In 2009-10, Nate McMillan's Portland Trail Blazers overcame 311 games missed by injury to finish with a 50-32 record and earn its second consecutive trip to the postseason. Eight different Trail Blazers missed at least 15 games due to injury, including six of the eight leading scorers from last season.

McMillan guided the Trail Blazers to 50 wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1999-2000 and 2000-01, and reached the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2002-03.

McMillan became the 15th youngest head coach in NBA history to reach 400 wins with a March 12 win at Sacramento. Fifteen days later, he earned his 191st win in Portland, passing Mike Dunleavy for third among all-time Trail Blazers head coaches.

McMillan finished third in this year's Coach of the Year voting.

McMillan is 12-16 overall in four postseason appearances, including a 4-8 record with Portland.

Stay. The Henry Abbott piece really sums it all up.
    Snippet-
I know, Portland's style of play is a little boring. It seems like it would be sexy and fun to have [insert name here] coaching this team. And there is that one coaching decision that sticks in your mind ... what was Nate McMillan thinking?

People see things that go wrong. They see a substitution pattern, a matchup, some bad clock management or a blown possession, and think what in the hell is wrong with this coach?

It is almost a rite among sports fans. They see an X and O thing they could imagine going better, and then they blame the coach.

    But that's a crock.

That's no way to judge a coach.

Point 1: This may seem surprising, but there really is not basketball knowledge that is common to fans but alien to NBA head coaches. As much as it may seem the coach is too oblivious or stupid to notice whatever you're seeing, isn't it far more likely that there's more to the story than you can realize from your couch? Imagine if people were watching you work on TV. The reasons behind a lot of what you do are probably subtle. The same is true here. Instead of imagining how a certain play could have gone better, look at the big picture: Do things generally work well for this team?
Point 2: So much of the action on the court is not dictated by the coach.
Point 3: If you find some coach who get that one play right, what else would you lose?

The way to judge a coach is not to obsess over this or that little thing, but to look around the franchise and ask: Are the basketball players well-led? Do they give great effort at all times? Are the offense and defense generally efficient? Are the players on the roster well-deployed? Do the players believe in the coach as their leader? Is the staff on the same page?

The answer to all of those questions is hell yes when it comes to Nate McMillan.

One last point: I'm starting to question the idea of firing coaches every few years anyway. Because you know which coach McMillan reminds me of, more than anyone? Jerry Sloan. And I think it's kind of a beautiful thing that they have going on in Utah. Everybody knows the organization has the coach's back. There's no point in lobbying to have him fired. You trade the excitement of that next great coach who might be around the corner for the foundation of a strong organization. That's a good deal.

It's going to be an ugly scene over there. Nate, for reasons that are inexplicable, seems to have a lot of detractors, especially among the OregonLive forumites.

Nate won be over this season with the way he help will this team to always keep clawing and never giving in to adversity. I still think there is room for improvement from him though. The ball movement/player movement needs to be much more crisper, similar to the Jazz and we can not keep giving away games in the 4th by going to isolations for the last 4-5 minutes of the game. NBA defenses are too good and too smart to let isos beat them time and time again. The best player in the world, LeBron James, wasn't even able to do so, so we need to stay in attack mode for longer periods of the game.

Stay, and I'm glad he didnt win COY,  the winners havent gone on to have very good luck !
I dont even read O-live anymore, the " fans " are almost as bad as some of the writers.  To everyone who blames Nate for losses, remember he cant make shots, or defend for the players.
Imo, Nate in his prime would have been all over Jason Richardson, and we would have seen a different outcome ;)

Stay. Everyone has room to improve. Last year I thought he could improve his rotation and sub patterns and he did....apparent with his short-handed team.

We had a great offense developing before GO got injured...let's hope it comes back and stays.

    The Sarge.
We should hire Mike Brown as an assistant. He just got canned by Danny Ferry. (I bet that was embarrasing)
But seriously, you never know when Nate's gonna get hurt again. It's good to have backups.

Lot of Nate-Haters over at Oregonlive, but a lot of bashing goes on in those comment sections more negative comments than positive (I mean, BRoy is up to 20% go? really people?...)

Always room for improvement, he does have flashes of Sloan and has his players buying in to his system whether it be rookies to free agents. The guy kept this team winning with a banged up roster and had to really adjust on the fly, gotta give him credit for that.

Only thing I don't like about Nates game plan is that it seems like the players aren't completely certain of there roll. This is caused by the 100's of combinations Nate uses. I'll ignore last year cause of the injuries...but the year before it seemed to be the same issue.

Not DPOY. All American. Player of the year in his conference twice. Past four years, McCollum, Muscala, McCollum, Muscala.

sign Iggy for 8-9M, Batum at the two, and Wesley off the bench! Draft Steven Adams (who loves contact, grew up playing rug-bee). Sounds NICE!

Im not impressed with Gortat. Everyone wants him but he seems mediorcre to me. He is the most realistic option since all it would take is the 10th pick, but I think he is old and declining.
