With the Draft just nearly 3 weeks away, the workout schedule is starting to heat up. Yesterday, Blazers brass brought in 6 potential draftees to check them out live and in person. The prospects were as follows:

Tory Jackson, Guard (Notre Dame); Profile

    Andy Rautins
, Guard (Syracuse); Draft Express Profile

    Ryan Thompson
, Guard (Rider); Draft Express Profile

    Marqus Blakely
, Forward (Vermont); Draft Express Profile

    Landry Fields
, Forward (Stanford); Draft Express Profile

    Tyren Johnson

Not the biggest names in the 2010 draft class, but certainly, talent can be found anywhere and everywhere. Our own Terry Porter was from Wisconsin Stevens-Points, a NAIA scool, similar in size to that of OIT down in Klamath Falls and players such as Ben Wallace, Anthony Morrow, and Marquise Daniels went undrafted and made names out of themselves.

None of the above players are in Draft Express' latest mock draft, but that doesn't mean one couldn't sneak into the 2nd round. Most likely, I think Portland is looking for players to help fill out their summer league roster. Meaning, they don't have to purchase another draft pick, rather just sign them to a summer contract and see how they handle playing against summer league competition. In the pas, the Summer League has been good at finding gems for the Blazers as they brought in undrafted big man Steven hill a few years back and he ended up making the roster for a while as insurance to our other centers.

Of the 6 players, I have only seen Fields and Rautins play. I haven't been too terrible impressed by Fields, because I'm not sure he has that one niche in his game to keep him around in the league, whereas Rautins does, which is shooting the ball from deep. At this point in his career, I liken him to a poor man's JJ Reddick, as he isn't quite the shooter JJ is (but who really is?) and doesn't have the array of ways to score other than jump shots. Rautins does have a flair for the dramatic, and is known for his clutch shooting and he has done so at the highest of levels, the Big East. I know Ryan Thompson is the younger brother of Kings forward Jason Thompson, so there could be a nice bloodline there, but other than that, I'll have to trust Blazers management to make the right decisions in regards to these six players.

I could see the team trading its first round pick this year for someone, and maybe pick up another second rounder (high second rounder). We got some nice talented picks in DC and Jeff last draft so it could be a option.

Rautins' is going to have to show that he can do more than shoot 3s, his basketball IQ I think is pretty solid for the NBA.

Interesting blog post by Fields giving his take on the competition.

I like the write up on Thompson that he thrived as a team player, thats a thumbs up in my book.

I like most of these players are 4 year college players, pretty solid fundamentals, decent basketball IQs.

Even for a Draft freak like myself, it's hard to get excited about these guys coming into the practice facility for workouts. I heard Rautins didn't look too great and most of these guys look to be future summer league roster fillers.

Really stoked to see how Sanders and Randle perform. I wouldn't be mad at drafting those two guys with our 1st and second round picks. Draft is really starting to heat up now!

Very nice list. Love seeing we're interested in Jerome Randle. He killed my Ducks this year. He's on the shorter side, but he is so quick and he can shoot! He'll definitely be a draft day steal for someone. Also, I wonder if Paul Millsap's brother is as good as the read deal :) !

Tomorrow's crop of prospects isn't the most exciting or jaw-dropping, but I'd really like to see how well Scottie Reynolds does. He, along with Jerome Randle are two of my biggest sleepers in this year's draft and would make for excellent guards in this league. Size isn't everything if you are quick, make good decisions, and can shoot, just as Aaron Brooks has been been able to overcome his smallish stature.

These four players are working out for the Trail Blazers on June 18th:

Aubrey Coleman, Guard (Houston); Draft Express Profile

Jon Scheyer, Guard (Duke); Draft Express Profile

Deon Thompson, Forward (North Carolina); Draft Express Profile

Ludovic Vaty, Forward (France). Draft Express Profile

I know nothing about Vaty and Coleman. Thompson and Scheyer are potential 2nd round picks and each has a niche that could find them a roster spot in the NBA. Scheyer is JJ Reddick-lite and can flat out shoot the ball. I'd actually compare Scheyer to a Steve Blake. He's not going to attack the hoop or wow you with any passes, but he's a smart, 4 year college player who can shoot the lights out. Thompson still needs to add weight to his frame, but he's a big, lively body and those still needed in this league.

A little disappointed with the players we are bringing in for workouts. The majority of them seem to be 2nd round guys. The only 1st round lock we worked out is Larry Sanders. I hope we are trying to fly under the radar on some of these guys we are targeting and hopefully we saw them during the Chicago pre-draft workouts of in the group workouts in Minnesota.

The Saturday group is headlined by Craig Brackins and Sherron Collins. Collins is a big, bruising guard, who played 4 years and won a national title at Kansas. He's not the fastest, nor does he have the best shot, but he has a lot of poise and leadership. If he can improve his jump shot, he could be a 2nd round steal.

Brackins has been floating all around mock drafts this entire year. Once a projected lottery pick, Brackins now would be lucky to just get picked up in the 1st round. He's compared to Channing Frye and Jason Thompson. Meaning, he's a big guy at 6-10, but at 230, he's a light build. He's got a great jump shot but lacks defense and rebounding. He sounds to similar to the forwards we have on the roster.

Out of this upcoming group, only Johnson and Radkowski figure to be drafted. I've never seen either play due to the small schools they play in, which is why I'll be looking forward to seeing video highlights of their draft workouts.

IMO, Raivio is most likely trying out for a summer league spot with the Blazers. I've seen him play since he went to UP, but not one site has a draft profile for him.

Yeah, i wouldn't expect anyone who plays at UP to get drafted...ever. With that said, they were one of the best 3 point shooting teams in the country. They even made it to the tournament which even Jeter couldn't do there. He could be a Steve Kerr type player where he just makes a career out of being planted on the perimeter.

I think Europe is Nik's best bet. I mean, Kerr was an All-American at Arizona if I'm not mistaken and Raivio isn't even close to that level. I'm not sure NR was even the best player on his UP team.

Jon Scheyer does interest me as a free agent pick up if he goes undrafted. Maybe put him on the summer league team and see how he works out? A 4 year starter on a national championship winning team who can shoot the ball, he doesn't sound half-bad!
