Last year, Brandon Roy made a point of staying away from basketball until late in the summer. He said he needed to rest his body. And though he never said it, he probably didn't want to chance injury while negotiating a new contract.

This year, Roy has already said he plans to play more in an effort to keep his rhythm going into the 2010-11 season. He wasn't kidding. According to Mike Barrett, Roy is already back on the court.

I stopped by the practice facility last week and was a little surprised to see Brandon Roy in full practice gear on the court shooting. I'm not sure if this was an early start, or just trouble filling the down time. Either way, it reminded me how much I wish we were still playing.

Interesting, no? Guess that knee really is back to normal.

I am loving this news that he is back on the court playing. Different summer regimens work for different players and some need lots of rest, others need to stay in rhythm. Brandon learned last offseason, a ton of rest isn't necessarily the best thing for him and hopefully playing ball in the summer helps him gain a quick start to the season. Also, it just shows how committed he is to this team, the city, the fans, and winning. He truly has a love for the game, something all fans can appreciate.

nice. if this is an early start, it's cool to see he has the motivation and drive to actually do what he has to do to get to the next level and not just talk about it. brandon's a class act. he's nowhere near his potential yet. with his attitude and work ethic he's going to be great.

Well, Roy is already great Jason. He's a borderline Top 10 player and when he's healthy, one of the best closers in the game. Does he still have room to grow? Most definitely. I'd love to see him get even deadlier with his dribble step back mid-range game and get a little more consistent with those free throws. And yes like Kiki23 said, thank goodness for some good news! We can definitely use some!

I love Roy, but I don't think he's top 10 in any statistical catagory the NBA keeps (big part of that is his unselfishness) and his defense can get quite a bit better. There's definately another level, but it seems like hard work and dedication is what will get him there, right?

He was top 10 in scoring I believe, but I don't mean top 10 in stats, just strictly on a list basis.

I mean, what would a Top 10 list look like?

Outside of those top 3, the list is debatable. But when healthy, no doubt Brandon is in the top 10.

He was actually 12th in scoring this year, but I would agree with you that some of the guys ahead of him aren't better players, they just play on crappier teams that they have to score more points for. That list looks pretty good. Just for arguments sake I would throw a few other names in there that might be in the conversation like...

Carmello; Tim Duncan; (Ginobli this year?); Gilbert; Amare; Joe Johnson; Granger; Bosh; Yao; Rondo (based on the playoffs); Kidd. Some of those guys have bigger impacts on games than Brandon does.
Coming up with more room to improve than Brandon... Brandon Jennings; Dereck Rose; Westbrook; Tyreke Evans...

It's such a subjective thing and he's definately in the conversation but he has a lot of room to improve on Defense (as do a bunch of those other guys) and it feels like most of those other guys have the ability to turn it on and take over a game on a consistant basis more than Brandon does. He's still my favorite player and I still think he's going to get better over the next couple of years. I think when it's all over he'll go down as the best Blazer ever.

Melo is a great pure scorer, but we saw he can't lead the Nuggets when Billups was out. Duncan still gets it done, but age considering, he leaned on Manu and Parker more than they did him, JJ is done after that playoff performance in my eyes, I wouldn't take Kidd over Dre, and Bosh probably puts up better stats but couldn't even lead the Raps to a top 8 finish in the East, Granger puts up hallow stats on a poor, poor team.

I'll give you Yao as top 10 when he is healthy. Rondo is another arguable, but would he be so great if he had to lead a team like Roy and wasn't able to play off 3 other great players? Amare is another one who is definitely top 15, but not sure he has the intangibles of a Brandon.

He does have a great shot at going down as the best Trail Blazer ever, but that will all be dependent upon playoff performance and how deep the team goes.

You wouldn't take Kidd over Andre? Kidd had 26 double doubles and 2 triple doubles. Andre had 9 double doubles. This year Kid had almost twice as many rebounds/game and almost twice as many assists/game as Miller. Kidd can shoot 3's... Miller, not so much. Kidd is one of the most well rounded guards to ever play the game with assists points and rebounds. I like Andre, but I'm trying to be objective too. Kidd is old, but he can still play. He's a future hall of famer. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.
