As much as it hurts, it's just another step in setting up for "THE BIG DEAL" to send Nicolas to New Orleans

Thanks Hawes for the Raja Bell reference, that makes me very happy. :) I like Williams' game , I saw a lot of him at Memphis. I'd rather get him on the court.
I agree crim, making it harder for Utah works for me.  They already lost Boozer and Korver ,ouch ... The more they pay, the less for the next player.

don't worry because batum is going no where most likely. and u can never have to many good defenders. sh!t if it could happen i might even like raja bell on this team as a bench player ;] oh and also as far as batum having slighty better numbers. matthews didn't start a full season like batum did.. so that might have something to do with it, just sayin.... i like batum he has alot of good intangibles.. but also know that matthews has great potential is hungry because he went UNDRAFTED & we all know those guys are the hungriest wanting to prove they belong! overall either way this gives a hugh blow to 1 of our nemesis's, utah is not close to as good as a team they were last year with or without matthews, but if they match it hurts their cap. if not and they let him sign. then did they let 1 get away? they are hurting either way thats all i know :)

Utah's clock to match starts tomorrow-

The Jazz will begin contemplating whether to match the five-year, $33 million offer sheet that restricted free-agent Wesley Matthews signed with the Trail Blazers on Monday.

According to a league source, Utah hadn't received official paperwork for the offer on Saturday and teams have seven days from the formal receipt to decide whether or not to match.

The Jazz will have to decide if they want to use what turns out to be their midlevel exception to retain Matthews.

Utah has already lost Carlos Boozer and Kyle Korver in free agency.

Whats with all of this talk about loosing Batum? Come on son. This move is set up to move Rudy and give Roy a more consistent back up. While a lot of you guys are bashing on WM there is a ton of positives to him. He is a young hard nosed defender who has starting play off experience. This dude was guarding Kobe, the MVP of the world champs, in the playoffs and doing it well. If we are going to win the west, we need to beat the Lakers and this guy can come off the bench and stop their main threat. He is young with loads of potential and will continue to grow with our young team.

From the on-the-court standpoint of Wes Matthews, I'm indifferent. I think he could contribute off the bench, but would take away opportunities for Babbitt to really grow. From the standpoint of, potentially, getting a young talented player that proved he could produce in the Playoffs, I think it is a valuable piece for potential trades. Again, I don't think anything will happen until the GM is in place, so we will see. Quick said on Friday that Larry Miller targeted the end of this week for that to happen. Let's hope he wasn't getting fluffed.

A few tidbits from  Barrett's Blog-

The biggest question now is, does the acquisition of Al Jefferson increase or decrease the chances of the Jazz matching Portland's offer to Matthews? Some think it makes them more likely to match, because they are thin at Matthews' spot, and are having a little troubling finding an adequate replacement. Ronnie Brewer, thought to be an easy target for them, is in demand from a couple of other teams now.

But, here's the x-factor, at least the way I see it. Jefferson gave them another power forward, but didn't address the need at center. Clearly, Utah didn't play with a traditional-style center last season, until Mehmet Okur went down in the playoffs. Kyrylo Fesenko is that traditional center, and he played well in the playoffs.

Fesenko is a free agent, and the thinking is now that it's come down to Fesenko or Matthews for the Jazz. They have to decide. It's not going to be both of them. They are sitting at the luxury tax line, so signing either Fesenko or Matthews is going to take them over that mark. They can keep Fesenko and not go as deep into tax land, so that could be the more attractive option for them at this point. And, it's not as easy to find big men, of course. CONTINUE READING>>>
In my opinion, Utah has their minds made up; they aren't matching Matthews. But, as any team should, they will hold money hostage up until the deadline, then make the official decision.

It looks Matthews may be a Blazer. I wonder who plan b is, that MB referred to ??
I still think Williams and Matthews are similar players. Matthews is bigger, more 2/3, where Williams is 1/2 ??  Down the road it may be a good thing. We are stocked in case of injury.
Matthews is what the team needs. Since we didnt get Raja or Stevie. :(
    We'll see.

I wonder how long it will take for it to become official?
I love his comments in the interview with AOL though. He's going to be ticked off playing against the Jazz, which is something we need considering they swept us pretty handily last season.

I know everyone likes to forget the past, and think Babbit's going to be the exception, but we all know Mcmillan hates to play rookies. Mathews is going to take Martell and Rudy's minutes, it's not going to be tough to find minutes for him I think.

I have enjoyed all the talk about how this hurts Utah. After the last couple of weeks I am not worried about how Utah is going to do. I being a Utah fan have to say, signing Raja Bell over Matthews is a little better of a deal. Also adding Al Jeffersen to the roster. Not to mention Deron Williams. Need I say more! Sorry but I believe the Jazz are better than last year. You know what that means for the division. #1 Jazz, #2 Denver. Is there any buddy else in our division? Have fun with little Matthews. He worked great in Sloans system, I don't know about Nate's system??? Good luck

Excuse me blazer fans, I'll take this one,

Keep enjoying, Bell may turn out to be a decent pickup for the short term, he's a veteran on old legs, and if he can stay on the court injury free until the playoffs come around he may be a good help defensively and as a shooter if all the new additions can gain some team chemistry. It's contracts like the one Jefferson has, that makes contracts like the one Mathews has understandable. It's going to be a tough division once again, and while I can't put Utah as the number 1, I am sure  be entertaining to watch and we wish you the best of luck in this season, in the front office in seasons to come to with offering qualifying offers to your free agents before other teams can, and most importantly we wish you luck with retaining a perenial disgruntled Deron Williams as he watches 4 former teamates thrive in two contender systems, with the blazers and bulls.

Wesley Matthews still on track to become a Blazer
    From Quick-
“It should be done any time now,’’ Young said of Bell’s physical. “I’m 98 percent sure everything will work out and Wesley will be a Trail Blazer. I still haven’t heard from Utah, and I talked to (Blazers scout) Chad Buchanan last night and he hadn’t heard anything either, so it’s still up in the air, but it’s looking like Wesely in Portland is going to be the case.’’

When do we get the final official word that he is Blazer ?  His youth , and winning over Sloan make me believe he was the right choice for the Blazers.

Wesley is officially a Trail Blazer, should hear more news later tonight or tomorrow morning.

    From The Columbian-
Guard Wesley Matthews has joined the Portland Trail Blazers.

As expected, Utah did not match the Blazers' restricted free agent offer sheet to Matthews.

Portland is in the process of working out the final contract details with Matthews. But the deal is basically 100-percent done, and Matthews should officially be a Blazer by this evening.
