I have been going through all the draft info and reading all the posts, it seems that a person could spend all day sorting through the different angles and still not have a clue as to what would be best. I decided that I wanted to ask all you Blazer fans a question...

Given the team that the Blazers have, and as far as I can see, we are lacking 1 or maybe 2 key pieces to take us all the way.... Should the Blazers really spend all the money and hopes on a draft pick to fill the void? or should we concentrate on a seasoned player. We have been in the "rebuilding" process for quite a few years now. How many more do we have before we finally say, "Ok, this is the team we will concentrate on". Maybe I am just crazy and it will never happen like that. I guess I remember thinking those thoughts at the beginning of this year, and Oh yeah, at the beginning of last year as well.

I love the Blazers and will never turn my back on them. I will support them through thick and thin. I just am starting to think that we should concentrate more on a seasoned player who can come in and produce immediately instead of taking another chance.

Maybe I am just way out in left field, if so, please let me know. I, however, think that there are good points to both sides of the argument. Please let me know what you think.

No matter what happens, the summer will pass and I will be at the front doors come October/November. I will be wearing my red and black colors and yelling until I can not speak. Thank you Blazers---You guys should be very proud of yourselves BECAUSE WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!

I don't think many are suggesting we build through the draft, rather just use our picks wisely to help build a struggling bench. We don't have any cap space, so the best seasoned player we get will have to be of the mid-level exception quality.  Adding a shooter, remaining healthy, and learning how to play with the big fella are the three keys to glory for the 2011 Trail Blazers.

Please (try to)  explain mid-level exception to me.  Contracts/Salary cap is a foreign language .
I would add improving perimeter defense to Hawes keys to 2011.
Here I go again, Blake is a seasoned shooter, and a good defender , already knows Nates sytem.  ;)

The mid-level exception is a specified amount of money each team OVER the salary cap gets to spend on free agents each offseason.  The reason teams over the salary cap get this exception is because there are plenty of free agents each summer and not all are either worthy of the maximum contract and only a handful of teams each off-season actually have cap space to use. So if there was no MLE, there would be a lot of unemployed ball-players. The amount of money differentiates from year to year. Last year it was $5.8 million and it is expected to rise to $6 million this summer. So in essence, we have $6 million to sign on any player who is a free agent. You can split it in as many ways as possible as long as you don't exceed the roster limit of 15 or the amount of the MLE.

    Here are the legal terms:

MID-LEVEL SALARY EXCEPTION -- This exception allows a team to sign any free agent to a contract equal to the average salary, even if they are over the cap (see question number 24 for the definition of "average salary." Also note that for 2005-06 they used a defined figure of $5 million). This exception may be split and given to multiple players. It may be used for contracts of up to five years in length, and raises are limited to 8% of the salary in the first year of the contract. Signing a player to a multi-year contract does not affect a team's ability to use this exception every year. For example, a team can sign a player to a five-year contract using this exception and still use the exception the following year to sign another player. Also see question number 20 for more information on the availability and use of this exception.

If the player is a restricted free agent with one or two years of service and receives an offer sheet from a new team, the player's prior team may use the Mid-Level exception to match the offer sheet (see question number 36 for restricted free agency).

Here are the actual values of this exception for each season. Note that since this exception is based on the average player salary, the actual value of this exception is not determined until the start of the free agent signing period.

    No prob!
Last year the Lakers were able to sign Artest for the MLE, so if there is a player who really wants to come here, they may take a pay cut. Also, with the MLE rising each year, its almost silly to try to get under the salary cap to sign free agents unless you can ge tway under like the Knicks and Nets are.

So how much did Blake make last season?  I'm really not as big of a Blake fan as I sound, I'm just a firm believer in not bringing in a new pg with Nate as coach,  this close to championshop run ;)

sign Iggy for 8-9M, Batum at the two, and Wesley off the bench! Draft Steven Adams (who loves contact, grew up playing rug-bee). Sounds NICE!

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
