Truth Be Told: Forbes' Numbers

On Wednesday, Forbes released its annual list ranking NBA teams in terms of their core values. The results of the study were positive for the Trail Blazers. We need to recognize, though, that the information provided by Forbes was not substantiated by the NBA or its teams.

But regardless of whether the results are substantiated or not, the study still paints a strong picture of our team's present standing and future prospects. Much of the credit should go to Paul Allen for putting the franchise in this position.

Since the article was published, speculation has occurred regarding Portland's willingness to make major investments in the team and its future.

Truth Be Told, Forbes' numbers are from more than a year ago. Since the time those numbers were collected, the team has made several major investments. The team resigned Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge, and signed Marcus Camby and Wesley Matthews, ranking the Trail Blazers among the NBA's top 10 in current investments. This is a definitive indication that the franchise is as committed as ever to position the team for success now and in the future.

"Our commitment to do whatever it takes to build a championship team has not wavered," said Trail Blazers President Larry Miller. "But we're going to do it the right way – with a balance of character and talent."

  1. So if the Knicks got #1, did Forbes deduct the harrasment suit filed against Isiah Thomas? Or does that not apply to standard team financing?

  2. i think there is a lot of merit in the report; at least as of a year ago. while it hasn't been substantiated by the nba or the teams, Forbes is pretty well regarded for its accuracy.

  3. "more than a year ago"? The data should reflect the salary cap year for 2009-10, which concluded on June 30, 2010.

    You're correct, though, that the team has more than re-invested in player salary with the extensions/contracts you mention. The evaluation now is whether or not that money was spent wisely.

  4. Mark Cuban, whose team was listed as the sixth-most valuable by Forbes, had even harsher words for the Forbes evaluation:

    “It’s worthless, it’s meaningless and worthless. You can quote me on that.’’
