So I am watching English League Soccor today and I hear the fans screaming and singing throughout the entire match. I have never really watched soccor (or football to those from outside the US). I have heard stories about the fans but have never really taken the time to get into it. With Portland getting an MLS team in two years I am trying to get started. I have heard about how crazy the Timbers Army is and it got me thinking. We pride ourselves in how passionate we are, but as fans we haven't even come close to matching that kind of intensity as fans. Now I'm not saying we should get blitzed and get into fights, but how intimidating do you think it would be for an opposing team to come into the RG and not only have 20.000 screaming Blazer fans, but have to compete against an organized Rip City with chants, songs, the kinds of things that are charming about soccor fans. Now I know some of you Rip City Citizens are also soldiers in the Timbers Army, but for those of us who aren't yet I think it would bring a whole new dimension to Rip City. We don't need the vulgarity and obcenities that are sometimes associated with soccor, but the charming songs and chants, why not? We already started it by doing "the wave" whenever we are up by 30. by having 15,000 people show up for a rally downtown, lets keep it going. Lets get orgaized as one Rip City. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to steal the soccor chants either. I think we need to come up with our own. It would keep things rolling throughout the game. If the Blazers are down, then we could have a rally cry. Something new to get them back into the game. How much of an advantage would that be? Right now we are one of the toughest arenas to play in. Lets make us THE TOUGHEST ARENA BY FAR! Remember, we want to encourage families to participate so any chant suggestions need to be appropriate and should also be non specific to a certain team or player so that we could use them at EVERY home game. What do you guys think? I think it would bring a whole new level to Blazer Basketball.

i think to make up for chanting "these refs suck" the crowd should chant the name of the lead official before the game starts to get him on our side

not quite what I had in mind. He might take that as a threat, more like an angry mob than a cheer. You know how at UofO they hold up the OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO as their kind of rally cry. You can find these things everywhere except professional Basketball. I think we need to bring it to the RG.

lol about the refs. idk what it is. but even in nba 2k9 it feels like the calls favor the away team more than the blazers. lol. im not even kidding.

as for the chants. i follow soccer (played it throughout my entire life) but the hardest thing about their chants is that its basically all tradition. those chants have been going for like forever. and everyone is so into it that no one feels stupid for shouting the same phrase over and over in unison.

now im not saying portland isnt capable of being that tightly knit. (honestly i think it might be the ONLY place capable) but as far as what is said during the chant isnt important. its just getting everyone on one page and in agreement.

it could be anything, something even as simple as...

    "RIP CITY BRINGS THE NOISE!!!"

or something more elaborate. but you just gotta get EVERYONE on the same page. then no matter what it is. its perfect.

I agree that Portland is probably the ONLY place that could get it to work. Which is why it is so awesome that we have this medium to organize our selves. I think just a "RIP CI-TY, RIP CI-TY, RIP CI-TY" would be an awesome start! When Phil Jackson is in town we could sing "It's raining, it's pouring, the Lakers are boring. They're mesomorised and mistified and none of them are scoring." but that isn't a general one.

Well, it has been published on this site as of today so that is an official documentation with a date that shows it was my idea. So in court that would atleast void me of any liability in using it in the future. I am going to start a group for Blazer chanters. Lets get this ball rolling, I think it would send chills through opposing teams if we were able to keep it going through a whole game every game.

With Game 5 scheduled already I think it only makes this more relevant. I want to keep this idea on the forefront of people's minds. I know that there is an initial reluctance to being loud and people do things in a group they wouldn't normally do on their own. I want to see how many people care enough about making this year something of legend. I would love to see this take off in Rip City and become tradition here. See how creative we could be. Lets start something special happen here in Rip City. Join Blazer Chanters and lets get this show to the RG!

Anyone who was at the rally, or wanted to be at the rally, should want to be part of this project. If we could get 20,000 plus fans in unison at the top of their lungs, could you imagine how deafenning that would be? Could you believe how much energy that would bring? You always hear that visiting NBA players feed off of silencing the crowds. Can you imagine how frustrated they would get if no matter what, they couldn't shut us up? We need more than just "de-fense" and making noise. Blazer Maniacs, Rip City Revivers and friends come join the Blazer Chanters group so we can make this dream a reality!

Since you are in Houston, one side could say 'Houston We Have A Problem...' Flip it over, the other side says 'His Name is Brandon Roy,' or 'I'm the Sixth Man Tonight. Go Blazers!'

I was bringing my daughter home from Soccor practice today and I was listening to the opening lineups. Seriously people? It sounded like the stadium was half full! For a possible elimination game, that is the best you could do at the beginning? Now to your credit it got better as the game went along, especially when the Blazers would go on their streaks. I don't know if it was nervous energy or what, but evertime Houston would get within 7 the crowd would go quiet again until Houston either missed a basket, or Portland scored. That helped Houston get that late 4 point lead. As fans, we have the responsibility to provide energy when it is hard to come by and intimidate the other team by rocking the arena. Now I did watch the rest of the game, but I have heard broadcasts where Wheels has to litterally yell to be heard on the radio and it certainly wasn't that. We were louder at the Laker game and in a Playoff game we should be just as loud. This is exactly why we need to get organized. People, come join Blazer Chanters, let's get these ready for Game 7! Right now we have 20 people. We are going to need a heck of a lot more than that if we want to dismantle the Rockets and ship them back to Houston and end their playoffs in the first round again.

I agree, the Garden did seem a lot more quiet than game 2. It did pick up in the 2nd half though

Yeah we were kinda quite, at least more than usual I think. Alot of people were really watching hard from what I saw. Like they were on the edge of there seat waiting to see what would happen. So many factors for the fans to think about...

"Can our young Blazers get it done when it's win or go home?" "Was Nate's demand for Consistancy in the officials heard?" "Will Yao eat one of our smaller players?" "If we win can we survive Game 6 in Houston?"

It looked like there was a lot of thinking going on. But once we really believed we were going to win, we went back to Rip City, for sure.

I love the Blazers and I think our fans our great, but I am also a Man City FC fan. The overseas football (soccer) fans really do live and die by their teams. In England, it doesn't matter if your team is in the Championship League or Premier League, you feel part of an army. In PDX, I know people who just follow the Blazers casually, not with any real passion. You never find that with soccer fans!!!

    GO BLAZERS!!!

    GO MAN CITY!!!

So you can see where it would be beneficial for Portland Fans to jump in like that. We have it here with the Timbers Army, we need to translate that over to Rip City!
