Australia defeated world no.1 Argentina 90-72  with Patrick Mills in devastating form, nailing 32 points, and giving off four assists and collecting five rebounds.

Mills exposed the Argentinian's with his blistering pace and silky skills, the Argentinian's unable to contain the excitement machine.

Mills stole the show early for Australia, with nine points and amazing efficiency: 3 from 3 from the field and 2 from 2 three-point conversion.

Australia fired up in the second quarter and went on a 10-point run before Argentina got its first basket after quarter-time.

After trading blows for most of the quarter, Mills turned on the magic in the minutes leading up to half-time.

Mills posted 13 points including back-to-back three-point baskets to stretch the Boomers' lead. He was also handy around the court with his lightning pace and brilliant skill finishing the first half with 21 points.

The visitors appeared troubled by Australia's physical attack and their go-to man Romano was too busy keeping up with Mills to trouble the Boomers on the score board.

    Australia 90 (Mills 32, Newley 14, Markovic 9, Loughton 9)
Argentina 72 (Romano 19, De Los Santos 13, Aguerre 10)

It's a sad shame the Portland Trailblazers have no idea what was sitting on their bench. Looking at their new draft picks I'd say they have made their mind up in looking at other guards.  With the world championships only a few weeks away I'd hate to be a Trailblazer fan watching  Patty pull apart international teams, only to realize you let him slip by.  Wrong Time, Wrong Team.

Mills and Juwan Howard are the only two Blazers that CONSISTENTLY indulged the Blazer fans seeking autographs and brief conversation after games last season.  First class guy off the court as well.

and to think, we could have gone into the season with Roy and Miller as the starting guards, Bayless backing up both, and bringing Patrick along to gain experience. the OP is correct: it's a shame the blazers don't know what they have siting on their bench.

Thanks for the update! I wouldn't assume that Patty's days in Portland are numbered just because the team drafted Elliot Williams and Armon Johnson.

And not to take anything away from Patty's performance, but the Argentinian team Australian has been playing against in the Boomers World Challenge is not really the Argentinean team ranked No. 1 by FIBA. No Scola, no Delfino, no Oberto, no Nocioni. Patty should be dominating.

I agree. However, he did play well against US in the Olympics as well. Portland knows what they have in Patty Mills, the reality is that he needs to show that consistency in a Blazer uniform. He goes to the D-League and is unguardable. Then he plays an OK game against Golden State? I think the Blazers know his potential, but he needs to put it to use in the practice facility.

RCR nailed it. Patty shows flashes of brilliance but like all young players, he needs to be more consistent.

I agree that the Argentinian team was not full of it's NBA quality stars.  They appeared to be more of a next generation type team that will be playing for Argentina, likewise Australia was missing Bogut, Andersen (Rockets), Alek Maric - Euroleague Allstar center and 2-3 other players who will be first choice picks for the Aussie team.  Patty will have the opportunity to lead Australia at the point guard position as a 21 year old against the worlds best at the World Championships; in Beijing he was our backup pg at 19 years of age.  This is the kind of experience that will prove to be invaluable to Patty's development as a team leader in high stakes basketball, albeit for a guy that is left to sit out most games and when the game is all but finished with is given junk time.  It's interesting that basketball followers mention that he was too inconsistent - how much consistency can you show in the last 3 mins of a game?  I watched as many games as I could where Patty was given game time.  He is the type of guy that loves to compete, however when your playing in junk time how can you give a true evaluation of where he sits in the Blazers team or the NBA for that matter.

All I can say is that as a longtime Australian basketball tragic, I and 20 million other Aussies see Patty's value.  Come the World Championships we will see if the rest of the basketball world will see it too.

Casey as a side note, Argentina had five of its NBA listed players when Australia played them at the Beijing Olympics.  In that game Patty Mills scored an individual tournament high of 22 points, not bad for a 19 year old back up point guard that most Australians had never heard of.

I'm a big Patty supporter, and I think the combination of being a rookie and having an early injury seriously hurt his chances of winning PT last year. But the fact remains that if Patty has the ability, he'll find his way onto the court. The team stuck with Patty last year instead of taking a guy like Ime or Jarron Collins, so the interest is there on our side. Now it's time for Patty to go out and prove he belongs above guys like Elliot Williams and Armon Johnson on the depth chart.

On top of that, he got max time against Golden State and go torched by their rookie guard. He needs to step up in the practice facility and he will get his chance in the games.

I agree Casey, hopefully he has an excellent worlds tournament and then this translates over to some playing time at Portland, or at the very least he gets interest from other NBA teams that are looking at a back up point guard and then the Blazers could use him in a packaged trade option; seeing as the Blazers seem to have more guards than cheerleaders. :0  I haven't heard if he is going back to the U.S. to play Summer league - you may have the answer to that one.  I know one thing for sure and that is if Patty does well at the Blazers you will sell a lot of Blazer singlets Downunder - Patty is more popular than Bogut/Andersen/Jawai combined, the last two if your not sure are on NBA lists.

Having watched the 3 game series against Argentina Patty was solid in the first 2 games, averaging 15 points and a handfull of assists in both games.  He wasn't utalised as much time wise and in the scoring structure due to the score difference in the first game and Australia's coaching staff; Australia's head coach is Brett Brown - Assistant coach at San Antonio Spurs, using the 2 game to determine which players to add to our final National team squad.  I got to say though in the third and final game mentioned above, it was a physical game that at several points the Argentinians were if front.  The one thing that really stood out were Patty's ability to stand up and take the big shots when the game was in the balance and backed it up with relentless defensive pressure on the taller Argentine point guards, using his speed and lack of size to draw the referee's into calling offensive charge's against Argentina.  All round impressive effort.

If Australia move through to the 2nd round at the FIBA worlds, we will probably meet the USA.  I'm hoping this happens, not just so I can add another Aus vs USA basketball tape to the collection, but more for the tantalising match up of Patty vs the best U.S NBA guards, last time he hit 20 points against Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and Jason Kidd. Watch this space.....

If by max time, do you mean the 13 minutes he played against the Golden State warriors on the 04/14/2010.  In his massive 13 minutes he scored 11 points at .50 scoring percentage and his 3pt attempt % was 0.66.  The Golden State rookie - Stephen Curry had 42 points in 48 minutes.  I'd say he burnt the whole Blazer guard rotation, or are you going to selectively single out one player during his meager 13 minutes on court and blame it all on Patty......

I'd say giveing Patty more court time instead of undermining his desire to improve on the practise court would be more relevant don't you.  Considering that Stephen Curry played "max time" 80 games for the season and averaged 36 minutes per game compared to Mills  "max time" 10 games at an average of 3 minutes a game.  What a sledge!

In a NIT college basketball showdown Patty Mills's St Mary's Gaels' played against Stephen Curry's Davidson team on the 24 of March 2009.  In that game Mills had 23 points and 10 assists while leading Saint Mary’s into the NIT quarterfinals with an 80-68 victory. Curry had 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Patty was a year younger and the difference here is Patty was credited with leading his team to victory over a late finishing Davidson team.  At this stage in their basketball careers Curry was the national scoring leader and a fantastic basketballer.  The difference between the two in the last season was one player got REAL max time in 80 games while the other was used as insurance on the backup's backup point guard, yet expected to perform at the same level with no real game time experience.
But hey ,when you need to critique some one don't let the facts get in your way.

don't worry patty will be sent to San antonio in exchange for another point guard without a good jump shot, tony parker, except this new one will also be injury prone because he gets a majority of his shots in the lane, so could be a downgrade from andre miller.
