Charania: Blazers Sign Richard Howell

By caseyholdahl

The Trail Blazers continue to fill out their training camp roster, with Shams Charnania of RealGM reporting the team has signed North Carolina State forward Richard Howell.
Former North Carolina State standout Richard Howell has agreed to sign a partially guaranteed contract with the Portland Trail Blazers, his agent Joel Bell told RealGM.

Howell had been bought out from his French team and flew to the States to sign his new deal on Friday. Despite having 15 players under guaranteed deals, the Blazers are intrigued by Howell, the 6-foot-8 forward who averaged 12.7 points and 10.9 rebounds in his senior season at N.C. State.
Howell's former team, BCM Gravelines Dunkerque of the French ProA league, confirms that Howell has left the team in this Google translated release.

Howell was on the Denver Nuggets 2013 Las Vegas Summer League roster, playing in three games and averaging 1.7 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 10.7 minutes. He played three seasons at North Carolina State, averaging 12.7 points 10.9 rebounds during his senior season and had a fan club devoted to his beard, which makes him a great fit in Portland

The report comes on the heels of recent signings of forward E.J. Singler and guard Dee Bost. The Trail Blazers already have 15 players, the regular season roster maximum, under guaranteed contracts for the 2013-14 season, so the assumption is that all three players will end up on Portland's D-League team, the Idaho Stampede, after training camp.

UPDATE: Howell confirmed the moves via Twitter (hat tip to Blazersedge):
The whole "beardgang" thing can't hurt his chances of making the roster, at least not in this town.

UPDATE: It's now official. From the team's press release:
The Portland Trail Blazers have signed rookie forward Richard Howell, it was announced today by General Manager Neil Olshey.

Howell, 22, averaged 12.7 points (51.8% FG, 63.3% FT), 10.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 31.6 minutes his senior 2012-13 season at North Carolina State. A First Team All-ACC selection last season, Howell ranks fifth all-time in school history with 1,055 rebounds.

He appeared in three games for the Denver Nuggets 2013 NBA Summer League entry in Las Vegas, averaging 1.7 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.30 blocked shots and 10.7 minutes.

With the addition of Howell (6-8, 257), the Trail Blazers roster stands at 19 players.

  1. I like putting players in the D league compared to overseas, as it is much easier to move them up incase of season ending injuries in which Portland is famous for.

  3. And if he's picked up a little Francais, he'll be an asset in training camp. ;-)

  4. I have a crazy feeling that AT LEAST 1 (either Bost or the Bearded 1) but maybe even 2 of the 3 newest guys (don't c Singler making it) will b w/ us @ either the beginning or very close to the beginning of the season while @ least 1 (MOST likely Crabbe & maybe Cj) of the rookies will have quite the stint in the D-League (IF Cj goes, he won't b there as long as Crabbe for sure & it's possible Cj might go later on in the season too). Going/being in the D-League, these days (aka the exclusive affiliation now), I think more than ever shouldn't b seen as a demotion; I VERY much c it as necessary practice/run for the guys that r further down the bench to help them learn/get comfortable w/ OUR system so that they CAN contribute when called upon :)

  5. I agree mostly Simpson; I don't know if they will trade D league players or just put the two inactive players in the D league for short stints. It is far better to play and get hands on experience game wise then to sit on the bench night after night.

I am not sure who the top ten players are, so cannot comment on who is D and who is not.

my question is since we only have until Oct 1 to guarantee contracts, can the Blazers bring up D league players while sending down players with guaranteed contract to the D League?
