After Reevaluation, Roy Tentatively Sets Return For Thursday

After the season the Trail Blazers have endured, it should come as no surprise that Brandon Roy’s hamstring pull, an injury that has kept him out of eight of the last nine games, continues to pester Portland’s best player. After being reevaluated yesterday by team trainers, Roy said prior to Monday night’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats that his target date for return is Thursday night’s game against the San Antonio Spurs.

“I think our target day is hopefully Thursday, but again, we don’t want to get expectations up,” said Roy. “Things have been going better. I’ve been on the court but there’s still some feeling there of the hamstring, so… They don’t want me back out there until I don’t feel it and I don’t think about it.”

After an evaluation with team trainer Jay Jensen on Sunday, Roy said he could still feel his hamstring tighten up, especially when trying to participate in sprints.

“If I go full speed it tightens up,” said Roy. “I just feels like it’s going to pull. It’s hard to go full speed really. I can go about 60, 70 percent. I was working out, doing some moving things and it felt fine, but the minute I started doing sprints it was like, all right, the trainer backed me off because I started feeling it again.

“I start off slow. I go in I do treatment, I do the pool, then I go do stuff on the court. A few movements with the ball it would get kind of sore but nothing where I felt like I had to stop. And then we would do sprints at the end. And that’s when I did about three of them and I was like ‘Ahhh, I don’t want to pull this thing again. We came too far so lets back off.’ And (team trainer Jay Jensen) said ‘Yeah, whenever you feel it let’s just stop.’”

Speaking with a twinge of resigned frustration in his voice, Roy noted that hamstring injuries are usually tricky, and that patience would be the key to getting back on the court as soon as possible.

“Everybody keeps saying that you have to be careful of (hamstring injures), they’ll linger,” said Roy. “And I just kept thinking that I can do it. It has been very frustrating that it’s not getting better as quick as I would like but I guess it’s part of it. It’s been frustrating. I didn’t imagine that, being Monday, that I would still be feeling it as much as I am. Frustrating, but I’ve got to keep being patient and hope to get back out there soon.”

There’s never a good time to lose any player, let alone your best, but the stretch of games leading up to the All-Star break are particularly hard to be without Roy given that the five games before the break are all against Western Conference teams in the thick of the playoff race.

When asked if the injury will keep him from playing in his third-consecutive All-Star game, Roy noted that he wasn’t thinking that far ahead.

“That’s still two weeks away and my focus is each game,” said Roy. “Over the weekend I was like ‘Maybe I can play Monday.’ I’m just trying to target each game, but it’s frustrating. Every day I’m just like ‘Man, I wish I could be back out there.’ Hamstrings, I guess, are one of those things where you have to be patient with it because again, I was running those sprints and I had to stop because I felt like I was going to pull it again.”

  2. I really hope he's back soon, but I'd prefer not to see him play in the meaningless all-star game. Karl will play him too much just to tire Brandon out..
