.  Don't look now, but we now have a lock down defender in every position, 1-5 with the acquisition of Mathews.  Playoff ready.

There's a chance they BOTH could make the team, but as it stands now (16 players if you count Wesley), one of the two will make it. I do think more moves will be made to free up some minutes for our core players, which could leave Mills and Johnson competing again, this time for backup minutes instead of a roster spot.

Also, I can't wait to see how they do tonight against #18 overall pick, Eric Bledsoe! Can Patty score on him and an Armon defend him?

Mills has two things going for him that make him a better pg, regardless of scoring.  He has the speed to upset many of the league's best pgs, and if you look at his assists, even though he may not have a stack like Wall, he really knows how to thread the ball.  Those two things are why patty can make plays another 3rd or 2nd point guard can't and why he can be a valuable addition to the team, not just another vanilla pg who can do things moderately well.  I would see Patty second and Johnson third.  I think the club should develop them both with an eye to being a contender for the future.

They are both doing great, patty's doing slightly better offensively while armon is doing slightly better defensively. Summer league's all about the guards so that speaks high for both, but it's a whole new game once they start calling the ticky tacky hand check above the free throw line in regular season games. I think armon clearly has more upside to his game due to his size mixed with being a lefty and his soft touch, while Patty could easily be instant offense off the bench like a nate robinson.

Slight edge to Johnson for that awesome D he brings. I do think he needs to hit that outside jumpshot and the 3 more consistently cause that shot will be there waiting for him. I love what Patty has been doing as well but has shown to be a defensive liability in Summer League.
