    Juwan Howard
    Position: F
    Height/Weight: 6-9/250
    NBA experience: 16 seasons
    2009-10 salary: $825,497
Contract status: Signed with Portland as a free agent on Sept. 17, 2009. Howard is an unrestricted free agent.

2009-10: Totaled averages of 6.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 22.4 minutes in 73 games (27 starts) ... Shot 50.9 percent (191-for-375) from the field ... Scored in double figures 16 times and grabbed 10-plus rebounds seven times ... Equaled a season best with 12 rebounds Jan. 30 at Dallas, Jan. 22 at Boston and Dec. 23 at San Antonio ... Grabbed a season-high eight offensive rebounds Jan. 27 vs. Utah ... Tied a season best with 16 points Jan. 25 vs. New Orleans ... Scored a season-high tying 16 points (8-for-11 FG) Jan 4. at L.A. Clippers, his highest total since scoring 20 on April 18, 2007 ... Counted back-to-back double-doubles Dec. 22 at Dallas and Dec. 23 at San Antonio for first time in career since Dec. 27 and Dec. 29, 2006.

No one, not even the man himself, expected Juwan Howard to play in 73 games this season, let alone start in 27 of those games. In his previous two seasons with Dallas (2007-08) and Denver/Charlotte (2008-09), Howard appeared in 92 games (2 starts).

The Trail Blazers signed Howard in the offseason to provide veteran leadership, experience and a locker room presence. But after season-ending injuries to Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla, he became much more than that. Howard was thrust into the starting role at center and the 16-year pro stepped up to the challenge.

For 26 games between Joel Przybilla's injury and the Marcus Camby trade, Howard averaged 7.9 points, 7.0 rebounds in 31 minutes per game. During that time, Howard hit double figures in four straight games (12/30-1/5) for the first time since a five-game stretch March 11-18, 2007.

Portland went 14-12 with the undersized Howard playing heavy minutes at the 5.

I think Juwan is the trickiest of them all. We all love Juwan and what he did for us last season, but I'd like to bring him back this year for his original purpose last year, as a mentor and veteran presence. In the end, it would be awesome if he could find a spot on the coaching staff or somewhere in the organization. Great guy, great player.

As much as I enjoy not having Howard delivering hard fouls to the Blazers. I see similarities in Dante now, and Juwan at Michigan. ( my age is showing )  He is always in the right place, and boxes out better than any rookie I have seen in a long time.  Dante needs minutes.
Sorry Juwan, thank you for everything this season, hope we can keep you on the coaching staff !

Keeping Juwan around is a wise idea. Ideally, you wouldn't want him to play as much in 2010-11 as he did in 2009-10 (no offense Juwan!), but he's certainly worth holding on to. Can still play, good character, veteran. What's not like?

~!@tie breaker@!~ Id like to keep him around for practices and bench support. As long as his staying around isn't going to affect the playing time of our younger guys. Basicly, A veteran practice man in the post for less then $1m? I don't think you can beat that.

Potential out weighs them all are you serious OJ Mayo has more potential than Batum, then you add in what Landry and Barnes provide plus whatever 2 first round picks offer and it is not even close.

Cmeese, actually Nico is kinda aggressive. He is always arguing with the refs. Not in his play though.

You guys know how I feel about that. Thompson would be great, but not for LMA. Your deal is actually pretty solid and has a decent chance of happening compared to others, but Olshey has said LMA ain''t going  anywhere.

Wow some serious high hopes for JJ there.

@Cailin Isn''t a little ironic that the Heat are on pace to win a second straight NBA title despite being the worst rebounding team statistically in the NBA this season.

I would trade the pick, the team is in rebuild mode and I am not sure Burke is the guy I really want on my team. Since my team needs a PG a PF and maybe a SG depending on how they feel about Afflalo still.

Right now, the most realistic is Asik. If Houston pursue D12, sign and trade JJ and a couple second round picks, maybe Joel Freeland or somebody for Asik.
