What To Do With Oden: Cut Our Losses Or Wait It Out?

No, this is not a Durant/Oden debate, but after 3 years in the league, Oden has only played the equivalent to one NBA season. While his PER is through the roof and his production when he can stay healthy and out of foul trouble rivals only a young Dwight Howard from the center position, he is due for an extension this summer or he is a restricted free agent in 2011. The question now becomes do we cut our losses and try to persuade another franchise to trade for him based on potential alone and get another piece for this team or do we stick with our investment and hope we get some good return?

Thinking back to past draft picks, Portland cut Sam Bowie loose and turned him into Buck Williams. While Buck didn't get us over the hump, he was an integral piece of one of the greatest 3 year runs in franchise history and took us from one and done in the playoffs to Finals nearly every year.

So, lets say we can get a player of Chris Bosh's caliber. Would you go after it and get something for him NOW or simply be patient and just hope and pray he can stay healthy? It's a very tough decision for me personally, since GO is my favorite Blazers, but ultimately I wouldn't be upset either way the organization decides.

I'm not surprised this has been up here since this morning and there haven't been any comments. This is a really tough question and I'm not sure there's a right answer until some day in the future when we all look back at it. My personal opinion (basically my gut) tells me we should be patient and see what happens when he comes back. I think that's what the Blazers will do. This guy is going to be an incredible Shaq like force in this league, and if he can stay healthy, will have the same type impact on this league that Durant is having. Bosh won't compare, and in addition to that... Greg is EXACTLY what we need if he can stay on the court. What he adds is what we're missing. With a healthy Greg Oden back starting next year, you could start Greg and Lamarcus and the 4 and 5 and have Canby getting all the backup minutes at both positions. Think about having a front court always with 2 of the 3 of Oden, Aldridge, and Canby. Foul trouble for any of them could easily be absorbed with so many quality bigs, not to mention that Nate would have the ability to completely lock down the paint, or go with a better scoring front court. Having that guy rebounding and blocking shots is going to help the offense as well as the defense, and our outside shooting will loosen up with Greg drawing doubles inside. We started to get a glimpse of what it will be like this year before the injury, and that was WITHOUT Canby. It would be a shame to miss out on an opportunity to have this lineup. It's going to be amazing... IF...

Very difficult question, I agree. Personally, I'd wait it out. Its not like this guy is Darko or Kwame Brown who has potential to be good, Greg is good, there's no doubt in that. And the fact of the matter is, the team was constructed around the big 3 of LA, Roy, and Oden as each compliment one another perfectly. The only thing worse than these injuries would be to trade him too soon and see him blossom for another franchise. I realize that with all business decisions you have to know when to hold them and when to fold them, but I'm not ready to give up on the big man yet. I'm not a gambling man, but whatever we get in return for Oden probably doesn't put us over the top but a healthy Greg Oden does. I roll the dice, pray to the Heavens, and hope for his sake as well as ours that he can just play ball without any more major setbacks. He is a force in this league rivaled only by Howard and Ming and when he gets going, as we have seen in the flashes last year, our team immediately turns into an elite squad. Also, figure in the fact that LeBron is this era's Jordan and seems to have a lock on at least 3-4 trophies...the only thing that could slow him down is an inside presence like that of Oden. We all saw how a team built around Howard took it from the Cavs, think of what we could do with Oden, Roy, and Aldridge.

    Why Trade Now?

We have learned to play without him, we have no idea if any of the injuries are related to any pacific malfuntion of Gregs body.

We keep him and play with what we have.

I have been pro- Oden for 3 years.  But I can only be so patient.  I'm doing the same thing I have been, wait and see what happens WHEN he plays, until then, it does nothing to talk about it anymore......

I'm wondering who, if anyone, will be the odd man out ( at center ) next season. Assuming  Marcus, Joel , and Greg are all healthy, someones PT will be drastically cut, or nonexistent. Any speculation ?

Joel, in my opinion, will be on the outside looking in. He won't be ready for training camp and his 2nd knee injury could be a devastating setback. Not to mention, he would be on the last year of his contract, making his attractive to potential buyers. Camby just signed an extension, doubt we move him or don't play him and too much has been invested in Oden and his potential is greater than the other two players combined.

+ Joel isn't a threat on offense and both of those other guys can play defense just as well if not better. Not to mention Canby can play the 4 too.

I for one, will never assume Oden will stay healthy or out of foul trouble , and the word " potential " is about on my last nerve with this team.   I don't see Howard coming back next season, unless it's as a coach. Until we know when Joel can play,it's way to soon to count him out.  We have mix and match bigs that can all play together.  Using Camby at the 4 gives the ability to keep either Joel and Greg in with Marcus and LA.  Then add Dante and Jeff when needed. It's a beautiful thing !

Don't forget the draft is a very deep center/power forward draft and we can always keep young talent flowing into the organization.
