I just read on Hoopshype that Toronto is really interested in Ryan Gomes. What is a realistic expectation here? It stated that Portland has to either waive him or trade him by 2 pm today or keep him. What could we get? Is there a possibility of getting Jose "Caveman" Calderon for Gomes and Bayless? Would that be a deal beneficial to Portland? Maybe by having Calderon come off the bench might make Rudy more committed to staying in Portland and actually playing for his salary. Maybe we move Rudy and Gomes to Toronto for Calderon and someone? What is a possibility?

If we thought Sergio's defense was awful, we'll go nuts watching Calderon out there. He was a hit name 2 years ago, but never took that "next step" you'd like to see young players take. I really don't like the idea of trading Bayless, a player who is aggressive on both ends of the court for Calderon who is soft and prefers to shoot jump shots.

    Here is Toronto's Salaries:
I wouldn't touch Jose's contract with a 10 ft. pole. 3 years and over 30 million remaining? No dice. Honestly, outside of Bosh or a first round pick, Toronto has nothing of value. I like Jarrett Jack, but we already have 4 point guards on the roster.

I've heard Michael Beasley's name pop up from time to time and this leads me to believe Miami would be presser hard for Gomes:

    From Chad Ford:

chadfordinsider Miami has $43.7 million to sign free agents. Need $49.5 million to sign Wade, Bosh and & Bron to max. Losing Beasley ($4.9) gets them close

I'd love to go after Beasley and give him a change of scenery but if Miami ends up signing 3 MAX guys, I don't think I could live with the fact we helped them achieve that goal :D !

We have a lot of flexible with our trades.14 ish million to be exact and some. So there are a lot of possibilities out there, just got to find the right now. So outside of LeBron, D-Wade and maybe even Chris Bosh everyone is possible.

i still think portland should go after reddick, hes a shooter, which nate wants and i think he'd be an uprgrade over rudy, or it might be even, defense doesnt seem to be really strong with either.

Why don't we talk about a low post player who could get us 15-20 points in the paint consistently. I remember the last two seasons every commentator said We needed to get easy baskets in the paint, I agreed with this and thought we needed to get a good low post player. I know we have oden and LA but we have had them and the problem will remain if we don't get a good low post player. I want oden to be this and hope he will, but I would like some insurance in another player, Boozer maybe or david lee? I know nate wants shooters, but in my humble opinion the inside game is the weakness on our team. A good or very good power forward would strengthen our team.

Except towards the end of last season points in the paint became our strong point and shooting became our weakness.

What can we realistically get to  not mess with chemistry, give us an outside shooter ,  decent defender and someone who proved he can co-exist in a back court with Roy   ??

    Steve Blake !! ;)

True, but the trend with our team is we default for the jumper and when this isn't working we struggle to score. Bayless was the reason we got a little more points in the paint with his attacking the basket. still I think It would be good to get a decent low post player.

Agreed Kenny. And esp with KP gone, I think there went any chance Portland would look to bring back Blake or Outlaw, because those were "KP guys", players he had groomed and grown a relationship with.

It looks like Miami is dangling Beasely as sign and trade bait for Bosh, which is why they turned down Minnesota's offer for Gomes.

Our roster is extremely crowded right now (15 players) and that is without even considering if Juwan comes back.  I have no clue who we should go after in free agency, maybe no one at all and try to focus our attention on a consolidation trade or a sign and trade. We shouldn't need a shooter after we acquired Babbitt and a backup 2 guard isn't needed since we still have Rudy and drafted Williams. The only type of player I could think of to go after with the MLE would be a banger at the PF position. Unfortunately, this FA class is not littered with this type of player.

True, I'm looking forward to babbitt coming off the bench and being that consistent high percentage shooter nate likes. With such a crowed team and crowed with 1-3 rd year players, do you think we could unload some of our young talent to get one decent Power forward and if so who would you like to see? I know you said that this free agent class isn't littered with this type of player, but can you see anyone on the horizon?

I'm not so fast to assume that Mills or Howard will have roster spots with the Blazers next season.  If that Johnson rookie doesnt take the same path as Telfair/Jack/Green/Chacho and Mills, I will be suprised.
If it took Bayless 2 years to crack the rotation, why will Williams be different ? Nate is still the coach.

Dante and Jeff both need minutes at the back up pf, and both bang.

Our weakness is a back up pg  imo, Bayless can back up Roy with Rudy being a question mark. And take some of the minutes Roy is over played during the season, which makes nagging injuries more likely.

But I guess now Blake is one of "KP's Guys "   All this time I thought he was Nates guy.  LOL !!

I took another long look at the 2010 free agency list and the only banger power forward on that list was Luis Scola, but he won't come here to be a backup and he's restricted anyways, meaning Houston can match any offer. My man crush, Carl Landry, won't be available until 2011. I mean, there is no one out there. Not even a Brandon Bass type. With the roster the way it is right now, I'd be surprised if we signed anybody. My best guess is we are looking at two things to finish off this team: One, a consolidation trade along the same lines as the ones which were reported for CP3 or Tony Parker and two, a sign and trade with one of the unrestricted free agents.

