June 10 Podcast

By caseyholdahl Posted in: 2010draft
With all of the unknowns swirling around the Trail Blazers, Dave Deckard, he of, and I, Casey Holdahl of, try to focus on the things we do know.

We know that, with Monty Williams taking over as head coach in New Orleans, that the Blazers will need to hire at least one new assistant, and possibly more. So we delve into what that may say about the direction of the team. We discuss Portland's seemingly ongoing point guard conundrum, as discussed at length in Dave's mailbag. I talk a little bit about the Eurocamp in Treviso, which leads to a broader discussion of the pitfalls of drafting European players for both the players and the franchises drafting them. And we finish up by touch on the upcoming draft workouts scheduled to take place next week at the practice facility. A solid podcast, if you ask me. And I think I reduced the number of "ums" by at least half. Progress!

  1. Not a bad podcast. I'd give you guys an overall good grade after I deducted points for not discussing all the GM crap that is going on. I know why it wasn't discussed, so I'm cool with it.

I'm excited for Coach Williams and the assisting coaching search will be an interesting subject to over-analyze this summer.

As for the draft, I want a guy who's going to bring his A game and look outside the box. I don't much care about the draft after that.

  2. What about Darren Collison?? He can hit the three, defend, and he runs the offense well. Seems like they may deal him with the fact that they have CP3.

  3. Thanks for the understanding Tom. There's nothing new to discuss anyway.

Dflight, Darren Collison is nice, but I doubt the Hornets are going to move him anytime soon for anything you'd probably be willing to give up.

  4. Casey you really should try and cut back on the rambling. I enjoyed the show however it seemed your guest was perfectly capable of addressing your questions the first time you ask. We could do without the rephrasing and reiterating of almost everything you say. Just spit it out and let your guest talk.

  6. How the heck can you and Dave discuss the future of the PG position without discussing Bayless? Crazy.

Here is the comment I left over at BE:

Dave and Casey discuss PGs for fifteen minutes and never discuss the lottery pick PG on our roster? WTF?

How can you discuss the future of the position without discussing Bayless?

Dave seems to assume a priori that you need a traditional PG who primarily spends their time setting up other guys on the roster. That is a set of assumptions that needs to be discussed.

Casey discusses Roy as PG, and both he and Dave discuss how Roy can’t defend the point, but neither take the next step and discuss the possibility of Roy and Bayless sharing distribution responsibilities while Bayless defends the point.

Casey even talks about the new handcheck rule and the movement towards PG who can penetrate and then fails to even mention that we have one of the best young penetrators in the league.

Having this discussion without mentioning the guy who answers most of the questions brought up in the discussion is completely inexplicable.
