Trail Blazers Honor Volunteers at 11th Annual Heart of the Community Awards

Volunteers don’t give back for recognition, they do it because giving back warms their souls.
It’s for this reason the Portland Trail Blazers and Hands On Greater Portland partner each year to present the Heart of the Community Awards. Started in 2002, the awards aim to give a deserving nod to those volunteers who carry the banner of volunteerism deep into the Portland community.
On Tuesday afternoon at The Governor Hotel, an inspirational awards ceremony was held to honor the recipients of the 11th annual Heart of The Community Awards. An event that continually leaves its attendees ready to lead others forward into giving back.
“Each year I leave this event thinking how can we out-do ourselves next year,” Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said. “It’s never really difficult to identify additional heroes year in and year out to honor. This event is about honoring community heroes. It’s also about inspiring others to lead by example.”
The honored volunteers spend countless hours organizing projects, recruiting other volunteers and helping make it better for the Portland community while leading others to do the same. Recognizing them for their efforts honors their services and encourages others to follow in their footsteps.
“There’s so much work to be done and yet you all show up every day with boundless energy and passion to create change,” Miller said as he addressed the luncheon attendees. “Thank you for all the work that you do.”
The awards include recognition for companies who focus on encouraging their employees to donate time, individual awards, an award for outstanding youth volunteerism and finally the Heart of the Community Award.
This years award recipients include:
Corporate Volunteer Award: Oregon Health & Science University
Hands On Greater Portland Volunteer Award: Terry Clelen
