The rumor mill is really churning out the ... rumors today. The latest from Yahoo! Sports:

The Portland Trail Blazers have targeted University of Memphis guard Elliot Williams and are actively working to get an additional first-round pick in the 20s to draft him, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Without another pick in the late first round, Portland will have to decide whether it wants to use the 22nd selection on Williams. The Blazers would prefer to use No. 22 on a different player, but don’t believe Williams will be available when they select again at No. 34.

I said during our live chat today with Mike Rice that I had no idea who Elliot Williams was. If Yahoo! is to be believed, maybe I should do some research on the guy.

    What do ya'll think?

Also wanted to mention that according to the Yahoo! report Williams worked out for the Blazers. That must have been somewhere other than Portland, because he was not a part of any of the workout we were allowed to attend at the practice facility.

    NBADraft.Net Profile-

     NBA Comparison: Larry Hughes/Michael Dickerson

Strengths: Versatile southpaw guard with very good athleticism ... At 6'4 with long arms, has the size and length to play either guard position ... Displays a powerful burst to the basket with his natural lefty dribble ... Has a quick first step and long, easy strides ... Thrives in the open court where he can utilize his speed and attack in space ... Finishes extremely well in traffic, able to contort his body and get shots off at odd angles ...

Weaknesses: Despite a good looking jumper, is not comfortable with his shot yet ... Shot 25% from three and 50% from the stripe as a frosh ... Not a catch-and-shoot guy, preferring to walk into his shot with a few habit dribbles ... Shoots a layup or three pointer with very little in between - has not put his midrange game to much use ... His offensive game is lefty dominant. Drives are almost all to his left, and if he starts out right will usually spin back to his left ...

Call me crazy, but I'm not a fan of adding a player compared to Larry Hughes. Also, spending $5 million is a HUGE chunk of change to pay for the chance to draft this kid (2 million to get to #34, then an additional $3 million to move up again, if that was the case). I do like the fact he likes to attack the basket, but there are other players I'd much rather have in this draft at that spot in the draft.

The numbers definitely don't match up. However, we have also seen Paul Allen fall in love with this player before (Darius Miles). I think it is a diversion tactic. Look one way while something else is happening. Why take this guy when you have Bayless? Why take this guy when you can package two first round picks for a higher pick. Infact, that is more what I see happening. Somebody wants this kid and Kevin Seraphin. Blazers want to move up. Who needs an attack player guard and a PF? New Jersey?

    Williams is a shooting guard.
I too believe this is a smokescreen though. Someone is putting rumors out there to divert their attention elsewhere. Who really are we targeting? I think only KP and his scouts know that one, no matter what "sources" are putting out there.

Why're Blazers aiming for Williams, they still have rights Koponen. He can play SG  also. Petteri Koponen - Blazers

I'm siding with Koponen for life on this one. Red rover, red rover bring Petteri right over.

As for PG targets under Kevin, I can't recall any but Petteri. Chad Buchanan was pretty adamant the other day about Bayless being the back up point, so this has me a bit twisted.

I think the point is to have everyone except who matters twisted for the next day. I got the impression from reading about Williams he was a pg, I still don't think Nate likes any rookie guards ;)
Agree 100% on bring  PK over, he has to learn sometime !!

    From Chad Ford-

Blazers most likely to take Williams
"According to agent Thad Foucher, Williams has worked out recently for Portland, Boston and Houston. Foucher said that Williams just completed a physical and that he was sending the results to all 30 teams in the league prior to the draft. While all of this could certainly be 'agent spin' by Foucher, these are the clearest statements we've received on Williams so far. Sources say that of the teams that have worked out Williams, the Blazers are the most likely to take him. The question is where? They could get him with the No. 22 pick or they could take a gamble and hope he's on the board with the No. 34 pick."
Either this is the smokescreen of the century or we really dig this kid. If we take him, one has got to wonder what is up with Rudy or Martell, because the backcourt just got a little more crowded.

I still think KP's job being on the line is still the best smokescreen so far.
I'm not feeling a sg who shoots 25% from 3, and 50% from the free throw line??  The impression I got is that he is a pg trapped in a shooting guards body, and how easy is a dominant lefty to guard ?

    What has PK's  shooting % been ??

I'm baffled by the targeting of Williams as well, but maybe the coaches feel there is a lot of upside to his game. He was a 5* recruit of of high school and would have played on Duke's national championship team this year had he not had to transfer to Memphis to be closer to his ill mother. Outside of a few picks, I generally trust the Blazers scouts in who they like in the draft.

Trade rights to kostas Papanikolau and 2 2nds for the 13th pick. If mavs are planning on drafting an international player to stash, we might as well give kostas to mavs, because theyre trying to clear space to get dh12 or cp3 to play for them. The...
