Memphis Open to Sign & Trade With Rudy Gay: Should Portland Listen?

     The Grizzlies could look complete a sign-and-trade involving restricted free agent forward Rudy Gay if they don't re-sign him outright.

    Teams can discuss sign-and-trade scenarios prior to July 1, when the free agent signing period begins, as long as discussions don't include the player(s) involved.

    Memphis hasn't discussed any scenarios, but a sign-and-trade remains an option.

    I'll pass. Gay is a 3 and so is Batum, so unless we're sending back Batum (big mistake) it doesn't really fit. I guess if you can get him for spare parts you do it, but do we really need 3 near MAX guys on the same team with Oden/Batum/Bayless' extensions yet to be worked out, esp with a new CBA about to be implemented? Seems kind of steep to me. Everything Batum brings to the table > Rudy Gay.

    Rudy Gay is exactly what this team is missing. He plays mean, he plays hard, and the dude can straight torch the net. He's never afraid to attack the basket, while his athletic ability and length, serves as problem for his opponent's offensively and defensively.
    Batum's game is rapidly improving, but Rudy's game is already is there.

    Really? I see Rudy Gay as an Outlaw clone only with a better brand name. Maybe it was because he plays in Memphis and isn't used to playing D, but I don't see a whole lot out of his defensive game that makes me go "Wow"

    20 points a game. Rudy Gay averaged 20 points a game, straight up.
    Nah, nah, nah, don't gimme' none of this 19.6 stuff.
    It took Travis two games to average 20 points and 6 boards.

    Who would we give up?  If gay signs he will get at least $10 mil per year, we'd have to give up 3-4 players or a guy like LaMarcus.  I love Rudy Gay, although he needs to work on his defense but just don't think that with our signing Camby we have the cap room to complete a trade.

    Gay also played over 35 minutes a night while Travis was lucky to get 20. Trust me, Gay is Outlaw but with a much, much higher price tag.

    I'd rather bring Travis back, love me some Travis,  but again, that isn't going to address the elephant in the room with Rudy, and the future of the back up 2.

    Agreed. Re-sign Travis with a portion of the MLE would be a much more fiscally responsible decision. Outlaw is going to cost a team, maybe 5-6 million a year while Gay turned down 10 million a year last summer. Travis knows his role, thrives coming off the bench, is a fan favorite, and great in the locker room. U'm not saying Gay isn't good, in fact I wanted to draft him back in 2006, but the price to get him over other similar options would not be the smartest thing to do. Sign Outlaw to fill the void of scorer off the bench and use other assets to shore up other problems on the roster.

    Still not sure bringing Travis back is the right call, just because I like him personally. 
    Dante needs minutes.  Rudy is still the weakest link at this point.

    There's a reason why Outlaw played 20 minutes a night.
    And for your info, Travis averaged a healthy 27 minutes per game in 08-09.
