The Knicks have engaged in trade discussions with the Portland Trail Blazers in hopes of prying guard Rudy Fernandez, according to an N.B.A. executive.

In the past, Fernandez has voiced displeasure over his role with Portland. The Knicks are on the verge of a free agency they hope will vastly restock their team and have long been interested in Fernandez.

If the talks proceed, the Knicks will most likely part with Wilson Chandler or Toney Douglas.

Another league executive said Fernandez was available but Portland was hoping to land a draft selection with any trade that he is involved in. As of now, the Knicks hold only the 38th and 39th picks, in the second round.

Fernandez averaged 8.1 points and 2.6 rebounds last season.

The Spanish news site Marca recently reported that Fernandez had signed a three-year deal with Real Madrid, pending a buyout from the Trail Blazers. Fernandez denied the report in an article by Sportando, saying: “I laughed when I read the news on Marca. I am still a Portland Trail Blazers player.”

It would be a great system to play in for Rudy under Coach D'Antoni, but Toney Douglas does nothing for us that Bayless doesn't and Chandler, while good, would create another logjam, this time at the SF position. They don't have any picks, so unless they purchase Miani's #18, I don't see how they are the best trading partner. Mayeb a 3 team deal would have to be involved? What do you think? Time for Rudy to go or hold out for one last season and see what he does?

The smoke keeps getting thicker. Pass on Douglas, and you would have to convince me that Chandler was an improvement over Martell to part with Rudy....

Well Chandler is better than Martell overall. Marty is a better defender but Chandler can score (15 ppg average over 2 years).

Kenny- You can't keep a player who does not want to be here. He'll be a lock room cancer.

I want Rudy gone as much as anyone on these boards, but I wouldn't budge on moving him unless we at least get a mid 1st round pick out of it. Wilson Chandler would be a great replacement if we had to move Batum in a CP3 trade though.

I love what Rudy was his rookie season, he will never be that player again for the Blazers because he has made up his mind and he is bitter. He will play great for another team where he can start, you can expect that. Everyone will call him another Drazen Petrovic, another Jermaine O'Neal, but the reality is that his mind is made up and he will never be the player he was two seasons ago here in Portland. You had better get something decent in return though.

From Jason Quick on the BFT-

High-ranking source: Blazers have better deals for Fernandez than what NYK are offering. Rudy to NYC won't happen
Seems like Rudy is being heavily shopped and has the highest potential of being dealt on draft day of any Blazer. I wonder, outside of the Toronto rumor, are the other "better" deals out there. Glad the NYK rumors are false, because the Knicks are a bad trading partner for us.

Nah uhhh a defensive center, a backup big either position I don''t care, an experienced wing, without having to give up any draft picks. I''d probably do this but I just don''t know for sure.

Rebounds are over rated and so is JJ

I completely agree he could be that voice on the court we need. Lamarcus just isn''t that guy and Damian can learn some on court leadership from him. A small lineup when we need a score bad of Dame, Wes, Paul, Nic, and Lamarcus would be potent.

Howard is great but his back injury and shoulder issues this year were troubling.

I mean Damian might have not even been in the same area as them when it happened. Innocent until proven guilty

I would agree Harris seems more dynamic but Harkless looks pretty good as well.
