The only way we would be able to pry CB4 away from Toronto would be via a sign and trade, meaning he'd have to want to come and play for the Trail Blazers, which could be a stretch as he has said in the past he wants to play in a big market. It's weird. Every time we trade for a player, they fall in love with the city and either end of re-signing or finding a home in the area, but it seems like whenever we try to woo free agents, Portland doesn't seem to get much love as a city (see Turkoglu, Hedo)

I know it'd be tough working with Aldridge's contract since he just signed an extension, but doesn't his contract of 12 or so million start after July first, making it easier to do a sign and trade? Rudy, Joel, and LA for Bosh and contract filler?

Bosh isn't going to happen.... We are good with big men now, once eveyone is back. Imo, the weakness that needs to be addressed is the 2 off the bench,  guard defense, and three point shooting.  I asked Merlin last night, he said Blake will be back. I also heard Wheels mention my guy Raja Bell.  Another one I would like is Jamal Crawford.  Everyone else sounds like Charlie Browns teacher at this point.

I just don't see ATL moving Crawford after he won Sixth Man of the Year and does Raja Bell really play any better defense than Webster at his point in his career? I'll take my chances with Marty developing along with Batum into two of the top perimeter defenders in the game.

Clyde - The problem with adding Aldridge to that deal is that we can only use half of his contract to match the trade which means we would have to add several other high priced players to match Bosh's contract - 50% of Lamarcus's isn't going to come close. When you give up Aldridge in the first year of his extension, you only get credit for 50% of his contract in salary cap relief, but you have to add 100% of Bosh's contract to the payroll coming back, and since we're already over, it won't work. It's going to be that way until the second year of his extension, so he won't be moved 'til then. I think the reason it's in the CBA that way is so that teams don't just sign players to contracts that don't make sense only to make trades work.

Hey Clyde, I just went and checked his status. Trade Machine says his poison pill provision expires July 1, 2010, but the CBA says "For extended rookie scale contracts, the player's BYC begins on the July 1 preceding the first season of the extension.  For example, if an extension of a rookie scale contract is signed on 10/30/99, his BYC begins on 7/1/00, because the first season of the extension is 00-01." According to the CBA, since the first season of his extension is the 2010/2011 season, his BYC should START July 1, 2010.  At least that's how I read it, does that look right?

Yes Hawes,   Imo, Bell is a better defender at the 2 than Martell. I am looking at the back up 2 position only.  Rudys minutes. To me Martell is the back up 3 .  I know you could pencil in Martell and Jerryd at the 2, but most of the time, Martell defends 3 and Jerryd is on the ball.  Bell has that nasty that the Blazers need more of.  I know Crawford probably isnt possible, but he would be nice for a lot of reasons. Not to start up the Blake/ Miller debate again, but Blake is a better defender and outside shooter. As a back up he fits perfectly.  Makes more sense than bringing in another pg to butt heads with Nates system.

Man Jason, you are a salary cap guru! I was also under the impression it would be easier to trade players who signed extensions after July 1st. Still not easy to do but easier than before with the poison pill provision.

Nah, I'm a hack. I'm still trying to figure it out myself. I'm a little confused now because there is some conflicting info. There used to be a guy on here (actually the old site) named mrblazer a couple of years ago that could have helped us out, but it doesn't look like he's around any more.

I wonder which will be the first domino to fall this summer..Wade? Amare? JJ? LeBron? Bosh? I think once we see one go somewhere, the rest will fall in place as contingency plans start to take shape, especially in the case of the Knicks :D

Nate should just let Pendergrapgh play more. If Nate had a better idea on how to use big guys, we wouldn't be talking about grabbing a multi-purpose big guy like C. Bosh.

Bosh will be the first shoe to fall. Seems like it's all but an inevitability that he'll be leaving Toronto. Sign and trade to the Lakers for Bynum and change? Kind of an overlap of skills with Pau, but with that much talent, I think you could make it work. Tobyus, I like Pendergraph as much as the next guy, but he ain't no Bosh.

I think we can all agree we love Pendergraph's intensity and energy out on the floor, but he is still coming off of his rookie season and is green behind the ears. I'd like to see him either watch tape or Camby or work out with him this summer and learn the tricks of the trade to rebounding. He has the heart to go after every loose ball, now all he needs is veteran instincts to know where its coming off the rim, which is how Barkley was so successful rebounding. Also, and this probably just comes with experience, but I'd like to see him get more accustomed on the defensive end. I think he got a little lost out there at times, getting beat as he turned his head the wrong direction. Hopefully Summer League will show off improvements in his game.

The Raptors can do much better than a Bynum package. I think Houston may be the team to beat. They can offer  young prospects, expiring deals, and New Yorks draft picks. A Yao/Bosh front court would be lethal. Maybe for our own safety we should trade for him!

This discussion has come up the last two offseasons and I have to say, I still think Bosh is really overrated. I think everyone on that Toronto team is really over rated. He is simply the best player on a really bad team. Granted he still has to go against defenses that know he's the best player, and plan for him to be the best player, but that is because they have sort of built their team like a poor man's Suns with a lot of (should be) three point shooters to try and spread the floor and let the big dog eat. You saw him in the Olympics, he was sort of a minimal factor. Besides, I like having Pendergraph coming in behind Aldrige than giving up all we would need to in order to get Bosh. Jose Calderone was supposed to be really good, so was Bosh and Jamario Moon. Yet with those three supposedly really good players, they still were terrible and I don't think it is all coaching. If Bosh were in a different situation, I think we would see his true colors and not be so fascinated. The best place for Predator to play is in Toronto, Minnesota, New York, Miami or even with the Bobcats. I think many other places he would fizzle out.

I love Bosh's ability to face up and put the ball on the floor, something all elite power forwards have in their arsenals.

The same could have been said about Gasol before he went to LA and look how well Pau has turned  the Lakers around. Some players just aren't fit for carrying teams. I think Bosh would work well with Roy and the bottom line is Bosh>Aldridge. If you can upgrade, you do it.

Looks like Raja Bell wants to play for the Heat. Apparently he played college ball down in southern Florida. Miami has the cap room to take on multiple playes so, you never know.

Raja Bell, a former Florida International standout and respected perimeter defensive stopper, marked his spot among those who will be lobbying Riley this summer. Bell, whose best days came during his stint as Phoenix's supposed Kobe stopper a few years ago, has bounced around in recent seasons. He last was with Golden State after he was dealt by Charlotte last season.

"Miami is my first choice," said Bell, an unrestricted free agent who spent the latter part of the season attending several Heat games after he was released by the Warriors. "Pat (Riley), if you can use my services, give me a call. I'm right around the corner, 36th and Biscayne, give me a call."
