TRAIL BLAZERS SIGN ANDRE MILLER PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Trail Blazers have signed free agent guard Andre Miller to a multi-year contract, it was announced today by General Manager Kevin Pritchard. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. "We are excited to add a player of the caliber and character of Andre Miller," said Pritchard. "He is one of the league's ironmen who brings a wealth of veteran leadership to our team and is a great fit for our young and improving roster." Miller (6-2, 205, Utah) holds career averages of 14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 1.38 steals in 815 games (768 starts) during his 10 NBA seasons with Cleveland, L.A. Clippers, Denver and Philadelphia. "I'm really excited for this opportunity with the Trail Blazers and look forward to working with my new team," said Miller. "I hope to provide veteran leadership to a young talented nucleus and help Portland take the next step in the pursuit of a championship." Originally selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the eighth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, Miller is tied for the 16th highest assists average (7.4) in NBA history and is currently fourth among active players. He has also played in 530 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NBA. Miller has missed just three games in his career. Miller, 33, has 174 career double-doubles and averaged one for Cleveland in 2001-02 (16.5 ppg, 10.9 apg) while leading the NBA in assists that season. During the 2008-09 season, Miller averaged 16.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.33 steals and shot 47.3 percent from the floor in 82 games (all starts). He ranked 14th in the NBA in assists, 15th in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.68) and tied for 15th in steals. Miller recorded 12 double-doubles last season, including two triple-doubles. Miller averaged 21.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.17 steals in the 2009 NBA Playoffs. He has career postseason averages of 17.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.30 steals in 27 games (all starts).

I think this is the greatest news for me.  Andre Miller was the ONE player I felt was the best PG available this summer in free agency.  He might not be an offensive threat himself, but what he does as far as opening up the floor and creating plays is something that is very rare in the NBA today.  He will relieve so much pressure off of Roy.  In effect, it will open Roy's offensive game up immensely.  I think we will see Roy's scoring average rise this year with Miller on the floor.  Not to say that Steve Blake not a great PG; I think he is a spectacular PG and will still get plenty of minutes to create himself and knock down threes, but all in all, it comes down to being smart on the offensive end and I think Miller is one of the smartest.  I can't wait to see how he will open up everyone else's game.

that's all great, but now what with our back up pg position? We could go two ways. As bayless develops we could put him and rudy as combo guards for the bench and let go of blake via trade. Or we could let go of Bayless.

Slap me with the first one.

I'm up for trading blake. At this point he's more than expendable.

Do you seriously believe Bayless is ready to step up and be the backup PG for this team? There's no way, he's not ready. People can say summer league doesn't matter, and he would have had more assists with better guys, but that has nothing to do with his turnovers. He just made bad decisions for most of the summer league. There were a few sparks of "wow that was sweet," but for the most part he played like a kid who just came out of college.

We can't afford to trade Blake yet. If after the season starts Bayless somehow starts showing us why we drafted him, then maybe, MAYBE Blake becomes expendable. Until then though, no way do we give up Blake.

Yea that's right about Blake in any case. Also though being that Bayless is just coming into his second year why not wait and see if Bayless can fulfill his seemingly high talent level and come into his own in the next year or two. I mean there are many examples of players that didn't necessarily show their high draft pick talent status at the early stages but caught on at some later time and blossomed to a good, great or tremendous career. First that comes to mind in this category is Chauncey Billups remember he wasn't always the team changing, championship contending pg that he is known as today he struggled for a few years as well although he was on a few subpar teams at the time but still. So basically I said all that to say why not cut Bayless some slack and let's wait to see what his work ethic and will to want to be better leads him, that usually means very good things for most players.......
I am a fan of the beautiful cohesiveness of my blazers, reminding me of why I've loved this franchise for much of my young life despite being a texan....

Andre Miller isn't the best move we could pull off. To be honest tampering with our roster is very very sketchy to begin with. We just have so much talent and cohesiveness it's easy to stand pat.

But it was sort of obvious we needed an improvement in the PG spot, and our other position area needing improvement would be the 3 spot back up. Maybe Martell or Batum  can fill it?

Bertram are you serious? We don't another SF, we have 3 of them in Batum, Webster, and Outlaw. And we have one sitting over in Spain in Claver. I still don't understand wtf they were doing going after jurkeyglue anyways, but we don't need another SF. We need a backup PF. But now that we have Cunningham and Pendergraph maybe we don't. I'm not sure either of them are ready to contribute on the NBA level quite yet, I guess we'll just have to see.

As for "tampering with our roster," did you honestly want Bayless to come in and play backup PG? I understand people say to not take too much out of summer league, but if they guy turns the ball over 7 times a game against crappy defenders and people who are trying to make the bottom of the NBA barrel, what's he gonna do when he plays against good players who play stifling defense? He's probably gonna turn it over more. I don't care about his assist numbers (he probably wouldve had a lot more if people could hit open shots), but the turnovers is a telling sign. It's like when you play ball with your kid. He's not gonna steal it from you, block you. force you into a horrible turnover. If Bayless IS SO GOOD, than why can he not navigate the floor against crap players?

And our cohesiveness, yeah right. We might have had a good locker room last year, but that doesn't mean they're a cohesive group. Just look at the comments from people this offseason. Bayless thought he was gonna challenge Blake for the starting role. LMA and ROY are still pissed about their extensions not being done, and who knows what Outlaw or Martell or Batum are thinking coming back to a team with 3 healthy SFs. We have team chemistry yes, but 4 players on our team were rookies. So it's not like this WHOLE group has grown together for years. This Miller signing is going to be a blessing, just wait and see.

If you watch the summer league games you can tell that bayless was kind of forcing the issue as a facilitator. That's not his game. He creates by cutting to the lane and doing something with the ball. Yes many of his opponents were "crap" players, and I'm not saying his uncomfortability should be an excuse for the carelessness with the ball, but cut the guy some slack.

Wouldn't you be jittery if your boss practically said publically that he wanted you to do something better, your progress would be tracked, while also being viewed and analyzed by the ENTIRE country?

I'm just saying lay off him a little.

You obviously didn't get what I was trying to say Richard. My back-up Sf i don't mean adding anyone to our roster. That's why the "Batum or Webster?" was inserted; one of them will be the starter the other the back-up.

Cohesiveness includes team chemistry on and off the court. Which as far as I know is not a problem. Challenging someone for their starting spot is a given on a team. Most everyone wants to start.

Only thing bad about our team is Vulcan and the whole contract negotiation with our two pillars.

Not a bad move but looking at our previous goals (Hedo, Millsap) I think this is not the sexy move. However he has a good chance to move us forward. Hopefully this won't lead to a drop in Blake's efficiency.

    im sooooo excited!!!!!!
i didnt care much for offense when it came  to him all i cared about was that assist number and him being on philidelphia, i believe the team with the most fast break points, makes him a fast pg and rudy needs that with sergio gone! it gives our team more energy when our starters are more of half court players and their slow with no energy the bench can speed it up with such a great leader!!
IM SOO EXCITED BLAZERS 09-10 BABY!!!!♥
I am a fan of my home town blazers! i love my team and im so proud to say THIS IS RIP CITY BABY!!