I think either scenario is an end to the same means; getting Brandon Roy a legitimate 2nd Star to play along side of him. By process of elimination, I think we could be targeting a point guard or power forward, because we already have Oden and Camby at center and Dwight Howard isn't walking through that door, B-Roy has the 2 guard on lockdown, and the team is extremely high on Batum, as they should be. Realistically, the only SF's I could see being better than Batum this year are Durant, James, and Anthony and like Dwight, the only time they'll be in town is to play the Trail Blazers. Again, this is only my opinion. I read the same blogs, twitter posts, and articles as you guys do.

Different time and different situations. When Bayless was a rook, we already had 2 guys at the point guard who we thought were better for the team at that time in Sergio and Blake. Then Andre came in and Bayless was pushed back down to 3rd on the depth chart.
Granted, if the roster stands as it is for training camp, I agree that Elliot won't see too much time behind Rudy and Roy, but if a spot opens up, he'll be next in line, just like JB was. now, I'm not saying Elliot is going to get crazy minutes, because he can't behind a superstar like Roy, but I don't think 8-10 minutes an ight is out of the question if he earns it in practice.

Jerryd proved to me during the playoffs, he is our best reserve guard. Whether he takes over for Roy at the 2or gives Andre a breather at the point, he's the 3rd guard of a 3 guard rotation if the season started today. Now Rudy could come back and have a fantastic training camp and that idea all goes for not, but as it stands, Miller/Roy/JB are the rotation at the 2 guard spots.

That scenario works fine as long as no one gets injured or in foul trouble, and Rudy is out of his funk next season.  I am not so optimistic that an entire season /playoffs go by and no guard is injured, or that Rudy comes back new and improved.

Imo, there is no way Chacho was better than Bayless at any point.

Bringing Blake back has nothing to do with my opinion of Bayless.  I truly believe Roy plays too many minutes, and it's a long season.
After watching the pg musical chairs that has gone on for the last seasons, and watching the Phoenix series, I would bring back a pg Nate and Roy both trust as a back up, who offers something different than Miller.
I prefer Bayless off the ball on offense  and on the ball on defense. I really like Williams, and hope he survives like Bayless has. Miller is not getting younger.
I'm not a fan of any guard having to be labeled to fit in as a pg or sg, what matters with any new guard will ultimatly be how they play with Roy.
I'm not a huge Blake fan, which makes me more convinced he is the best free agent available for the Blazers to take the next step into next season.  Blake has come to the top of my list in every category required for a free agent.

But , I was SERIOUSLY  wrong about the KP situation :(,  I could be off base about the guards too.  Just my opinion.

AMEN!!! I was hoping someone would point that out. Even if he was Rudy's broseph, he was awful and Bayless should have been the backup from Day 1. In the past, I would have agreed with you Kim that no rookie guard would be getting any playing time, but with the rumors swirling around that Nate is bringing in a new staff, I think he is going to change some of his ways and lighten up a bit. I heard Demopolus was one of the guys who was really a stickler about turnovers which could be why a lot of the young'ns didn't play.

Finally, Blake is a good backup player and he does fit in nicely with Roy. No argument there. But, with his arrival or welcome back, whatever, it would give us too many guys who need minutes. Bayless has been extremely patient and if Blake comes back, I could see him wanting out. Rudy already wants out because he doesn't see enough minutes (although he got them and doesn't deserve them) and Andre doesn't want to have to look over his shoulder constantly with Blake on the bench. I know we had a ton of injuries this past year, but it was a fluke. While I think contingency plans should always be in order, I wouldn't want to plan for that many injuries happening again, because if they don't (which is the most likely scenario), we'll have a roster full of disgruntled guys who just want to play and when they get on the court they'll be under performing due to not having any sort of rhythm whatsoever. I say if we get hit hard with injuries again next year, so be it..but plan like it's going to be normal season with few setbacks.

Not sure turnovers and Demopolus are the reason rookie pgs get no play. I remember Nate in his day, and when GP came in as rookie and started......
So in addition to Howard coaching Dante and Jeff, I want GP to coach Bayless and Williams. This team is a healthy center, and perimeter defense away from rings.  If we get a back court that defends like GP and Nate did, it's on !!!

Bring in Chris Paul and you are close haha...that's like winning the lottery at this point.

I'm really starting to think it's safe to say that both Pryz and Miller (as much as I love both of them) wont be in a trail blazer uniform past February's trade deadline. I'd rather prefer it to be this off-season, so chemistry wont be too much of a problem.

I think we are targeting PGs mainly this off-season...mainly for an upgrade. Andre Miller is a tier 2 point guard in this league in my mind and I believe we are trying to get one of those tier 1s.

I think the foundation is laid for the Blazers to make a charge at the WCF, but still have a few strings to shore up before doing so. The core of Roy/Batum/Oden/Aldridge is legit and if Oden comes back healthy, its a whole new ball game.
