Postgame Notes And Quotes: Grizzlies Bite Again

Tuesday, March 12, 2013    Final Score:   Memphis 102, Portland 97

“Memphis is a good team. They’re physical, they play great team defense, they play individual defense. It was a struggle to score all night. I thought we had some good efforts, but they’re the fourth seed in the West right now. They’re a good team, playoff tested, and our team can learn from physical nature of the way they play, how they defense. It’s certainly disappointing to lose, but I thought we gave a good effort. We didn’t shoot the ball well. Part of that was us, part of that was their good defense.”

    On Batum’s decreased scoring:
“We need him to be aggressive, we need him to shoot the ball with confidence, we need him to be aggressive going to the basket. We need him to be able to drive and run. For whatever reason, it’s not there right now.”

    On “flat” feel to game:
“Memphis plays a grind-it game. It’s not an uptempo highlight game. They grind it out at both ends. It’s hard to have one of those games where you can really get the crowd into it. They defend. It’s hard to get a lot of momentum. The crowd gets into it most of the time with offense – a lot of times with defense – but they were effective at both ends.”

How did Leonard look on ankle?
“He moved well. He missed some shots that I was glad he took. He got a dunk. To be honest, I didn’t even notice the ankle. I thought he was moving pretty well.”

On playoff picture with 3-game home stretch:
“Whatever happens with the playoffs will happen, but, cliché, but we’re taking it each game. You want to win the ones at home. We played Memphis three times and played them tough but only came up with the first one. Randolph makes a big difference. We’ve got New York on Thursday. Right now, that’s our concern.”

    On playoff situation:
“What are we four games out? 19 games left? Of course we’re still in it. But I don’t want to be saying the same thing to you at game four or five and we’re not in it. I’d rather just lock in now and give ourselves a better chance to get into the playoffs.”

    On playing against Memphis’s defense:
“They play great team defense. It’s not one single guy that’s out there running around – besides Tony Allen. They play great team defense and they definitely understand their identity and go out and execute their game plan.”
“We could have done a better job of setting screens and executing what we do to make it a little easier on us offensively, but you have to give them credit where credit was due. They definitely clog the paint up and they’re a low possession team so when they go up five, six points, it’s tough to get those five or six points back because they grind games out.”

“It was a big game for us. We needed to win and take care of home court and we didn’t. Like I say after every game we lose, it makes everything harder now.”

    On Conley’s game:
“He did what he does almost every game. He’s great at anticipating passes, being in passing lanes, moves the ball really well and gets everybody involved. He shot a lot of free throws and scored some points.”

    On playing against Memphis’s defense
“It’s not hard to set up plays or get into them,  they just make it hard to get good looks. They’re consistent with making it tough trying to get good shots. They run guys off the three point line. When they do give up threes, they contest every one. They play really physical. They’re really good at what they do.”

“It’s tough. It’s a tough one. We played a good team pretty close. This year we had a lot of losses by five or less. That’s a really tough one.”

    On Memphis:
“That’s one of the best defensive teams in the league. They played great defense and did a good job tonight again.”
